Having raised them for 15 years, The name "Bird Eaters" is a term used in pet stores to try and sell them. Feeding them mice and birds are extremely dangerous and even fatal to them with the wet molts from excess calcium in their exoskeleton. You would never feed a newborn tarantula (1/2'') a bird or a mouse.

This is a bad idea. That baby bird, albeit a baby is far too much calcium for your smithi and could seriously injure your smithi. If you really want to feed it something like that do a mouse, at least it's less likely to kill your pet.

so can a mouse and they have are just as unhealthy to your pet tarantula if fed too much. They are equally enriched with calcium (too much of it causes the exoskelton to become rock hard, Result: cannot molt correctly, and often die) with nails and sharp teeth to wound your tarantula. If you want something that does the job of mice and gets the fat abdomen, a combination of superworms and roaches will do the job and its far more healthier.
