There are console commands for you to force team change. As long as sv_cheats was on anyone could do it.

cheat? hmm, i remember playing campaign (not versus) with sv_cheats 1 and kept swapping between infected and survivors using a command (can't remember right now) and when i swapped to survivors, there were suddenly 5 survivors (1 francis bot and me as francis)
