@ToddonCapeCod Social Security was designed to set aside a portion of a person's income so it would be immune from market volatility. The program has been very effective as the poverty rate among to elderly has fallen from 33% to 9% in the past 75 years. As for "welfare", could you be more specific as to which programs you have a problem with?

@ToddonCapeCod My point exactly. ER's cannot turn people away, so every time an uninsured person goes to a hospital to receive medical care and cannot afford to pay, YOU and I end up paying for it. Hospitals raise their rates to make up the lost revenue, and in turn insurance companies raise everyone else's premiums. Sometimes, the government will even give $ directly to a hospital which is going bankrupt because they had so many uninsured "walk-ins", as what happened here in Atlanta in 2008.

The program has been very effective as the poverty rate among to elderly has fallen from 33% to 9% in the past 75 years. As for "welfare", could you be more specific as to which programs you have a problem with?

@ToddonCapeCod My point exactly. ER's cannot turn people away, so every time an uninsured person goes to a hospital to receive medical care and cannot afford to pay, YOU and I end up paying for it. Hospitals raise their rates to make up the lost revenue, and in turn insurance companies raise everyone else's premiums. Sometimes, the government will even give $ directly to a hospital which is going bankrupt because they had so many uninsured "walk-ins", as what happened here in Atlanta in 2008.
