As the owner of a WASR 10/63 and a Valmet M76, I would say that over 150-200 yards the AR-15 dominates and under that (practical combat ranges), the AK dominates with a knock down bullet. The AK is by far the better brush gun as the M193 bullet is too easily deflected. Now the real question, a firefight breaks out and you can only grab an M-16 w/ gas impingement (sorry no short stroke piston models) or an AK. How many of you are taking the AK?

I don't get why people says the M16 cannot survive a good slam in the dirt. Of course it can't, but the AK 47 can. Why? The M16 wasn't deigned for that; the AK 47 was. (continuing...) I have an AR, I take it shooting twice every week. I only clean it once a month. It has never jammed on me in the 10 years that I've had it. I use standard ammunition. Also, the US military uses AR's in Iraq. That's certainly a sand environment and they certainly work fine.AK's are great guns as well (I have both), but I'm sure many people don't appreciate bagging on AR's based on rumors.

I dont want to get into a "I would know because" Game but I have carried both in combat situations (in the course of mymiliotary career and prefer the AR. Mags have been a source of problems in the past but that problem is solved. ( I am an instructor, NRA LEcert.)

the 5.56 or .223 round was developed more to injur people in war. the idea behind it being. 1 wounded soldier will take at least 2 outta the fight. 1 dead soldier is only 1 soldier outta the fight. they then realized that the bullet travels so fast that when it hits the energy is still traveling fast at the rear of the bullet causing it to tumble wich causes massive trauma. you can also snipe with an ar or m16 too, you cant with an ak.

@f8talh8red false actually the tumble effect only applies to high body mass individuals which would be one husky solider. also america is one of the only countries who choose to take care of the wounded during the fighting most other countries continue to fight until the dust clears then worries about the damage. sniping with the ar-15 can also be ruled out because the projectile weighs so little at over 300 meters it can easly be blow off target by even a low wind.

However, the 5.56mm round can easily be resisted by protective material(doesn't penetrate well). But then, you can sure as hell carry a shitload more of those rounds.
