  • Oh my god. I am an alto singer, and the man who sings soprano can definitely sing higher than me. I'm not sure whether to be ashamed or amazed....

  • Okay, so my friend and I are singing this song for chorus contest and I’m the soprano. I think that man sings higher than me.. /:

  • 0:40 check out the 'stash

  • My mind was just blown

  • I have seen few a cappella groups that actually sound good - these guys sound amazing.

The soprano (Gregory Peebles) also looks like a shorter, more fortunate Howie Mandel..

  • Wow.

  • I played this for band and just hearing it sang makes me cry just the same

  • This was amazing!! Either the bald guy who sang high never hit puberty or had his testicles removed because that is the highest I have ever heard a grown man sing.

  • @12goobers im guessing neither. it's not even that difficult for most men to reach those notes, just the difference is the skill and tone/control with which he accesses that part of his range. part of me might even venture to say some of them may not even be using their falsettos to reach those notes. it is indeed amazing

  • Decent; I like the arrangement...

  • There is no finer performance of this song. If any of you ever have a chance to see Chanticleer live, do it. You'll never forget the experience.

  • :42 best moustache in the world!

  • This was absolutely amazing! Our guy group at high school is doing this and... Well it's nice to hear how it's supposed to sound, haha. Well done!

  • I love to hear the countertenor! Great!

  • 1:26 on the right, lead singer from the beegies :P

  • Epic. All I can say is wow

  • The absolute gold standard

  • Once again, gentlemen, a gorgeous aural sensation!!

  • Am i the only one who noticed the black guy all the way on the left?

  • Hey, hey GLEE... SUCK. ON. THIS.

  • This is so boss

  • I can dislike this. No problem. It's a simple tune that doesn't mean a thing to me. Well sung, but nothing like Rheinberger's Abendlied or Poulenc's Quatre Petites Prieres.

  • Fantastic!!!!

how can there be people who do not like it??

como pode existir pessoas que não goste de musica?

  • Whose arrangement is this? Simply beautiful. Thank you.

  • Four people clearly have no souls.

  • @hautbois2460 They are probably just gingers.

  • @whitechapelfan66 WOMP WOMP

  • And I thought Justin beiber could hit some notes.

  • @teddiesbite did you seriously just compare Justin Bieber to this counter-tenor? really?

  • Oh wow, I can't believe people disliked this!!!!

  • Wow. That was just beautiful. Beautiful harmony! Amazing timing! Just, wow! You guys are just breathtaking.

  • "were bound away" in the beginning, my fav part

  • Simply beautiful

  • whats up with that guys mustache at 00:39

  • @Meganrosealto That is eric alatorre. He rocks the stache like that.

  • @SamuraiHelmet hehe damn right he does.

  • Beautiful!!

  • literally left me speechless. incredible

  • There's just something about the timbre of men's voices in harmony. No offense to women's voices at all.

  • that was emotional

  • i hate when i see dislikes on videos like this. some people are just hella jelly

  • AMAZING

  • 0:38 .......cat whiskers

  • absolutely my favorite version of Shenandoah!

  • @marythegreatgatsby i completely agree, gotta love the CT solo

  • This is such a beautiful song, but I've never heard it like this. Needless to say, I'm crying. Are any of these men up for grabs? I need a man who can sing like this to sing with me. DUET!

  • Of course I cried, like so many other people. But really, is it just me, or does one of them look like Neil Patrick Harris?

  • @hushvera1 I thought so too haha

  • OH my god.

  • A fabulous American Folk Song just elevated to the stratosphere by Chanticleer. You boys kill everything you do! Thanks for the goose bumps! Keep those pipes oiled!

  • I was fine until the countertenor sang. Then I cried my heart out.

  • @HegemonWiggi I just laughed

  • @HegemonWiggi Me too. This has been one of my favorite songs my entire life. It's always so wonderful to hear a male soprano. The quality of their voice is different from a female soprano and very beautiful.

  • This makes my mouth drop. Hahaha.

  • Possibly the best thing I'd ever heard. Wow.

  • Amazing counter-tenor. Leave it to Chanticleer to perform such an iconic piece so masterfully.

  • one word....WowWonderfulAwesomeAmazingBeautifulUncomprabale! It's up to YOU to either choose one of those, or make your own.

  • That 'stache on the far right is pretty awesome. Just sayin!

  • Absolutely Beautiful!!! And I don't even listen to this style of music, but I definitely appreciate the beauty of the voices in the song!

  • hey look, its gabe! cool... wish you would come back to lcc

  • The sounds are amazing, the artistry is sublime. This is truly inspirational on every level.

