All of the trades mentioned were horrible. i'd like to add a pick that was traded in the wendel clarke trade coming back to toronto turned out to be ROBERTO LUONGO... im sad now. btw wtf was burke thinking picking up beauchmin? that guy doesnt play his position, gets caught, cant hit the net, and looks like a bird.
Matt Cooke is a dirty player he should of gotten at least a game suspension for that hit. He didn't even get a penalty for the hit. You can see in the replay that his elbow went up! Really the refs must be blind ! The night before when Mike Ryder hit an islander from behind Ryder got kicked out and the islander was FINE!
why the fuck shoudlnt we buy tickets? we love our hockey and our team sorry we wana see our team and other teams in the nhl and all this talk about kessel once we get a good center and a team that grows around him we might have made one of the best trades who knows what those picks will turn out to be but we added alot this year alot more then the last few years so was one more year our time will come soon not right away but soon
Rask for Raycroft the worst....... the Kessel one well i dont think that brian burke was expecting a bottom 5 finish this year i mean i tought that this year's team was not worst than last year's..well on paper... so burkie tought that he woued draft 6,7 or 8 at best. Your prob not getting a better player than kessel this year drafting 6th or 7th DOSE IT MAKE SENSE ? ANYBODY ?
Well besides the mentioned Rask/Raycroft deal that was just downright awful and the very recent Kessel/picks swap, Jason Smith to Edmonton was just pathetic.
Bruins fan here, so I'll respond to both questions. On the Cooke hit: dirty hit, he follows through with his elbow (watch all the way through to after the hit). I would've been fine if he'd taken out Savvy with a shoulder-to-shoulder check.
On the other question: Rask for Raycroft. Nyah-nyah-nyah-ne-nyah-nyaaaaaaah. Kidding, I'm sorry. We really robbed you there.
Hey Steve, I searched Youtube for more of your vids and I came across this other vlogger. It is only the first vid of his that I have seen but he is also really good and he mentions you in his vid. You probably know all about him already but here is the vid I am referring to.
Why I Don't Make Dallas Stars Videos And just so you know, I didn't see your earlier comment about Cammalleri when I typed mine.
We signed Komiserik for a lot and Gaborik was available for not much more. We have enough D for 2 teams and everyone cries about not having a top 6 forward. Well there was our chance, we won't have it this summer unless we trade Kaberle which we will and I wish we didn't have to.
To everyone hating the kessel trade please keep all this in mind:
At the beginning of this year the leafs looked promising! They played strong in preseason, seemed to mesh even with kessel on the shelf, the thought was if the team could stay at .500 then when Kessel showed up the leafs = playoffs.
As we all know things went down hill...quick.
Remember, kessel is 22 and proven, draft picks aren't guranteed
I honestly believe its trading Tuukka Rask for Raycroft is the worst.
If you asked 29 other GM's if they could have either Kessel, or one of Seguin or Hall - they all take one of the junior players...if you tell them that they can also have the following years first rounder, they laugh hysterically, and say yes.
That being said, I would still categorize the Rask for Raycroft deal as the worst for the Leafs.
And.... Im gonna be bold and say that the trade for Kessel was pretty dumb too... considering the rebuild thats going on... those two draft picks would be nice...
There really isnt one.... THERES A BILLION OF THEM
MLSE buying this team was the downfall of the Leafs and all of the bad stuff that has happened afterward can all be blamed on them. No trade contracts being signed to too many players. The Kessel trade was not a bad trade when it was made but it has become a bad trade. Trading Rask for Raycroft was a bad deal.
getting rid of wellwood was one of the best moves.
he has to be one of the most inconsistent players out there, doesnt play well w/o the puck, turns it over often and is almost never physical (being 5'10" has something to do w/ that).
he suffered the blue and white disease worse then most... i mean the guy got kicked out canucks camp last year for being out of shape.
the worst trade was kessel. hes a great player and a 40 goal scorer when he plays all season but i wouldve loved this trade if it happened after this years draft
IMO the worst trade is the kessel trade, however the signing oh john ferguson as gm is what made this team terrible. I mean pat quinn shouldve been gm while paul maurice shouldve been coach.
The worst trade was obviously so clearly trading Tuukka Rask for Andrew Raycroft. Heinsight is the word people need to use before they bash teh crap out of the Phil Kessel trade.
I just watched Cooke's hit on Savard and I'm sick of this...sick of these elbows to the head/shoulders to the head. It's discusting.
