  • I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina: This is to all denominations: If Luke 1:46-55 is your Scripture for the Day, this is a good hymn to compliment it, along with Of the Father's Love Begotten and The Bells of Christmas.

  • Echt, zu weihnachten steh ich voll auf sowas. Das ist so schön, ich weiß nicht ob ich weinen oder kotzen möchte.... kein Witz. Sowas geht mir voll nah.

Bin allerdings bekennender Atheist. Also bin ich wohl nur von der rituellen Show überwältigt.

  • Everytime I watch or participate in such a service, it reminds me why I became Anglican. What a "joyful noise unto the Lord."

  • Mormon Tabernacle choir looks & sounds like a bunch of losers compared to this.

  • @CharlieRutan, from Mike......They are Mormons - of course they are effing losers ! LOL

  • @mikehattan how superior of you

  • I'm doing the solo today. D:

  • The only way this would be more perfect for me is if were being played on Christmas eve in a small and humble wooden church.

  • @Aritul ......A 'humble' wooden what......?

  • @mikehattan ??

  • the choir is not good enough. Could improve more!

  • @anuruddha0 are you kidding me ...please tell me you are... they make St.Peters at the vatican sound like a bunch of scorched cats

  • lovely, x

  • Fortunately for me, my parents have never brainwashed me into any religion. I listen to this form of music, simply because I love it.

  • @jane8fred Shame man.

  • As long as they continue to sing this, I will know that the Western world is not godless.

  • I'm not overly religious by any means, but I honestly think there should be more emphasis on this sort of thing at Christmas. People get too wrapped up in getting the latest xbox or whatnot.

  • @alexRawrx I agree. And I couldn't help laughing at the (intentional?) pun on "wrapped" :)

  • @carminacat93 that was purely coincidental! Didn't even realise until you pointed it out :P

  • @alexRawrx Agreed. I gave up on Christmas seventeen years ago for various reasons but I still love to hear this carol. This, and "I Believe in Father Christmas" by Greg Lake are now the only Christmas songs I can bear to listen to. Have a peaceful New Year.

  • cool

  • What a delight

  • This is the only time I wish I was Catholic. You do it good with the Midnight mass

  • @malfoydude Dude, it's an Anglican church and its Lessons and Carols, not mass. But the RC (and Anglicans) do Midnight Mass nicely too on Christmas Eve so you are right.

  • @brassspitoon Thanks for clarifying

  • @malfoydude This isn't Catholic; it's Anglican.

  • My favourite carol!

  • This is my favourite of all the recordings of this carol. The opening chorister is stunning - his tone is sublime and and the rest of the choir respond beautifully to his gentleness.

  • this is heaven

  • 5 people lost their hearing watching this video!

  • i have no belief in a 'God' or whether men or women are better in any way but i do love this music.

  • @tsunchoo

How could you not believe in a God that is responsible for this beautiful music? I hope it will reach out to your soul. I am not one that attends mass every sunday...However, I am spiritual and know ,there is a greater power.

  • @march131958 you don't 'know' anything of the sort and there is no need to believe in a higher power.. in the words of douglas adams 'isn't it enough to appreciate a beautiful garden without having to believe in fairies at the bottom of it?'

  • watching this in July. Yes.

  • no choir does this carol better than King's College i love the choir amazing :D xxx

  • I don't know if it's because of the descant or the organ or all of it together, but nothing can match the last verse. I love the way it builds to that crescendo.

  • merry christmas everyone!

  • Wow... Amazing!

  • i had to sing a solo when i was year 6 and i was terrified! (i'm a girl)

  • beautiful

  • i sang this song in choir....at the end we had to hold a 16 measure note...soo gorgeous..huge concert;.

  • @milkshake1211 You obviously have an issue around homosexuality. Would you like to talk about it?

  • @cantleysugar I would

  • Comment removed

  • @milkshake1211 As a former choirboy, I am offended by this remark. Your comment is not worthy of a reply. I feel sorry for people like you that would make a comment about someone they don't even know. SHAME.

  • @milkshake1211 haha! thats funny mate, nice one!

  • Can someone tell me which church this is in?

  • @chavelasantiago This is in the chapel of King's College, one of the colleges with the University of Cambridge.

  • @chavelasantiago Kings College Cambridge....This choir and St. Johns next door are something everyone should go and hear in person once in there life. Absolutely beautiful!

