To the left of the screen, it seems that there is a town in the Middle East. This explains why in the game manual it refers to Phoenicia, located in Lebanon and parts of Syria and Palestine

@WorldChallenge Where did you hear about this!!! I checked ninntendo's website and their was no information that the game will be on the 3DS. Unless they plan on releasing it sometime next year.

It was packaged with the GameGear, like Nintendo packaged Tetris with the GameBoy.

I remember playing this version of Columns at a Wards store back then, at least until the store from my place closed down.