I hate how these guys will throw cheap shots and pretend like they didn't know what they were doing...Professionals trained to know their body and what they can with their body and they have the gull to say they didn't know what these hits would do.
I love the grit of hockey as much as the next person, but wake up and smell the concussions NHL!
oh and not trade kaberle. he's only going to get older and we had to trade him this year for a good forward or first round pick. we have more than enough d
As much as I love Kessel I think trade 2 first rounders and a 2nd rounder for him was a terrible trade. If you think of it this way, with or without him this year we would have finished in the same place...so...if we have our first round picks we would have had a top 5 pick which has to be as good or better than kessel. Kessel is a 40 goal scorer but 2 high first rounders and a second could easily be double that
Say Boston drafts Tyler Seguin. He could become a bust quicker than a 40 goal scorer, then what happens? Burke ends up looking like a genious. Next years draft is weak anyway
the actual last little while as of this trade deadline...why get peluso? why although it was a shitty draft pick i mean arent we supposed to be "REBUILDING"
and i gotta say not trading sundin although he did lots for us when he was a leaf has fucked us over...and not trading kaberle!!! although he did say he wants to stay a leaf...
but speaking of players saying they want to remain where they are remember kovalchuk saying he wants to be a THRASHER FOREVER and then rejecting $110Mil offer
I think there were a lot of really bad moves. It all probably started when the Leafs weren't able to re-sign Nieuwendyk and Roberts and just went downhill from there. Trades and signings that stick out to me right now are:
The Kessel trade...you build through the draft - you don't trade away first round picks for a guy like Kessel. Burke says he would do it again...but that is just bull-shit for public consumption...no one in their right mind would make that deal if they knew they were going to be 29th...or lower.
i believe all trades and drafts were good , because in the long run the lefs have picked up some of the soon to be best players in the leauge such as grabo , schenn , kulemen , kessel phaneuf and so on , the leafs are set for a good long time now , they just need to find some chemistry and get their ass' in gear.
Personally I like kessel and think he will be an awesome player soon to come, but I dont believe the leafs should have given up 2 first rounders and a second for him so early, I would have waited at least a year before I picked up a player liek kessel to be on the wing after this year to a guy like tyler seguin.
I love every other deal burke has put togeather, stempniak, stajan hagman poni toskala and blake never accomplished anything in toronto, they were just a bunch of average players
The Toskala trade actually looked good....for one season and even the Raycroft trade was decentish for one year.
These stick out to me:
Boyes, McCauley and a first for Owen Nolan
Jeff Finger signing
Jason Blake signing
Coliacovo and Steen for Stempniak
Colton Orr signing (6 PIM, 6TOI as Dangle said)
Hate to say it, but getting Burke as GM was brutal too. The Phaneuf trade was good, the Kessel/Giguere trades have potential, but I don't like the goons that call themselves the Leafs these day.
umm worste trade ever was getting rid of our first rounder a few years back and that team used the pick to select a certain player. although the leafs needed a goaltender and luongo was still undrafted at the time the leafs pick was used.
When I first saw the hit Cooke gave Savard I thought it was pretty dirty/. After watching it in slow motion on my DVR to me and my friend it looked more like Cooke was going for the upper body.
I didn't like the Exelby trade. I personally don't have any problem with him, but we gave up Tim Stapleton (Who's a damn fine player in the AHL, and seemed to play decently for us in those 2 games that he played), and I liked Kubina, too. I understand it was more of a salary dump, but still. Bad trade. Exelby is scratched every other game, and Kubina was/is a good defenceman.
How about a top ten 10. Jason Blake Signing. 9. Mike Komisarek Signing. 8. Francois Beauchemin Signing. 7. Trading Alex Steen and Carlo Colaicovo for Lee Stempniak. 6. Trading Lee Stempniak for Matt Jones, a 4th rounder, and a 7th rounder in 2010. 5. Jeff Finger Signing. 4. Trading our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks in 2007 for Vesa Toskala, and Mark Bell. 3. Trading Tuuka Rask for Andrew Raycroft. 2. Re-signing of Bryan McCabe 1. Hiring John Ferguson Jr.
Pat quinn tried to re-sign Cujo, but he left by his own choice to try and win a Cup w/ detriot.
Belfour was the last GREAT goalie that played for the leafs. I don't think raycroft or toskala ever stole games in a row like belfour or cujo did to get us through playoff series... jury is still out on Gus and Giggy
@Slegnirp So what? That's the logic the Leafs have had for years. We got Ron Francis at like 40. Is that a good deal just cuz he's won a cup. If the player is no longer good it doesn't matter how many cups they've won.
