  • Hubert Laws is definitely the best jazz flautist ever, first time I've ever heard of him was through Bob James's "Touch Down" album!

  • @Gxyz222 Hubert is more Jazz than his Brother Ronnie Laws even though i do like his Pressure Sensitive lp

  • Hm...do I put my trombone down or do I quit school and job to practice???? This what I think everytime I watch this vid. And Benson makes me hate every other floutist I've ever heard, save Bohnet from Mythril. lol

  • Definitely should be added to the favorites

  • Great, classic stuff and great players one and all!

My all time favourite Chick Corea composition.

  • Bill Watrous - my first time with Him:) So pure tone - excellent, gotta check him out

  • @8art He has changed so much over the years. Make sure to check out his current stuff now, as well as his stuff from the Manhattan Wildlife Refuge years. Both are excellent.

  • It looks like the trombone player is wearing Uggs.

  • check out the stage presence of watrous..& his embouchre ....

  • I'd forgotten about Bill Watrous, caught the Space Available post early this evening and have been watching Watrous vids all night. Man he makes it look easy. Youtube is a musician's dream come true.

    Thanks for the post.

    chw

  • Wow, pre-nose job Benson... Priceless...

  • @Carehuea U kidding right???

  • @Carehuea Yeah, he looks like Janet Jackson`s uncle now

  • great, thx very much for posting! saturday morning music for sure back in the 70's. great way to start the day! then of course end the day with some Miles from Bitches Brew or other.

  • Spain alla Samba!!!!!!!!

  • Aaaaaaaaah!

  • Is that ?est Love's dad on set?

  • Is it just me, or Stanley Clarke was using a small double bass, or the double bass just looked small beside him?

  • Classic.

  • Wow , what talent assembled here !!!!!!!

  • Love the gum chewing...What a magical performance...A feast!

  • Hubert Laws is a badass!!

  • Bill makes it look so effortless it almost looks like a guy who is faking playing the trombone. His chops look the same whether he is playing a high F of one in the staff.

  • WOW! Even back then Bill Watrous still had the "Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Man" haircut!

  • On the same note. Bill Watrous and Anton Chigurh even dress the same (the jean jacket)!

  • The rhythm section is about to tear my head off! ...bless you for posting!

  • bello emozionante

  • Dream team

  • the reward for playing jazz is jazz...this is not a competition, but I see your point that todays "smooth jazz" is soul less and vapid compared to this

  • all of 'em tour taht shit up! uh son!

  • I'd forgotten how insane George Benson was in his prime. It was nothing to him also, he simply thought it, and it came out the end of the horn as perfect as a newborn. A-frickin-mazing.

  • Horn? I though George Benson was the one playing mouth harp...:)

  • D'OH! Lol, I was typing that just as George started playing, so my brain said "Bill" and my hands wrote "George".

  • CTI Benson... Yeah Baby

  • Nice rifts in those days on CTI.

  • stellar cast!

  • Incredible!!!!! A set of masterminds coming together in one band. Stanley Clarke is still one of the coldest upright players to ever lays hands on the instrument. Fucking amazing performance. Everybody was awesome.

  • All these awesome musicians at once! This is great! George Benson still tears up the house with those mad guitar skills!

  • What a great performance! Miss those CTI recordings!!

  • Love it when Chick (lipcurl) rips into the moog. I got a DVD of this a few years back. Watched it 20 or so times. Stellar line-up. At the end of my DVD it started to go into the 1976 awards show. I was devastated when it faded to black minutes later. Anybody got it?

  • Holy Crap. I have the horn Bill plays (Bach 16-M) but mine must defective, it doesn't play as high and fast and clean as his does. Allways blame the equipment.

  • hehehe Benson BEFORE the nose job some real heavyweights in there

  • Of course King Hubert is amazing.... however, my heart stays with the original Joe Farrell flute solo, only b/c he wrote that classic solo...a must for all jazzers... and I agree Airto ruled also... So, far it's been 30 friggin years, and no one has come close to these guys!

  • Fuggin' AWESOME. Every single player there.

  • Fuck Bill Watrous kills!

  • bellissima esecuzione. supersession

lenny White on drums is good but the version with airto moreira on drums is very best. airto accented fill drums.

  • Loved this ,not too many D`Angelico`s(George Benson)seemingly used.I think Ron Anthohy(Sinatra`s last touring guitarist)played one Great feel.

  • Awesome version!

We need to start an advocacy group.... "People for the prevalence of Spain".... Ban all other charts and all bands in all genre must only play Spain and variations on the theme :-D

  • lol

  • Haha yes!

  • Fusion was GOOD for jazz. That made them be able to do this event. Has there been any solidified interest in jazz in 25 or so years. NO! Wynton has not made the music more popular in any way. But Chick, Stanley, Hubert laws, Wayne Shorter, George Benson all brought people into the music and helped them understand the true spirit of the music. It's adventure, power and variety...

