In some traditional catch wrestling bouts, rolling onto your back signalled your defeat and was the equivalent of a tapout in jiu jitsu or a pinfall in wrestling. Any MMA fighter can defend himself in a street fight. You really think they don't know how to pull hair, strike to the eyes and groin. They will run circles around anyone in the street. I also feel boxers can street fight and so can wrestlers. They are used to contact and have better endurance.

@martialartguyxxx i started grappling 14 years ago informally with wrestlers and judoka when id only seen renzos tapes,ive been formally training bjj and mma 5 years now after a long break.I really rate most of the gracies but royce was considered a weak grappler in brazil at the time and rorian is a complete liar and dictator,he lost every talented grappler the academy ever had due to his attitude.There were sevral lads ready for black belt in the early 90s but left him.

they did, royce won ufc 1,2 and 4... they don't do it any more because they only focus on one martial art (GJJ) and back then in the ufc it would be mixed martial arts meaning many martial arts showed against eachother. Now it means you are a martial artist with skills in several arts (example, muy thai, BJJ, wrestling) or boxing, greko roman wrestling, sambo or any combo of ground fighting, stand up and the inbetween (take downs/throws)

Roles Gracie was just signed to the UFC..he will be more than likely fighting at UFC 107.. He is currently Undefetaed in MMA. The Fertita's(the owners of the UFC) are in talks of bringing Renzo Gracie in the UFC to fight Matt Hughes

You need to research a martial art timeline. The Gracie's learned from Jigori Kano, the founder of Judo. They then made it their own by calling it Brazilian Jujitsu. Never giving kano his credit and changing it by adding terrible strikes and kicks.

Renzo is in talk of fighting in the UFC...against Matt Hughes.. UFC just signed Rolles Gracie, who is son of the legendary Rolls Gracie.. Rolles is undefeated in MMA so far and has a similar game to Roger Gracie...

Don't forget that the Gracies' primary goal is to teach. The original reason all the Gracies fought in the UFC/Pride in the first place just to show that Jiu-Jitsu works! Now that they've accomplished that, they can go focus again on this primary goal. The last time I checked, Ryron and Rener love the teaching side of JJ and want to continue that. I think Ralek is more interested in the competitive side. Best of luck to both of them +)

@phillythekidsdfd ya, I agree, even back to an mma setting, everyone starts with one art. BJ penn, bjj, sakuraba, catch wrestling, anderson silva, muay thai and bjj, brock lesnar, wrestling. Nobody is as successful as the people who were purists, who later incorporated other styles, in mma. Bjj will always be the best martial art for self defense ( with a little judo) since it is easier to grapple and dominate someone than to dominate a bully with striking... these "MMA" schools are for sport.

I came up pretty rough, from Bed-Stuy Brooklyn where walking when its dark meant an automatic confrontation on a daily basis by local street thugs who were just hanging out or on the basketball courts. Also in a place we call 'The Hole' in Jersey. We call it, The Hole' because the people who live there seem to get stuck in their lives of living street.