So what, Giggy is good for the rest of the year so Gustavasson can to 100 percent for reals by next year. Gustavsson has been steller and he's played more in the past year than almost anyone in the NHL. The Giguere trade was made for cap reasons, it was good don't get me wrong, but I'm not sold on Giguere at all, hes been playing downhill for the past few season.
WOW im shocked no one said the Toskala trade a first round pick for that bum? COME ON... Anyways i do agree with most of the people here the Jeff Finger signing was pretty bad.. Important note *************** Kulemin has been rumored to go to Russia :( ********* I hope for the leafs sake that he doesnt i really think this kid can develop into a great first line player
flyer fan interjection: scott hartnell should get rid of that hair. maybe it would turn his game around. he's been awful all season, and thankfully his teammates played a pretty decent game to overshadow his shitty performance last night. while he was fighting phaneuf you could just see his lack of confidence and frustration in his play. he passes harder than donovan mcnab and is your goto guy if you're looking for a turnover while youre on the powerplay. he's gotta change something.
Definitely the worst trade ever was when the leafs traded tukka rask and a 1rst round draft pick for raycroft. This sucked because raycroft played like shit in toronto and the 1rst rounder ended up being PHIL KESSEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I dont understand how the Antropov trade was a bad one? Maybe you forgot he was a UFA that summer and was looking for a lot of money for someone who to be honest has never turned into the player we all thought he was. Poni for luca was actually a pretty good deal after watching this kid play on the leafs im amazed how strong he is on the puck. He also does what most leafs dont do TAKE THE PUCK AWAY.
yeeeah, but just seeing how the sharks turned out building from McCauley...he captained them for a while there, and boyes turned out to be a big NHL success!
Hmm probably the worst trades of the year has gotta be when we traded off poni-boy to the penguins in exchange for what a draft pick, we give up one of our top scorers for a draft pick am i missing something here?
Also the NHL has to do something about that hit on savard, it's warranting a 8 game suspension and a fine.
Wasn't a draft pick... was a defenseman we flipped for a 5th rounder, and a Toronto native Prospect who has already shown he can use his body very effectively despite his current size and who is very likely to turn out to be just as good if not better than pony.
Worst transaction was the hiring of John Ferguson Junior. With him we have suffered through some bad contracts (cough*mccabe*cough) and some terrible trades (toskala anyone?).
Raycroft for Rask, Jeff Finger, Hall Gill... really the salary cap in general has been a skunker for the leafs who without it would have a LOT more money to give out to potential free agents, although thats noone on the leafs fault. JFJ was a horrible GM overall, conisering Dominc Moore was probably the best acquistion he made. They shoudve kept him.
I will define the "last little while" as the last 5 years as they have missed the playoffs in all of them. 2 Transactions really stand out. 1 was the McCabe extension. They are done with him now but it hurt for a while. The other was the Raycroft for Rask trade. I don't think I need to say more about that one.
+1 for Pokemon cards, I mean everyone in our age group has been associated with them in one way or another =D
Also I think that easily the worst transaction was the signing of Komisarek. He was probably the most overrated FA on July 1st, and not only did we sign him, we signed him for 4.5 mill (more than Kaberle? Okay there). This also means that Luke Schenn won't be getting top minutes any time soon, which is a waste.
I don't really like pointing out what I think are bad transactions because, the way I see it Brian Burke has done this rebuilding process twice before and been successful with them, so rather than me trying to point out his mistakes I think he deserves a little credit. He got the Leafs Phil Kessel, Dion Phaneuf, and a solid goalie in Giggy. Sure he had to pay a price for Kessel, but he also got rid of Blake and Toskala in the SAME DEAL! Burke deserves a lot more credit than he gets.
@kooger123 Fair point, but still you gotta give him more credit than he gets. If I have one problem with the Leafs its Jeff Finger getting 3.5 a year for basically sitting and when he does play doing relatively nothing.
colton orr was out for blood last night but nobody would answer the bell... Philly is a bunch of sean averys... the worst trade that they made was getting rid of hagman the rest of the trade was great.
either of those or the no trade clause donations... were it not for those I think we'd be in a much better spot, even if mats could have been moved at the deadline that year.

