  • How is the finish on the model of these machines its hard to see in the video. Is it smooth

  • Our school has a Makerbot. I helped build the filament spindle and the heated platform.

  • cool!

  • what kind of program do you need for this machine?

  • looks like a gem :)

  • How loud is it?

  • It can be noisy, I wouldn't use it at night. But through the day, its not a problem. You can quieten the machine by polishing the axis rods, tuning the stepper motor drivers so they run quieter, and by mounting the 'bot on a softer surface. It can rattle things as its zooming back and forward.

  • Does the raft automatically build itself before each print? or do you have to add it to the CAD files?

  • All you do is model the item you wish to print. The program called Skeinforge automatically slices up your model layer by layer and adds the raft for you. I will (eventually) have a tutorial on my website! People can feel free to make one themselves.

  • @conrad2468

the raft is automatically made with all 3D printers as a way to remove the model easily without harming the model itself (because some times you have to actually take a chisel to it) same thing with the support walls. its all added in when you import your STL (or what have you) into your program of choice to send the print to the machine.