  • that boy's voice is so beautiful. brings me to tears

  • Dearies, it's not about voices and males or females, it's about religion. Once one does or doesn't accept a God, one is either accepted or not to whatever choir. And pardon me for saying this: England is far more straight than the rest of Europe. Although your Anglican Church was founded because Henry the Eight wanted a divorce. Which is now a non-spoken word in the Anglican Church. Dear me!

  • As Christmas approaches I have to have my daily "fix" of Sam Landman's extraordinary solo. Having heard innumerable opening solos to this beautiful carol I still come back here. If only someone had captured Sam's amazing treble voice on a solo album but King's choristers never seem to make solo albums. At least I cannot think of one.

  • gotta love that lower pitch singing without the top its a nice change from the norm

  • his voice is so beautiful.. lovely

  • This song brings back memories of singing in a Boy Choir during a festival of lessons and carols with several choirs participating. /has nostalgic moment.

  • 2:03 I used to hate singing that line "Christian children all must be mild obedient good as he" at primary school during singing practise in assembly (despite the fact it was a state school with no religious affilation and many religions amongst the pupils). After a few times I protested and stopped singing it, I was an atheist and disobedient from an early age. Thankfully they did away with this religious mumbo jumbo at Secondary school.

  • @TheGoldStandardBoy *practice

  • This is what I look forward to most about Christmas each year. Watching this with a mince pie and hot chocolate just makes Christmas for me. It's so beautiul, makes me cry with joy every year. :)

  • @ihaveawobble I couldn't agree more! It really is a beautiful carol, by far my favourite of all of them! Seasons greetings to you :)

  • i have to say a male soprano is so much more beautiful than a woman soprano! there is such a pureness and there is alot of strength in an all male choir! sometimes i have to say that i like males singing better than females, im in an all girls choir and this is my favourite carol to sing!

  • beautiful!!! Lovely singing.

  • lovely singing..also check out my new christmas song called 'gypsy christmas'..cheers

  • For me the best part of Christmas is listening to the live broadcast of King's College Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve morning here in the US. For a brief period of time I am able to reflect on the meaning of Christmas through this glorious music. Thanks.

  • @johnm28med that is the same for me! I love the Festival of nine lessons. If I'm not able to listen live I have a back-up cd set just in case... So beautiful is it not?!

  • This song is beautiful. Thanks to the person who put this on here.

I will also add this PRAISE GOD that God gave us voices to praise and worship him.

  • Interesting the crucifer and acolytes seem to walk straight but the choir members pretty much wobble from side to side as they walk.

  • my mum used to sing this to me when i was younger, makes me cry every time i hear it :(xx

  • @bettyboopismyidol God bless your mum .

  • This music is awesome. Majestic, yet gentle. How do they do that? Note: The music leader is not making any noise - just moving his hands - musicians should take note.

  • Are any of you actually listening to the music? I'm not here for the bible study.

  • @owenmccullum How about a Koran study or a study of pagan songs?

  • And of course there is I Corinthians 13, where St. Paul says of the three -faith, hope, charity -charity is the greatest, and that the greatest faith without charity is worthless. The Bible says charity is greater than faith!

  • Don't turn this comment section into a second class bible study with always the same cliches. If you don't have the decency to stay back and enjoy this, bugger off. We don't need you to prove your unbiased knowledge of scripture here.

  • Too much to put here, but go read St. James chapter 2 about faith and works. Also, read II Peter 3:14-18, where the leader of the early Church warns about reading St. Paul's words out of context. The Bible is like a jet airplane; it'll take you to the heavens safely IF piloted by properly trained people who have authority to do so. Let the passengers poke at the instruments and take over without proper knowledge of the whole vehicle and you'll be headed for disaster!!

  • @Tancred2008 So, do you do all those 613 decrees published in the law of the Pentetuech? And you still have not dealt with Matt. 25 -the actual word-for-word, detailed description of how we will be judged, the actual criteria which will be used, as promised by Jesus himself! He does NOT mention 'faith alone' nor even 'faith'!!

  • @Tancred2008 I don't 'mix' grace and works -"faith without works is dead" -a BIBLICAL concept. And again, go read JC's words to the rich man -"if you would have life, keep the commandments" YOUR 'problem' is you have no other explanations for texts, words from the savior, which refute 'faith alone.' St. Paul used hyperbole often, in this case to reaffirm that JEWISH 'works' of the OT will not forgive sins and save souls!

