To those asking if the beaches are still like this today, NO! I just returned from a weekend in Destin for the first time ever, i love it! The beaches were gorgeous, sand and water alike, were all amazing! It is on top of my list right now for places i would love to move to.

1.) The water is "yellow" because of the June Grass, aka: mass amounts of sea algae or seaweed that blooms in the shorebreak during a few weeks in the month of June every year. Calm down.
2.) I am sure those kids are alive..........they probably spent a relatively short amount of time in that water. Obviously the entire population living along the Gulf Coast did not perish over the summer. Get real.

Actually, I do want to go on vacation there this summer, but I am not sure of what to believe. I have a skin condition, and I would be so mad if I came there and there was oil all over the sand. The local people should clean it up for us northern people so we can come down there, pay our monies to have nice vacations. I may just go to Canada this year. Where can I get an accurate report on the condition of the beach. Seriously, make reservations? Not so sure yet.

No oil now. Wasn't much there at the beaches anyway. Like jswilliams just said, MIRAMAR BEACH! Sandestin area, and this was in, perhaps, June?! I personally live here in the Destin area, and went down there to Sandestin to see them myself, which I did one evening. Days later, GONE! Workers by the dump truck loads came and picked up EVERY SINGLE PIECE of oily goo and disposed of it. Since then, it has never returned. This is January, and we have GORGEOUS beaches here in Destin, as we always have!
This was in Miramar Beach not Destin. Furthermore, this was pretty much an isolated incident. Destin and Miramar really didnt get hit at all. The beaches look beautiful as always.
This is insane! how can parents allow their children to be submerged in this enviromental death trap??!! The mother told her child she didnt want to touch the oil on her kids foot to get it off...yet they are walking thru it & swimming in this ****??!! Are the beaches fine there? My and my fiance want to come there to the beaches so bad. We have been to all the beached down the east coast, up the other side of Fl, but we have never been to this area of the beautiful white sand. I mean we are going to stay for like 7 days in a condo right on the beach, so how is the oil situation? Thanks
As if the oil isn't bad enough think of the millions of gallons of corexit they pumped into the sea. Corexit has been banned everywhere else in the world because of it's incredibly high toxicity and ineffectiveness. I wouldn't go on that beach without an NBC suit and gas mask, never mind letting my kids play in it!

That is SOOO DEPRESSING!! Destin had some of the most beautiful beachs I had ever visited in Florida. I can't believe people are actually swimming in it! The ocean wasn't coming in brown when I was there in 1995. Wow, time to re-plan next years vacation.
Fortunately, that was the only day, June 23rd, that oil was found on that ONE spot on the beach where he happened to be. I was there that week and where we were had no oil. This one spot was cleared that very night, and this beach was fine the very next day. I was down the beach less than one mile from where this video was shot.
The beaches are ALL quite nice since that ONE horrible day in ONE spot....

This might be off key here, but talking about parents who should not be parents, there are KY police officers, (of a large city I might add, and the city begins with the letter L), should not be police officers. Here in L, KY the officers will stand and tell you that parents have a right to paddle their children. I asked the officer, you mean paddle as in using a paddle? He said how ever the parent feels fit to whip their children. I said, but you are avoiding the situation...
con't....avoid the situation regarding rule of correct parenting skills of discipline. The officer was so stupid. All he wanted to say over and over and over again was "it's legal in the state of KY to whip your children" He was so stupid and uneducated. I called the county attorney, and reported the officer, and demanded that the office submit a report to his office, and send DPS. Next day, DPS removed the children from the home.
Why are there not environmental protection people on these beaches either keeping people off, telling people what they're walking through, or posting signs or something... pathetic.

Oil is not toxic if you just get it on your skin. As long as you don't rely on feathers to swim and fly or rely on the fish in the water for nutrition, relax.

More concern about tourism dollars than safety in Destin, special beachcomber machine put out on sand at night to put up tar balls, we need video verification from a youtube member in the area.
as a destin native who visits the beach often, i have yet to see a tar ball. this video was filmed during the 3 days oil was on the beach, which was when i didn't go. but thats the thing, if there's oil, dont go to the beach. our area has so many other cool things to do off the white sands. and please, tourists, if you're upset that our beaches have oil, don't take it out on rental agencies or local businesses. i'm tired of reading letters sent into the newspaper from grumpy visitors.

We have been to all the beached down the east coast, up the other side of Fl, but we have never been to this area of the beautiful white sand. As if the oil isn't bad enough think of the millions of gallons of corexit they pumped into the sea. Corexit has been banned everywhere else in the world because of it's incredibly high toxicity and ineffectiveness. I wouldn't go on that beach without an NBC suit and gas mask, never mind letting my kids play in it!

That is SOOO DEPRESSING!! Destin had some of the most beautiful beachs I had ever visited in Florida. I can't believe people are actually swimming in it! The ocean wasn't coming in brown when I was there in 1995. Wow, time to re-plan next years vacation.

Fortunately, that was the only day, June 23rd, that oil was found on that ONE spot on the beach where he happened to be. I was there that week and where we were had no oil. This one spot was cleared that very night, and this beach was fine the very next day. I was down the beach less than one mile from where this video was shot.
The beaches are ALL quite nice since that ONE horrible day in ONE spot....

This might be off key here, but talking about parents who should not be parents, there are KY police officers, (of a large city I might add, and the city begins with the letter L), should not be police officers. Here in L, KY the officers will stand and tell you that parents have a right to paddle their children. I asked the officer, you mean paddle as in using a paddle? con't....avoid the situation regarding rule of correct parenting skills of discipline. The officer was so stupid. All he wanted to say over and over and over again was "it's legal in the state of KY to whip your children" He was so stupid and uneducated. I called the county attorney, and reported the officer, and demanded that the office submit a report to his office, and send DPS. Next day, DPS removed the children from the home.
How is DPS handling this situation?

as a destin native who visits the beach often, i have yet to see a tar ball. this video was filmed during the 3 days oil was on the beach, which was when i didn't go. but thats the thing, if there's oil, dont go to the beach. our area has so many other cool things to do off the white sands. and please, tourists, if you're upset that our beaches have oil, don't take it out on rental agencies or local businesses. i'm tired of reading letters sent into the newspaper from grumpy visitors.