  • Awesome chord at 3:33 & 4:11

  • Damn..... He can sing high. Impressive!

  • Chanticleer!

  • excellent. who are these talented men?

  • With your catfish 0:45

With your only black guy 0:53

    With your bald 1:07

    With Jesus 1:13

    With your soprano 1:48

    With your soprano round 2:50

    With your constipation 0:00 - 4:31

    With your beautiful 0:00 - 4:31

  • This is breathtakenly beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

  • I actually prefer the old Robert Shaw Chorale's rendition of this classic.

  • how is this tenor going higher than me... ):

  • @Luddaful It's called countertenor. See also The King's Singers and Jimmy Sommerville of Communards and Bronski Beat.

  • SIMPLY AWESOME

  • 0:45 epic facial hair.

  • I had to remember to breathe after this....because they all took my breath away! :)

  • Ohmyyyygoooooooooddddddddddddddddddddddddddd.

  • @lloyd7539 point well taken: there is a problem with the highly educated &part of the problem is a noticeable "lameness". People tend to forget the esoteric grit of the uneducated male and sometimes female too. The ability to deal with reality and practicality. It was the down-to-earth grit and realistic rustic practicality that created this song in the first place. no-nonsense pioneers, trappers, river boat sailors and clipper ship sailors. just that we realize chanticleer style is also legit.

  • I'm all choked up, v'clempt even.

  • just epic....

  • WOW just WOW

  • 0:38

    Just Epic

  • 0:28 oh shiit

  • That tenor's falsetto is amazing! Bravo, bravo!

  • WOW!!!

  • I admire the guy with the solo....I'm a girl and I can't even hit those notes! Props to him!

  • @tms894 most guys join choir because of the ladies if you hadn't figured that one out yet. A good singer is more attractive than a macho wife beater XD.

  • @Icyveins906 I am not attracted to any many who can sing higher than I do.

  • @tms894 what about the Bee Gees or the Beach Boys? I think the male soprano might also be able to sing lower and actually may be using a falsetto which was also used by many women to go into bass notes like Yma Zumak and Joanie Mitchell. I rarely resort to falsetto except when I'm about to attempt a note that is well outside my register. Male sopranos and altos were found extensively in medieval Europe and was featured in a Robin Hood film staring Sean Connery. Also common in Samoan songs.

  • @tms894 the one is using what's called a false setto. Pardon my spelling. It's a weird singing technique, it's not technically his full 'voice'

  • My Mum's favourite song. Brought back a lot of memories. Thanks for this beautiful rendition.

  • Such Talent!!!

  • My highschool choir is doing this songg :D Hopefully we can pull off something like that ^^

  • Good Lord.

  • hard for words to describe how magnificent it sounds

  • Goosebumps. My son will be there soon, I can feel it.

  • @andradebiscotti if he makes it, I congratulate him and admit my envy, but the absolute elite of the elite of the elite of America is all this group will accept. If he doesn't make it, it only means that he still has something to aspire to.

  • The counter-tenor at 1:40 is amazing. Such a great falsetto.

  • Nothing more amazing then perfect harmony. [:

  • Oh my, I've been searching for a good recording of this song...and I do believe I've found it.

  • Heavenly!

  • This is so good. I miss shennendoah valley too!!

  • I love this so much.

P.S. I don't know who the guy is second from the right end . . . but he's freaking gorgeous. :P

  • @eeli1 Hee hee; I'm a fan of the 4th gentleman on the right.

  • I have seen them in person. They are magnificent, in voice and in personality.

  • Pretty sure God Favorited this too...

  • klasse!!!

  • I hope people appreciate just how much better this is than those college choirs... even the good ones.

  • @phaseblade well duh, they have to go through two crazy auditions, only the best of the best make it, and when Eric leaves I'm gonna take my chance at being the Bass of chanticleer :)

  • @cbcbcbcbcb55 that is a pretty steep assumption to assume that Eric will ever leave :p that man has the best bass voice ever and a mustache to boot!

  • Astounding.

  • This video has made my day, and possibly a lot more with it! Thankyou for such beautiful music :)

  • I compliment the countertenors and that guy's mustache

  • And to think Rebecca Black has millions of views. - _ - This world is twisted.

  • How does this video have less than 30,000 Votes!?

  • Wow.

  • I think this is one of the best renditions of this piece that I have ever heard. Bravo.

  • Fantastic.

  • amazing song. even better performance. this was great

  • HOLY CRAP, THAT MUSTACHE!!!!!!!

  • They sound so angelic; and the counter tenor is awesome!

  • Sounds so angelic!

  • Stunning!