@Slegnirp So what? That's the logic the Leafs have had for years. We got Ron Francis at like 40. Is that a good deal just cuz he's won a cup. If the player is no longer good it doesn't matter how many cups they've won.
kooger123 1 year ago
@Slegnirp
ThatAtheistBastard 1 year ago
Yeah, maybe. But he will make an excellent mentor for Gustavsson.

Raycroft for Rask....

flyer fan interjection: scott hartnell should get rid of that hair. maybe it would turn his game around. he's been awful all season, and thankfully his teammates played a pretty decent game to overshadow his shitty performance last night. while he was fighting phaneuf you could just see his lack of confidence and frustration in his play. he passes harder than donovan mcnab and is your goto guy if you're looking for a turnover while youre on the powerplay. he's gotta change something.

Definitely the worst trade ever was when the leafs traded tukka rask and a 1rst round draft pick for raycroft. This sucked because raycroft played like shit in toronto and the 1rst rounder ended up being PHIL KESSEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, remember when the Penguins sucked? Ha ha, thank godness that's over!

signing of finger
rask for raycroft
stempniak for steen and carlo
antropov for a 2nd and 5th
Poni for luca and 5th
luca will become a good 2nd/3rd line guy and hopefully and some scoring .
Kessel for 2 1st and 2nd(top 5 pick, top 10 pick and the 2nd will be a guy that get's bumped out of the 1st round)
ummm has toronto actually every made a good trade besides the dion trade...
deathknot1 1 year ago
I dont understand how the Antropov trade was a bad one? Maybe you forgot he was a UFA that summer and was looking for a lot of money for someone who to be honest has never turned into the player we all thought he was. Poni for luca was actually a pretty good deal after watching this kid play on the leafs im amazed how strong he is on the puck. He also does what most leafs dont do TAKE THE PUCK AWAY.

Pat Quinn and John Fergusson Jr. they really screwed us over! the steen and coliacovo trade...and trading Boyes and McCauley for Owen Nolan.
lfcmyers7 1 year ago
i dont think nolan was a bad pick up at the time... we were adding grit and goals for a Cup push.
Mccauley only played fir 3 years after that trade anyway before being bought out by NJ

yeeeah, but just seeing how the sharks turned out building from McCauley...he captained them for a while there, and boyes turned out to be a big NHL success!

ya... boyes would be a nice player to have back these days...

All started with the firing of Quinn...and not placing him as GM.
bobblehead1706 1 year ago
Raycroft for Rask, Jeff Finger, Hall Gill... really the salary cap in general has been a skunker for the leafs who without it would have a LOT more money to give out to potential free agents, although thats noone on the leafs fault. JFJ was a horrible GM overall, conisering Dominc Moore was probably the best acquistion he made. They shoudve kept him.
brahmabullfan 1 year ago
I will define the "last little while" as the last 5 years as they have missed the playoffs in all of them. 2 Transactions really stand out. 1 was the McCabe extension. They are done with him now but it hurt for a while. The other was the Raycroft for Rask trade. I don't think I need to say more about that one.

steen and coliacovo for lee stempniak who we then traded for a 5th rounder. i mean really?

19markle19 1 year ago 2
@19markle19 I'm sorry but Toskala was going to be gone in 2 months anyways and Giguere is 6 mill of salary. So it's not such an amazing trade
kooger123 1 year ago
@kooger123 Fair point, but still you gotta give him more credit than he gets. If I have one problem with the Leafs its Jeff Finger getting 3.5 a year for basically sitting and when he does play doing relatively nothing.

colton orr was out for blood last night but nobody would answer the bell... Philly is a bunch of sean averys... the worst trade that they made was getting rid of hagman the rest of the trade was great.
MrBigJeesh 1 year ago
you're saying it's the "worst" trade because of ONE player who may have been alright? you have to give something to get something...
FlockOfSharks 1 year ago
jason blake signing?
bryan mccabe signing?
either of those or the no trade clause donations... were it not for those I think we'd be in a much better spot, even if mats could have been moved at the deadline that year.