  • @Tancred2008 you did not deal with the detailed description, given by the judge himself, of the precise standard by which he will judge us on judgement day! You put words in my mouth. I am not a 'judaizer'! I am not talking of OT ritualisms, but 'caridad' -charity -which MANIFESTS itself outwardly in our 'WORK' to feed the poor, heal the afflicted, care for our brothers. If we negelct these things -and JC has warned us -no amount of faith will save us! "Not all who cry 'Lord!' will be saved!"

  • And what of the rich man in Matt. 19: 16-22 who asked our Lord which WORKS he must do to obtain salvation? What was he told? Was he rebuked for asking about works? Told to 'just have faith alone' and that is it? No, he was told to obey the commandments!! Too many Christians are obssessed with faith to the exclusion of works/ charity!! Take scripture as a cohesive whole -stop cherry picking verses to buttress a 16th century non-biblical doctrine!

  • What about the parable of the rich man and poor Lazarus? What about the good Samaritan parable? What about Matt. 25: 31-46, a detailed description of judgment day based solely on charity, NOT 'faith alone' nor even faith at all? Why did Jesus demand charity toward our fellow-man from us if it just doesn't matter toward our salvation? Our 'works' (charity) do not save us; but neither are we saved WITHOUT them. A VERY biblical concept, indeed! "Faith without works is dead."

  • back to the music: what magnificent sound! this is good stuff, good for the soul. I dream of saving up to fly over from the states, and line up in the early chill to gain entrance, and see and hear this service.

  • Tancred -I am asuming you are trying to whip up a debate about "once saved, always saved"? Sounds like it to me. Am I right? "If you love me, keep my commandments" and "not all who call on the name of the Lord shall be saved" are a few BIBLICAL quotes which come to my mind to refute this! Right?

  • Sex goddess -if you actually read my posts, you'll see the several ways I mention my Catholicism. "I have a right as an RC..." etc. How else do I say it? I AM AN RC. As for sunflowers, it has been a long time since regularly attending a novuus ordo mass, but I definitely remember a song sung often mentioning sunflowers. Granted I am using some hyperbole to make a point, but to argue over whether there has been a major trashing of our liturgy makes you sound naive.

  • geez that kid really chewed out the words

  • Dear Catholic Italian sex goddes - I never said 'all' Catholics. But the fact is our liturgy is an embarrasment for 40 years -singing hymns to sunflowers, etc. and yes, basically dumping our musical patrimony overboard. I have a right as an RC to have proper liturgy. What you call 'bitching' is legitimate and rightful protest to get our liturgy correct. It is what 'grown ups' do.

  • @MrLamontSanford

I agree with you completey - I am Roman Catholic and have searched in vain to find a church in London and even in Europe on my trips that conducts mass with reverence.

The liturgy and the music in the Anglican church is far far superior (even in small parish churches) and they even observe the proper feasts that have now been relegated to the nearest Sundays.

I have spoken to my Bishop about this and he said "I know"! This makes me very sad and angry.

  • May I ask what songs that we are singing to sunflowers as you put it? Because from what Catholic Churches that I've been to, EVERY Catholic song has been about praising God in some form, talking about Jesus, or referring to Mary! Yes, we do sing eccumenical songs that are NOT Catholic, like I said, we are NOT dumping our music. You never answered my question. Are you even Catholic? If you are, then you shouldn't be complaining because you are being just as bad as the non Christians who hate us!

  • Our once-Catholic heritage!! Now Catholics dump their noble patrimony of music to be 'ecumenical', whilst our seperated brethren keep it! What an irony!!

  • MrLamontSanford, that is NOT TRUE! Yes, there are some songs that Catholics sing that are "eccumenical" but for you to say that all of us Catholics dump our music is being extremely ignorant. Don't be ignorant like everyone else out there in the world! Are YOU even Catholic? Because you sure as hell don't seem to act like one when you are bitching about our music. Grow up.

  • Beautiful singing!

  • What a rich Anglican musical tradition we share!

  • A Merry Christmas to all from New York, USA.

  • Merry Christmas! from the Music City, Nashville, Tennessee.

  • nice:)

  • Going to be singing this tonight at Lessons and Carols!

  • A Joyful Christmas To You All From Leeds UK.

  • @Bonoerra And a Happy and Holy Christmas to you also from us in Boston, Mass., USA

  • 'mazing

  • I am going to sing this tomorrow night

at our nine lessons in carols at reformed episcopal church its gonna be awesome : )

  • A Merry Christmas to all from Staffordshire in the United Kingdom as we prepare to celebrate the birth of The King of Kings.

