What you said is wrong. The ball starts where the face points & not in the direction of momentum. Draws & fades work the same way as loft works, the ball starts where the loft points. If you hit down on a ball the ball does not go down into the ground because of the downward momentum it goes where the loft points. Same thing happens with fades & draws the ball starts where the face points.
Hey pal, you are totally wrong, this is not the way to hit a fade and a draw...this is one sure way of messing up a swing which will take yonks to put right...why do guys spend such much time putting shots on to your handicap with such crap!...from an 8 handicap UK golfer!
The ball starts where the club face is aiming; physics 101!!!!!!! It is clearer when you putt (because of the grass there is no side spin) regardless the club path the ball will start and end where the putter's face is looking. Enough with this myth!!!
I like this idea, but I have a question, when closing or opening wouldn't distance be affected, like when you closed the club face the loft went down...
I have a had a lot of trouble hitting the ball straight of the tee, switching from a slice to a fade, despite having little trouble with my irons normally. A friend of mine recommended that I learn to draw and fade of the tee, and forget about trying to hit straight. I tried a few different techniques on the range. This technique was the best for me. I've played 36 holes since, and have been almost perfect off the tee!! Pick a line, and set-up for a draw or a fade! I have taken ten strokes off!
This works well for me when hitting a fade, I actually just used it yesterday hitting a 3 iron to get away from some trees and onto the green. But I always just hit the ball straight or hit a slight draw when trying to draw it with this method.
why dont all the head pro teach all there student why the ball curve difrently when the club impact the ball, before they start to teach them the swing
@MrAsiangolf well i believe golf is a very interesting game because theres just not one way to do unlike cathing a ball or throwing it, id say there are four majojr shot in golf, draw, right to left, and the hook majorly right to left and usually goes lower, then fade, left to right, and slice majorly left to right. Now shots can also have different ball paths in terms of how high the ball goes. This is determined by where the ball is placed in the stance, low farther back in the stance, ect.
@MrAsiangolf now with a draw if you hit near the heel of the club (nearest to the shaft) the ball will go higher but maybe not as far oppisite with the fade, hit of the toe (farthest from the shaft the ball with go higher. good luck figuring it out. ; )
that would work, except you cant turn the club facing the target, cause when I try that the ball fades WAY TOO MUCH, hitting the object Im trying to go around, and thats aiming way to left of object in the way.... how far to left to aim for a fade shot , getting around a target, and the degree one opens the club face, is like geometry and I dont know that either....lol, BUT with the 3 wood Im doing better, just hitting a draw, closed face is harder....
When you give this instruction you should also include. when playing a fade open your stance, play the ball further forward in your stance and take 1 or two clubs extra...and focus on swinging more outside / in To hit a draw or hook take 1 or two less clubs because the ball will run out more, play the ball back further in your stance, close your stance and focus on swinging more inside / out.
what you're describing is a different method altogether. there are 2 basic methods; one which I describe and the other which you are referring to. Watch Jack Nicklaus "Golf My Way" and you'll see where I got my information.
I tried this several times, and I must be doing something wrong. When I tried to draw, all I got were low worm burners that went around 50 yards. the fade was even worse. the open clubface sent the ball almost horizontally to my left. (i golf leftie) I'd like to see this broken down on the actual course so that I can see what I'm doing or not doing.
@djtblizzle to do this the right way you have to swing the club in a straight path back to the ball. bad news that the swing path 99percent golfer dont have or cant not do
@djtblizzle The reason the ball goes left is because the face has more of an influence over the initial starting direction than the path. You are not doing it wrong, the information is a bit misleading. Just remember: Aim the FACE where you want the ball to start and let your path help curve the ball. The ball usually curves away from the direction of the path (if off plane).
By opening the club face you also increase the loft. Oposite for closing the club face you decrease loft. You would have the make sure you pick 1 or 2 club sizes above or below depending.
i'm still pretty much a beginner and am still working on trying to hit it straight, but isn't this more like hitting a hook/slice rather than draw/fade? i have yet to try it, but i was just curious
