Please help me! I've got a usb stick, formatted it to FAT-32, and now my PS3 recognizes it for movies and music etc. but when I try to copy my saved data to it, it just doesn't show up in the screen where to copy the data to. Does anyone have a solution for this problem? I have got the newest 4.0 firmware on my PS3. Please help!
The external hard drive has to be formatted in FAT32. Programs like Swissknife can do this for you and Swissknife is free on download.com.
You can also do it through the elevated Command Prompt on Windows.
There is a limit of 4GB for each file on it.
When you plug it into the PS3, you have to press triangle and select "Display All" otherwise it won't show anything that is on your external hard drive disc.
@salstavern so im assuming this means.can watch movies from the drive? And by anychance do you know up to what size the ps3 will reconize? Id love to add a 1 terabyte drive
@mrbloopisagod It will recognize file sizes up to 4GB. You CAN watch movies from the drive as long as they're in the proper format (I have DVDFab which is a pay program that converts my videos to the PS3 format and other formats if I want), and can crunch them down inside 4GB in the process.
Your drive must also be formatted in FAT32.
PM me if you want instructions on how to do this. I'll also direct you to the software I use for converting my home movies.
@mrbloopisagod If you want file sizes over 4GB, leave your drive formatted in NTFS and download PS3 Media Server which is a freeware that transcodes/streams your videos to the PS3. It's a nice program especially if you don't want to spend the time and money on a program that will shift your home videos into PS3 format. The only trouble is that if you don't have a good internet connection, it lags badly especially on HD stuff. It did with videos I took with my iPod touch.
and then in that situation, you can see where getting a program to shift the format of the videos, and why formatting your drive to FAT32 to plug directly to the PS3 becomes the better option. No lag. You also don't have to keep your computer running/streaming while you're watching movies this way since you can watch directly from your hard drive disc.
Thanks man, to convert from NFTS to FAT32 is something you can´t do in promt or anyway. But thanks for the software, that helped me, it was easy and virus free, subbed, liked and commented :)
Thanks anyways man think i'll have to redownload them again . They should make it easier for us :( Dayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyum i been Collecting these since years Dayyum ahem . am going now cya
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Why The Command prompt Formatted My other Hard Drive ? i typed G but it still Formatted my F hard Drive and i lost everything i've been Transfering To my F drive since Damned 5 hours :'( Where are the files ? Gone ?
I wanted to Format my Hard Drive to Fat32 but i heard it is an old technology and whenever i go to Format hard drive it is not there anymore on SP2 hummm that sucks and i was thinking microsoft purpously made this new NTFS format so that it doesn't support ps3 XD f**ersssssssssssssssssssssssss -_____-
This Video is much of a help and i have the same problem you have and i'm here since almost like 5 hours trying to figure this out ... :D thanks for your video please youtube keep this video forever
would a western digital external hard drive with a usb 3.0 and 2.0 combo work on my ps3 after formatting it to fat32 or do i have to buy one with only a usb 2.0 for it to work on my ps3?
I had this same problem. Sony really need to support exFAT on the ps3, FAT32 is fast becoming out dated. exFAT is better all round. I'd love to know why sony still hav'int decided to support it on the ps3. The only reason i can think is Microsoft wont give them the licence to it or something like that.
But one thing's for sure, sony need to get it sorted or they'll get left behind.
@SalsTavern yup sorry i was posting about 2:10 xD i should get one because my 80gig model started to mess up thinks on its own hard drive a backup save would be nice :D
@SalsTavern i mean, they already think about the next generation of consoles... so... it possibly could be a worthless purchase. But on the other hand, so much good games out there... GoW, Uncharted, HR... MK9 is coming also...
It worked, Thanks for sharing your video! :)

@epskie28 No, I didn't. There is no solution. Most games have protected saves, so you can't copy them.

Nice Sal. I had the same problem with a seagate drive I had. Found out about the FAT32 issue and thought damn that's lame. Anyway, nice solution.

Nice.
Sal, is it worth buying a ps3 now? Its going for five years already, so im not really sure how wise it is to spend money on it in 2011.

@Myasorez i think the price will remain the same, Sony will just increase hard drive space