  • I love this song

  • Amen ;)

  • Just Perfect

  • Fine opening solo by Sam Landman. He never was as well known as Connor Burrowes or Anthony Way, but he had a lovely voice that deserves to be remembered.

  • @OlDoinyo Love the way he gently dwells on the first syllable of the word 'David's...''

  • Kings College Choir - beautiful....I recommended to my local superstore to play their music instead of the usual 'dross' that offends my ears every Christmas.

  • I prefer boy sopranos to girl sopranos.

There is something very pure about a boys voice, besides, the clarity is better I think.

  • Christmas really starts for me at 4.45 on Christmas Eve when this is on TV. Absolutely wonderful.

  • @Sharpinsky84 4:45 thats a bit early for me hehe :)

  • @Sharpinsky84 Same here , before that it simply isn't christmas

  • This boy sings the best version I have seen so far.

  • I recently saw this done at worth abbey, they have a fantastic coir, and im an 18 year old pub going guy!

That's how awsome i thought they were!!!

  • Comment removed

  • i sang the first verse on christmas eve in my presbyterian church. i was 10, i am now 16, cant believe that was 6 years ago. wish i could still sing that high..

  • Come on! It is an all male choir. Females can obviously sing soprano at the proper pitch but they can not match a male sopranos tone. I have seen and heard it attempted and it dosen't have the same affect as an all male choir.

  • I agree, boy sopranos have a very superior tone, and boys choir's are oh so traditional ;)

  • @DTBroad - it's an all-male choir because according to the christian bible "women are to be silent in church". this is why more traditional churches will never have women in the choir. what began in prejudice has now blossomed into the rich tradition of boy trebles we see today.

  • @2241322 Its not in the Bible because church did not exist when the Bible was written. the church was an invention of later theologians much like this rule, probably coming from the general patriarchy of the middle church.

  • I agree. The very reason why in Renaissance Italy they'd castrate some boy sopranos before puberty, so that they'd keep the purity to their voices. Totally wrong by the way. They called them castratos by all accounts

  • @QuotesInspirational Total dumbasses for doing that. Only guaranteed that none of the boys would be reproducing more fantastic trebles in the future.. Idiots!

  • @DTBroad then i pity you for not having heard an excelllent girls choir singing pieces like this.

  • Its the tradition, a boy treble always sings the first verse

  • yeah but if a girl sings it better what r u gonna do

at our skool a girl always sings it coz we only got girls plus girls sing better and higher at almost any age

the boy has to be less that 13 to sing that part

  • In this case, whether or not a girl would sing it better is irrelevant, since the Kings College Choir is a boys choir. Also, a treble's range is rarely matched by a girl of the same age. Girl's voices develop gradually into the richness of the adult female voice, but boys reach the same ability before their voices change. A treble's voice is comparable to that of a woman's in range and power. Also, a boys voice can change from anywhere between 11 to 16, although that age is quite uncommon.

  • @beccaday123 - girls do not necessarily sing it BETTERT at all. Can we sing it higher? Generally, yes. But girls are no better than boys in singing. The fact that you usually find more girls than guys in choirs has nothing to do with what gender is the better singer. Yes, I am a girl, and I think this.

  • thing is, this only applies when girls are young

most people find the that mixed choirs of adults tend to be better than male-only choirs

  • @dragoncharm1 who cares if girls can't always sing the best? they're superior to men in almost every other way.

  • @zackhanscom, I honestly can't think of a single instance where women are superior to men. It seems to me that both genders are equal.

  • @zackhanscom what? are you kidding...

  • @dragoncharm1

Not to quibble with you, but have you ever thought why sopranos get more attention than altos? Why tenors get more attention than baritones? It seems that the good Lord designed us so that, everything else being equal (a key qualifier), we are "attuned" to favor singing voices with higher pitches. Thus, it's the soprano who's usually the biggest star of the opera (and not just in the sense of biggest in girth!), not the tenor. I'm a man, by the way.

  • @Erlo3 Not favor, but hear better. You only need a few sopranos to go really a step higher on an ending high note and you can hear it clearly. That's why higher voices get the melody line and lowers voices do harmonies (usually); everyone would be focusing on the higher voices either way.

  • @Mike0Powell

Interesting! I never thought of it that way before. Perhaps I simply "favor" what I "hear better"

Still, as I said, a key qualifier is "everything else being equal"--thus, there are many tenors whose voice I love and many sopronoes whose voices I am NOT so keen on. So, even if, on average, I "favor" soprano voices over bass, well, in any given situation, I might like the bass better. Just as men might be taller than women on average, but any given woman might be taller, etc.