  • Well said.

  • Fusion saved jazz. Wynton, and other conservative jazz artists have killed it. In my honest opinion, Wynton has some seriously perverted views on what jazz "should be." If you think jazz "should be" something, at all, then you have no idea what you're talking about.

  • ur so right!

  • I wouldn't say wynton killed jazz. Thats a little harsh. Too fucking harsh. I would more on the likes say what many of these so called jazz players are doing these days is hurting jazz today a lot. Plus if you think someone is doing something that's killing off jazz then maybe you should speak out. I have followed wynton since I was like 13. I'm 24 now and he is still one of the best ever and alive. Wha gets me is why you say wynton, and why not chris botti?

  • Comment removed

  • @cccc109 The problem is that Wynton views any developments post 1970 as being completely musically worthless. While there's stuff I don't enjoy listening to in jazz, I don't call it a "musical wasteland," I just don't play it often. The implicit diss here is that Wynton has called some of people's favorite artists from the past 40 years hacks with no value and they don't like that too much.

  • i'm countin' em... lenny, stanley, chick, alright this is return to forever right? :)

watrous (awesome), benson (the real one)and laws (my idol on flute)add something magical. i mean this is an extreme dream team! thank you sooo much for this marvellous post, didn't even dream of seeing such a thing. you see, i was born in 1978... damnnn. a bientot pour d'auters post comme celui-ci j'espère! peace from paris

  • you should check out 4th floor walk up on the album...his wild life refuge band kicks ass with Danny Stiles on trumpet/flug horn. It is a must hear for any and all bone players...

  • wow, top notch players each and every one. watrous just destroys it!

  • Now's not the place man..

  • Great great post - what a band! I'm no "bone" player but that has to be about the best trombone solo I've ever heard. Benson does fine job, too, interesting how he always gets his trademark tone regardless of what guitar, whether playing on that gorgeous vintage D'Angelico here or his later plywood Ibanez GB models.

  • You should try to get a hold of Watrous' recording of Spain with his band. I think on the album of the same name. Totally unreal... one of my favorite recordings, ever.

And, I agree... great, great post.

  • @MayadaJeffery

Manhattan Wildlife Refuge is his album with Spain as the first track.

  • @slipbone thanks!

  • @MayadaJeffery

Manhattan Wildlife Refuge is his album with Spain as the first track.

  • Incredible!!!!!!!

  • And I thought Bill's hair looked strange now!

  • Hubert plays so relaxed. His hands are amazing, and his sound is great - a great student of Julius Baker.

Don't forget that this is no random "Down Beat" jam session. Chick was in Hubert's band and plays on Hubert's first record as a leader, "Laws of Jazz." Armando Corea he was.

  • yep....amazing fingers to the keys.....beautiful techinique :)

  • From WTTW's Soundstage, live in Chicago!

  • Is this from the same show that featured Freddie Hubbard doing Straight Life?

  • yep

  • man what a concert

  • chick corea en sus buenos tiempos.. XD como en el trombone bill...... maestros

  • Really Great!!!

  • man, i wish they had a vid of him playing this with manhattan wildlife refuge

  • damn

    what a lineup

  • is chick chewing gum?

  • he always seems to be

  • Like he always does.

  • Hubert 10/10 u moroniousness

  • I can do that jazz trombone blind-folded with both hands tied behind my back... Just kidding, not really, you know how it is..

  • AND SKYWALKER ON TROMBONE!

    Sorry, couldn't help it ^^.

Anyways, even though I like the original better, this was still very good.

Stanley Clark is such a beast.

  • jajajajajajaja LOL

  • Whoa!! Chick had an afro?!

  • chick has had almost every hairdo known to man

  • Oh man,

    this is just amazing,

it's like the ultimate jazz band.

  • McAwesome4567 I agree, cant wait till this august. Return to Forever!

  • omgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomg!!!

  • I saw this program my first('75 or'76)year in college and the intensity grew with each tune. A surprise was George could hang on 'Spain", but he was the best on the planet! I lived in Pittsburgh where he is from, a friend of mine gave me a cd of his 'It's Uptown' from 1966 and he was killin' back then!

  • the funk overtook Stanley @ 7:07

  • Freakin' amazing !!!

    God's of Jazz!

I didn't know the trombone man, what a musician!

    In my opinion:

    Flute Solo (Hubert Laws): 8.5/10

    Trombone Solo (Bill Watrous): 9.5/10

Guitar Solo (George Benson) : 9.0/10

Keys Solo (Chick Corea) : 10/10

Stanley Clarke looks like 70's! (1975 yeah I know :P)

Very original way to hear "Spain" played like samba!

  • This is amazing. Great combination of great musicians!

  • Great cut! This became one of my favorite jazz songs when my son's jazz band used to play it.

It's kind of funny to see Bill Watrous's slide oil stuck in the inside of the concert grand, eh?

