I degrades the belt when you have a non wrestler win the most coveted title of the brand. That is like giving the WWE Heavyweight championship to Richard Simmons. You just don't do stupid shit like that.
Plus with piss poor booking, the fingerpoke of doom, telling people Mankind won the WWE title among other stupid decisions made my Russo and Bischoff caused WCW's failure.
@xSOILBORNx No dude you are wrong. I have watched wrestling 30+ years and know it all. WCW died in 1997 when the AOL / Time Warner merger happened, almost 4 years BEFORE Arquette won the title. It is documented that AOL did not like pro wrestling period and did not want it on their network. It was announced the doors would be shutting in 2001 back in '97 which was during their highest period (NWO era). No matter what happened after '97 they were still closing up shop.
@xSOILBORNx What? Where is the info on this? Seems pretty interesting but with how well business was going in WCW in 97, probably WCWs best year ever, I would doubt they would decide to shut down something that was making them a lot of money. Or give them another hour on TV to make Nitro 3 hours long. That just doesn't make sense. Or give them another show for Thursdays.
It's a bit hard to hear what DDP is saying afterwards... he is saying: "Really David... you just won the World Title? The title I walked into the match with? That's freaking hilarious! I will make less money now and likely be bumped from the main event, but that don't matter to me. Let's celebrate!"
@TheMph019 Jarrett never should never have been anywhere near the main event scene to begin with. He couldn't draw shit and before returning to WCW he lost to Chyna and thus killing any credibility he ever had.
@TheWaukeshaSquirrel - couldn't agree more, but at least the other guys were in WCW. Arquette was a B-list movie actor, and as I said I don't even blame Arquette because it was basically forced on him. But this was the final nail in WCW's coffin that rendered it pathetic.
At least Arquette could hold the belt correctly. It irks the fuck out of me when wrestlers hold belts upside down.
But no, he's not the worst champion ever. He donated all the money WCW gave him to the families of Owen Hart and Brian Pillman and only agreed to being champ because Russo insisted. Russo's title reign was much worse.
@TheWaukeshaSquirrel I know what you mean...DDP champion on one channel and on the other...Stone Cold Steve Austin...
DDP blows Jarrett out of the friggin' water in all departments but other than that I'm having a real hard time thinking of a comeback...by the time they got round to giving DDP the title it was too little too late - a gamble that didn't pay off. But I think had he not won the world title people would forever be asking why he wasn't given a chance...
@TheWaukeshaSquirrel DDP was a legit main eventer and if he had started wrestling 10 years earlier he may have been the greatest ever. The fact is he debuted when he was 35 years old and within 4 years had become world champ - watch his feud with nWo, his match with Goldberg, his promos and his shoot interview before calling him a glorified midcarder...
@xandermercury - To be fair to Arquette, the Scream movies are probably what he will most be remembered for, followed by this WCW Title win. But I honestly can't name anything else memorable he's done in the entertainment world.
if some celebrity had to win this they should have made some famous celebrity win this, like some action hero, cmon david arquette hes still not famous.
Okay its pretty bad he won the title, but it cant be as worse as Vince Mcmahon winning the wwf championship. You never have a owner hold the title. Plus at least david arquette didnt want the title while, or acted like it. While Vince was shoving it in everyones face When he had it ;D
@JMcauley211 O.k: you have to consider that Arquette won by pinning Eric Bishoff and that 3 month later Vince Russo became world champion. You also have to consider that this was a tag team title match for the "individual" world championship (WT?).
You also have to consider that Vince McMahon is slightly more muscular than Arquette and did win due to Stone Cold ruling out his problem with HHH (one H is hated)... And they were more sentimental stuff around this scenario that with Arquette.
For those that don't know: David Arquette REPEATEDLY asked for WCW/Russo not to go through with this title change. @DrSanto91 I don't see what the big deal was. It was done in a way that made it look like an utter fluke. If he'd beaten a wrestler, then I'd think it was BS, but he beat Bischoff with a ton of help from DDP during the match.
I'd have preferred this not to have been a main event, but it was what it was.

God bless David Arquette though; he was a lifelong wrestling fan, and donated all the money he earned working for WCW to injured wrestlers and their families.
They were thinking of getting him to host a few weeks back I dk what happened to the idea but if a host DID win the belt it would be like this the beggining of the end.
The end of the attitude era and Vince pushing Cena as the top face were both the beginning of the end. WWE is so far gone at this point nothing will bring it back.
The Rock would still have some value but I don't think it would be the same - the Rock is 37 which these days is old in the business, I mean most people are sick of Triple H at this point and he's one of the greats in the business, and does anyone give a damn about Sting in TNA? My point is stars from the past had their time but things change. The end of the attitude era was the end of WWE being entertaining and relevant.
Sometimes I have the weird feeling the Vince Russo was sent by McMahon to work for WCW and screw it this way. In an order to destroy WCW. Is it a conspiracy, or could this actually have happened. All I know every other wrestling company should stay as far away from russo as possible.
A friend of mine gave me a similar thought too, the only reason some of Vince Russo's storylines worked in the WWF/WWE was because McMahon had the final say on Russo's ideas, McMahon was like an editor, plus the fact that it set them apart from the more wrestling-oriented shows from ECW and WCW for having more talk segments while still having great wrestling action. Once Russo took his bullshit over to WCW and tried the same thing, it turned the fans off and they left, and you can't blame them.
Yep WCW title meant that night the wcw title legacy is forever tarnished by the moment for is sense of history. People like sting, Dusty Rhodes, and Ric Flair bust their ass to get it. Why booking a hollywood C actor who not a wrestler instead of a talent that worked hard everynight?!!!! 0_o
This match pissed me off. Hell, it would have been more exciting to see a female wrestler win the World Heavyweight Championship instead of David Arquette. When will a female become a heavyweight champion?

They were thinking of getting him to host a few weeks back I dk what happened to the idea but if a host DID win the belt it would be like this the beggining of the end.

The end of the attitude era and Vince pushing Cena as the top face were both the beginning of the end. WWE is so far gone at this point nothing will bring it back.

well you got a point

@Jeff051176 The Rock...?
jagenigma 2 years ago
The Rock would still have some value but I don't think it would be the same - the Rock is 37 which these days is old in the business, I mean most people are sick of Triple H at this point and he's one of the greats in the business, and does anyone give a damn about Sting in TNA? My point is stars from the past had their time but things change. The end of the attitude era was the end of WWE being entertaining and relevant.

I will still admit, that this is ten times better than cena holding the belt. Plus let's not mention the atrocity of a belt he's created.

And this still isn't as bad as Hornswaggle constantly beating Chavo every week....

Why is Chavo the greatest wrestler ever? Meh typical stupid WWE hater.

This match pissed me off. Hell, it would have been more exciting to see a female wrestler win the World Heavyweight Championship instead of David Arquette. When will a female become a heavyweight champion?