  • @Erlo3 On average I like basses better, so I think it's just a personal preference thing. :D On average I think everyone will prefer a better singer from a worser singer, and this choir did well with this song than some other arrangements on youtube.

  • same at my local church

go girls girls can do it!!!

  • I am singing the solo for verse one

  • this is beautiful.

    i got shivers.

    :)

  • Beautiful. thanks for posting =)

  • I love singing along to this as a Tenor.

Kinda nice harmonizing with the kid soloing at the beginning

  • lovely singing and inspiring... also check out my new christmas song. just hit on gypwin to hear it.cheers

  • What a lovely sound. I don't count myself as a very religious person, but something about this music makes me feel connected, somehow.

Does anyone know if there's any way to get this service, either on the radio or on television, in the US come Christmas Eve?

  • I live near Cincinnati, and it is broadcast on our public classical radio...check your local listings.

  • Hey, thanks. I scanned through the stations last year and couldn't find it, but through a roundabout Google search, I just found that the ceremony will be broadcast on NPR's station in Philadelphia the morning of Christmas Eve.

    Thanks for the tip!

  • @liberavieve you can also listen online to BBC Radio 4 on Christmas Eve. The service starts at 3pm GMT.

  • Quite a few NPR stations will carry it. WGBH in Boston carries it at 6:00 PM Christmas Eve.

  • Many thanks; I love this choir!

Simple the best in the world in the best carols cerimonial in all seasons!.

  • This brings back such richly beautiful memories of my time as a student of music in the UK; actually being invited to play @ St. Paul's, circa 1976!!! (a few years ago...hey, I said they were "memories!) LOL. Flawless. Thanks for posting

  • There's nothing like it... I just got back from a joint choir cathedral tour of England, Canterbury, and France... We performed Dyson's Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in D at St. Paul's... THAT is an experience...

  • Angelic voices.

  • I'm sure this has more to do with sleep deprivation than accurate observation, but the lad at 3:46 (2nd from right) looks like a very young Tom Cruise. What a superb choir! Bravo.

  • Yup, get some sleep and may flights of angels ...; )

  • Christmas wouldn't be right without carols from king's collage

  • superb.thanks for posting

  • I know i'm probably wrong, but I swear the crucifer is wearing a fiddleback!

  • I heard(and recorded) this awesome service this past Christmas Eve(the 90th. anniversary)! And I'll tell you, it's a feast for the emotions and the senses. I always feel tears come to my eyes when they get to "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "Hark The Herald Angels Sing." If those two songs don't bring tears to your eyes, then you've lost all emotion!

  • By the way, when I first listened to this Carol lived from BBC in Singapore in 1998 (maybe), my first impression for this Carol was that it was just too wonderful to be described by words :)

  • How beautifull , The fadeing winter afternoon light , a cold december day ,Christmass eve .

  • Thanks for sharing this wonderful music. The video and audio are very good and the music is so peaceful. King College Boys' Choir is sure a well known choir. I will make another visit to Cambridge soon.

  • fantastic

  • Im not a religious person and i have never beleived in any gods, but i have to admit this hymn, with all those people siging in rejoice together really hits home the power of faith to me.

  • Sect ? In response to buffedtrainer's comment.

  • The greatest soprano soloist for this piece

  • Ah ... that last verse: "Not in that poor lowly stable with the oxen standing by we shall see Him, but in Heaven, set at God's right hand on high: There His children gather round bright like stars, with glory crowned."

For people of faith, that about says it all.

  • Is this King's College Choir? x

  • of course this is King's College Choir :)

  • Positively haunting. This carol makes me cry, every single time I hear it. Our church has a co-ed adult choir and a grown woman sings the first verse. It's not politically correct to say this, but it's just not the same as hearing the little boy's treble voice. The purity of the child's voice sends shivers down my spine. Merry Christmas.

  • Don't worry about "politically correct"! No one can do everyting equally well! And I utterly agree with you about the qualitative difference between the voioces of a treble and a soprano. If you want to hear the most magnificent treble imaginable, search for Louis-Alexander Desire (pron: Desiree) on You Tube. Breathtaking! Tearmaking!

  • Christ is born,Amen.

  • love jesus

  • How do they get the young men to behave so well?!?! There are quite a few people in my grade (8th) who don't behave that good.

  • Its because english people re well behaved all together lol Im a choir boy. :) and im well behaved.

  • JESUS...IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON...

    He's my homeboy! (lol)

  • bible basher