This video is only relevant if you are swinging it neutral in the first place- this simplifies it too much.....but maybe a better way than lagging your hands or lagging your body!! wat the hell does that mean? Some pros make it too easy but not efeective and some complicate the hell out of it. You need to understand your own swing and then to learn to draw or fade the ball consistenly requires some hard work and dedication, like most things in golf
For those of you saying this is the wrong way to hit the draw/fade....need to realize, he isn't trying to say/convince you that this is the RIGHT way, but just A WAY....
I've been playing golf for 1 month, (completely addicted) and I just taught myself how to draw and fade today at the range. To draw, I let my hands release more, to fade, I don't let my hands release as much. It works 100% of the time. Now I just have to learn to make it more subtle :).
wow, if you can really do that you're a genius, but from experience if you approach the fade shot or draw with the wrong technique. you might get the wrong fundamentals and your swing might get worse and you'll have a slice that you cant fix, so be careful and approach it correctly
As you've already found out, there is more than 1 way to work the golf ball. I like the way Jack Nicklaus teaches it because he emphasizes using one basic swing for every club and every shot whether you want to fade or draw the ball and you apply spin to the ball by opening or closing the clubface at address and regripping the club in your normal fashion. It takes the thought process out of it because you don't have to concentrate on doing something different like creating more or less lag.
@deimosh I've never heard of using lag to draw or fade. Maybe you're using "lag" in a different way than I'm used to. There are several ways to work the ball and this one will work; also, it's hard to argue with the best player in history--Nicklaus.
There's more than one technique to hit a draw. This method lets peope use their regular swing which is easier than trying to remember how to change your swing for this type of shot. It's also the way that Jack Nicklaus teaches it. See his video "Golf My Way."
That's another method that works. I can control the amount of draw/fade more accurately using the methods in this video than changing my swing and swinging out to in or in to out and delaying release with a fade or releasing early during a draw.
Yeah I think your method would definitely produce more accurate targeting for most people. I just find that changing my swing is the easiest for me personally, and it's more fun. :) Good video though, really makes it clear for those who don't already understand it.
How much in and out swing do you use to hit a 5 yard draw vs. a 10 or even 20 yard draw? The great thing about the method in this video is that you can control that so for example if a pin is placed on the left side of the green, you can control how much draw you apply to get the ball to turn toward the pin while keeping it on the green.
If Trackman had gathered different data, they would not hesitate a split second to publish it. Their business to measure and improve on the gathered data.
You suggest they do not out of deference to teaching pros, including Nicklaus himself who endorses this simple effective method.
Nicklaus does not endorse ideas or products that do not meet his high standard.
I've used Jack's method and it works just fine, thank you.
Contradicting data would be out there. I've not seen it.
This technique is taught by Jack Nicklaus in his video "golf my way." There are many other pga pros who also teach this technique. This isn't my personal idea.
trackman, the most accurate ball tracking system used on the pga tour, has had this data for years. that the ball will start where the face is lookin at impact, not where the path is aimed. they wont publish it as many pros, like the ones you mention teachin it the other way
I'm sure Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods would appreciate knowing that since they're apparently doing it incorrectly. Maybe they'll score better as a result. While your at it, ask your physics professor to validate your theory.
nicklaus aimed more left or right, or swung more to the left or right to get his draw or fade. tiger may say he does on his demonstrations, but trust me, he doesnt. if he wants a fade he holds the face open. if he wanrs a draw he turns it over. Trackman is the radar used by the PGA and Euro tour. why?? bcos its the most accurate. it says that the ball will start where the face is aimed. im not sayin ur technique cant work it can. but it needs alterations
Watch this video on my golf instruction blog agamegolfinstructiondotcom slash golfinstructionblog slash hooking-around-trouble-steven-bann/
and tell me why the golf ball goes around the tree and doesn't fly into the tree, even though the clubface is pointing directly at the tree. Based on what you're saying the golf ball should hit the tree because the clubface is pointing at it but it doesn't. Why not?
