There's a big difference in killings carried out by state forces (British army) and those carried out by paramilitary organisations (IRA, UVF) etc. One is bound by the conventions of international law and the others are not. The British state carried out crimes against civillians of this country, the queen is the figurehead of the British state so you can understand why there were protests. The dissidents are despised by all communites (for the most part) and they will not succeed in their aims.The only way now is peace and negotiations.There is now approx 16% of people in Northern Ireland who are in favour of a United Ireland (some of that has got to do with the South's disastrous economy) so we have to respect the majority and move on.

@1984ioc You are underestimating the british media. British people have a mixture of opinions on the issue. There are alot of british people who sympathised with the IRA. I often argued with friends who sympathised with them. The right-wing press would be more anti-republican and the left-wing more pro-irish nationalist. Almost all the films made about the troubles are from a nationalist perspective. People in britain are exposed to a range of views on the issue and have a range of views.

Well exactly. There's a big difference, the IRA/UVF and all those other paramilitaries were not state armies, they didn't have any rules or conventions to abide by. They were a law unto themselves. The British army had certain duties they had to uphold and were left wanting on many occassions. Not saying the whole army was in on it, or that every soldier was bad. But there was still a lot of stuff perpetrated on their behalf that needs to be looked at.

The dissidents are despised by all communites (for the most part) and they will not succeed in their aims.The only way now is peace and negotiations.There is now approx 16% of people in Northern Ireland who are in favour of a United Ireland (some of that has got to do with the South's disastrous economy) so we have to respect the majority and move on.

@1984ioc You are underestimating the british media. British people have a mixture of opinions on the issue. There are alot of british people who sympathised with the IRA. I often argued with friends who sympathised with them. The right-wing press would be more anti-republican and the left-wing more pro-irish nationalist. Almost all the films made about the troubles are from a nationalist perspective. People in britain are exposed to a range of views on the issue and have a range of views.

Well exactly. There's a big difference, the IRA/UVF and all those other paramilitaries were not state armies, they didn't have any rules or conventions to abide by. They were a law unto themselves. The British army had certain duties they had to uphold and were left wanting on many occassions. Not saying the whole army was in on it, or that every soldier was bad. But there was still a lot of stuff perpetrated on their behalf that needs to be looked at.