  • wow!!! i am a vocal music education major, so this may seem nerdy, but i am stunned at the purity and clarity of their sound! i have heard them sooo many times and everytime, it gets better! they have this amazing ability to listen to one another and use the exact vowels in each and every syllable. why can't all choirs be like this?! no fair!!!

  • it was nice meeting u guys at Sunnyside High School.. The best

  • haha i love the dudes facial hair way on the riight!(:

  • the bald guy is a beast. not at all embarrassing to sing that high, i'm jealous. AS a tenor one in my men's ensemble i wish i could do that!

  • Playin this in ms it is awesome!!!!!

  • One of the best, if not the best, interpretations of this song I've ever heard.

  • man, i wish I could have heard this at the St.louis Basillica Cathedral! You guys are amazing :)

  • I can't breathe.

  • S T U N N I N G !!!!!

  • Oh! Wonderful rendition... so moving this song and by this group.... wow!

  • Gossebumps GUH-LORE

  • Best chorus EVER!!!

  • 1:46 - and onward makes my heart melt ! His falsetto sent chills down my spine ! LOOOOVVEEE IT !

  • This arrangement was perfect until James Erb came along and ruined it. Erb is a mindless hack compared to Barty, who is the best arranger for men's voices I've ever come across. His use of counterpoint in tight register is sterling, and he knows how to write for groups that are far less accomplished than Chanticleer, which is no mean feat. "Shenandoah" is probably his best work, but check out his arrangement of "Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes" for another example.

  • @TheRealmsOfGold - I don't think that's completely fair. How do you know it was Erb who ruined it? His own arrangement isn't my idea of perfection (neither is this one), but I wouldn't say it's bad by any stretch of the imagination. Barty's arrangements have yet to 'wow' me, although I've never heard his arrangement of Shenandoah without Erb. Plus, I think it's quite a stretch to call this one 'ruined,' whether it's your cup of tea or not. ;)

  • @strongbadian4747: OK, I admit, I'm pretty zealous when it comes to Barty's arrangements :-) He's an alum from my college, so there's a lot of shared choral heritage in our Glee Club. Honestly, though, I think he far outshines Erb, whose music is like that of Dickau: competent and often very pretty, but entirely predictable. Bartholomew, on the other hand, could draw intense vivacity and brilliance from the TTBB ensemble, due to his sterling skill at counterpoint and sense of timbre... (cont'd.)

  • ...and as a result, his arrangements are among the best choral music I've encountered, period. It really stands out.

I just conducted the unaltered Shenandoah with the University of Texas Men's Chorus. I've been meaning to post it. When I do, I'll send it your way! It's very plain, unpretentious music, and I think it's the best folk song setting I know, excepting Quick's "Loch Lomand" and Douma's "Red River Valley."

    You're right, though, this isn't ruined—I was a little hyperbolic there :-)

  • @TheRealmsOfGold - I figured. :) Erb is predictable, I'll give you that. I would love to hear more of Barty's arranging - is the version of Shenandoah you conducted Barty's unaltered version?

  • Eric Alatorre is my cousin!

  • The counter-tenor is truly impressive! I'm in awe of how well blended these men are together. I've sung solo on Shenandoah in college but, I can assure you, I sounded nothing like that!!!! Brava!

  • oh my god! his mustache is amazing!

  • mr peebles is very good here

  • i sang the same song.. with chanticleer!!

  • Does anyone know the venue for this recording? The acoustics are awesome.

  • @dartagnan926 It looks like the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Concert Hall.

  • the day someone dislikes this clip... that guy should get a bullet in the head. definitely LIKE!

  • as amazing as this video and other videos of chanticleer are on youtube, they do absolutely no justice as to how the group sounds when you hear them live. I saw them this past weekend and it was the most incredible thing i had ever heard. If your watching these videos and like what you hear, you HAVE to go see them live

  • gave me goosebumps

  • Comment removed

  • you guys sound amazing AND the video production quality of this is absoluuuuuutely fantastic

  • this is amazing...your blend amazing...you are like one voice....such a simple song and it sounds like a masterpiece

  • I think my heart grew like five times after hearing this...... wow...

  • Shenandoah - Tochter der Sterne (indianisch) - daughter of the stars.

  • "No description available" is right...

  • ooohhhhh

  • Beautiful, truly just beautiful....

  • Soprano?? That is no soprano. That is a counter-tenor. Brilliant and perfect!

  • I want a mustache like Eric's! He looks like the villain of an old melodrama, so epic! XD

  • I have died and gone to heaven! Such angelic voices!

  • Mesmerizing arrangement -- sung flawlessly, of course.

  • that solo at 3:36 with the guy that is right (our right) to the sopranoe is just chilling. It's the best part of the song.