i have seen that vid from steve bann. if u watch closly you c that the club is actually aimed to the right or left of the tree. and even if it was aimed at the tree at ADDRESS, doesnt mean it is at IMPACT. where the face aims at address means little
By adjusting the angle of the club face, a fade adds loft to the club and a draw takes loft away. For example, if you're 165yds out and typically hit the 8 iron, you may want to hit a 7 iron fade. Stick with the 8 iron for a big draw though because the closed clubface and decreased loft will automatically compensate for the added distance of the curved ball flight.
This principle applies for every single golf club. The one thing ro remember is that the clubs with the least loft apply the most sidespin while the most lofted clubs apply the least sidespin. For instance, you can't fade a club with more loft than about a 7 or 8 iron because when you open the clubface, it has too much loft and no sidespin. A driver is the easiest to fade or draw because it has the least loft. That's why people tell you to tee off with a 3 wood if you can't hit straight.
Excellent tip!. I used to draw the ball and even would get compliments on doing that. But I had no clue why I was doing it. Now I know, I must have closed the club face. Cool stuff. I will try to knowingly execute this! Thanks!
What this dude has said is ABSULUTLEY corect. It is straight out of Jack Nickaus's "golf My Way" It've very sold golf fundamentals and their is no disagreeing about it. One point though, if you fade it, add a club because of the distance lost - If you draw it, lessen one club as you will get extra yardage from turning it over. Good video.
Wouldn't work very well would it. You have to have enough loft remaining on a draw to get the ball off the ground and enough vertical clubface remaining on a fade to apply sidespin. The more vertical the clubface, the more sidespin applied (example = driver). The less vertical the clubface, the less sidespin applied (example = open sandwedge which becomes completely horizontal if you open it enough (great for lob shot but not for a fade))
I have been golfing for around 3 years now. This is the exact swing I use to draw or fade my shot. It works great, but remember not everyone is the same.
Thats the great thing about golf. You can swing as differently as Tiger Woods or Jim Furyk and still score well. The trick is to find golf tips and instruction that work for you. I prefer this method of controlling the ball because I don't have to change any other aspect of my swing except the angle of the clubface which means my chances of a successfully executed shot are higher.
This is exactly true. Golfers should remember this for sure. It's classic Nicklaus. If you rent Golf My Way, Nicklaus' instructional video, this is exactly what he says. It is the most simplest method because you don't have to change your swing or "roll" your hand over for a draw etc...Nice presentation
I still have a VHS copy my father gave me in 1984, and I must say AGameGolf does a better job of explaining the concept on youtube than the old video did!
simple, but if you either open or close the club face like that, you're either gaining or losing loft, resulting in a change in your distance. Chose whatever method is gonna help take strokes off your score, but I prefer to either open or close my stance a bit. Achives the same result, but doesn't change the loft on the ball. Try it
True - I explain that in video #2 of this series which goes into more detail about the consequences of opening and closing the clubface and the impact on distance. I've found much more consistency in my results by always swinging the exact same way and the only thing I change is the angle of the clubface. Anytime you change your stance, you also change your swing plane and use your muscles differently which adds to inconsistency.
It takes some practice to know your results, but if I were hitting an open clubface 5 iron, depending on the additional loft added, I'd compensate by hitting a 4 or 3 iron with an open clubface approximating the loft of the 5 iron if I wanted the same trajectory.
It's easy if you log on sdfgolf dot com and see how the helicopter golf training aid can help you to understand and learn how to do it, and allows you to refresh your muscle memory properly.

Well i just learned the fade and the draw by my pro.
For a draw(right to left), you simply have to use your arms more, and create some lag into your body.
For the fade just the opposite, use your body more and lag in your hands.
This works perfect here, and its more effective then your way, i think.
But ill try it out :)

I prefer this method of controlling the ball because I don't have to change any other aspect of my swing except the angle of the clubface which means my chances of a successfully executed shot are higher.

your videos are VERY helpful. You truly are a huge help. Thanks for posting all of your videos

Good comment. I'll try both.

sounds easy enough!

It's easy if you log on sdfgolf dot com and see how the helicopter golf training aid can help you to understand and learn how to do it, and allows you to refresh your muscle memory properly.