  • Bill Watrous es mi idolo lo maximo"

  • I love how they just make it look so effortless. True craftsmen.

  • Bill Watrous is wailing!!! I love this song!! check out The Inner court playing spain, I recorded them. They dedicated the song to my friends and I.

  • ¡Qué temazo! Thanks for posting. I love this song in all its rempditions, few compositions are so inspirating I think. And now I just know two "new" (to me) fabulous musicians, Hubert Laws and Bill Watrous, thanks

  • Jeez man, ive not heard much of George Benson, but ive never heard him shred like that! What an amazing group. Chick Corea always has the best musicians with him!

  • Wich guitar is benson using?

  • It's a 1957 D'Angelico Excel

  • I absolutely LOVE Chick Corea, but sometimes I just can't believe how funny-looking he is.

  • I love Hubert Laws.

  • Biil Watrous GREAT

  • benson looks like carl weathers.

    this performance is awesome.

  • Some people listen to stations like the Wave and think they are listening to jazz, well they really need to check out his clip so they can see the roots of smooth jazz

  • Benson's solo (L)!

  • Great Video. Please put more if you have.

  • guitar is George Benson.

  • chill willjohnsonmusic............ do simply said idiot.......... maybe he forget bout theory.......... hehhehhee... but chick corea....... nice show....... lallalaa

  • wow! so many incredible musicians in one place!

  • Bass player needs to tune up...

  • That would be Stanley Clarke...Are you quite sure?

  • dam that flute player can honestly play so fukn well

  • Fantastic post- wish this sort of thing could happen today! Watrous, Laws, Benson, White, Stanley C and the great Chick the pride of Chelsea,MA!!!!

  • man haha watrous taking it up an octave damn.

  • Benson cranks it up for his 'Lydian #5' licks on the second to last chord !!

  • I wonder if that was to make up for not playing the unison line or just plain ol' "That'll learn 'em"!

  • "IDIOT......" ?? Thats a bit unnecessarily harsh isn't it ?? It's a real shame you feel the need to be so aggressive. It is only supposed to be a sharing of light hearted friendly banter / observations between members of this community.

  • To clarify :-

i meant the Lydian scale with it's 5th degree 'raised'. Or Lydian Augmented, or (as i said) Lydian sharp five (#5). (ie. 3rd mode of the melodic minor.)

  • ahhh. I am sorry in that case

    my apologies.

    =/

  • Sure man, no worries ;-)

  • Lolololol

  • This is the only version i have heard of 'Spain' where they omit the interludes between solos. i assume this was due to air time restrictions. I dont mind admitting it got me first time round as i thought the trombone (Bob) had come in early. Its always nice to get caught out now and again !!

  • Oh man, Chick is in fine form here !! We are also treated to half a chorus on Mini Moog !! Who could ask for more ???

  • superb

  • Chops everywhere.

  • Thanks for another great clip, Dave. Fantastic performances by Bill Watrous, Hubert Laws, and a Chic from Korea.

  • Our marching band is playing this, this year and I have the trombone solo. This is an awesome song especially with my band teacher's idol on trombone.

  • Laws has always been one of my favorite flutists. As a high school student I listened to his recordings ALL THE TIME!

  • WOW!! Awesome..really!! Watrous, Corea..Clarke!! Watrous is awesome obviously, and Clarke is my fave bass player ever! Great! Cheers for showing this!!

  • Great clip, great band! Watrous was just untouchable in his prime.

  • i bow

  • Great, Bill Watrous on trombone. He did the John Labarbera arrangement at College of San Mateo in 1976. I recorded it.

  • Amazing line up, amazing version!! Nice to see Hubert Laws dancing to this music.

  • fantastic !!!

  • Stellar performance (with stellar performers) of an awesome song! This band was incredible! Thanks for this great video!

  • Man, this is so great! Thanks for posting it and if there's a DVD available that you know of (not likely) let us know!

  • Man I wish those lost kids wearing their jeans around their ankles could dig this and aspire to such greatness.

  • Wow, I very much enjoyed that!

  • I think Hubert Laws' finger positon on the flute is ideal for most flute players.

  • You actually think thats Jimi Hendrix on bass? Its Stanley Clarke from Return To Forever. Jimi Hendrix died five years before this.

  • what about lenny & stanley's solos?

    great version

  • definitely jimi hendrix on bass

  • bill watrous.... increible, virtuosismo tecnico... que toque de lengua tan increible... unico...

  • Thank you so much for putting this on you tube! That looks like an original D'Angelico New Yorker, that Benson's playing.

  • Thank you so much for this vid - what a great line up of some of the most talented people in the world.

  • Hubert! It's so cool to hear great jazz flute. There are too many lameass diatonic jazz flautists. Hubert and James Newton changed all that!

  • OH MY FUCKIN GOD

    WHAT A LINE-UP

    (O_O)

    ziontifik dot com
