  • Apart from the fact that he skips over a considerable amount of musical directions printed in the score (and I hate it when performers veer too far away from the original printings), it's a fantastic performance, and Gendron is truly a legend of cello playing!

  • Great memories with this video and this sonata!

  • Increible, me hace crecer con el violoncello cada día más esta obra.!!!

  • looks like someone missed the 'Like' button just a bit...

  • This music reminds me how love works. It is extremely beautiful but so deeply stormy.

  • Unlike his other late works, this particular movement has a stronger sense of structure. It's a bit more musical, and for me it's the perfect balance...

  • When I close my eyes and listen to this first movement, I find my mind guiding me through more beautiful worlds than this one in an alternate reality...

No, I am not high, though that does increase the effect.

  • amazing!! only a franch man could play it so well

  • This and the Firebird are what I would choose to have music in the 20th century remembered by, if pressed.

  • never have I cried so hard in my life as I did after hearing this. thank God for music.

  • thank you so much for uploading this.

  • This was the first recording I heard of this piece. I think thats why its my favorite.

  • @RyanFromUltrasound Same here.

  • Debussy is truly one of the greatest composers. Yes, it is a great loss that Debussy did not live to write the other three sonatas he had planned. An amazing performance of an amazing piece of music.

  • I can imagine my future if I played the cello. Long evenings with the sunset pouring through my windows and the sweet sounds of music filling the silence.

  • great record !!

  • If I could give an extra decade of life to any composer it would be Debussy. What I wouldn't give for him to have been able to complete the three other sonatas he planned to write. Sigh.

  • @auerstadt06

I could not agree more. "Sigh" says it all. The three sonatas Debussy did complete were his parting gifts to humanity.

  • I love this piece, especially Maurice playing it.

  • Just GREAT!!!

I'm in love with this piece and musicians!

    Incredible job!

  • I only heard the first minute and a half on a Denon sample CD and it's haunted me ever since to hear the whole thing. So much variety in one piece!! Beautifully done ... although I admit that the beginning is my favorite :)

  • great version

  • wait whats the official title of this again? and the player in this vid is Maurice Gendron Violoncello?

  • The official title of this piece is "Sonate für Violoncello ünd klavier I: Prologue"... The player is Maurice Gendron, who plays the Violoncello, which is an abbreviation of the "Cello", the best instrument in the world (IMO), and also Klavier means piano, or other keyboard instrument, it originally referred to harpsichord/clavichord (i.e. the ill-tempered clavier)...

  • thanks bud ive been trying to look for this piece but i keep getting the wrong ones

  • made me want to become a cellist.
