Hearing American opera singer Jessye Norman, who isn't even French, singing so passionately to the people of France, it was so moving. President George Bush Sr and Barbara Bush were there too...everyone was deeply moved..

It's a honor to her wonderful singing voice that for France's 200 year anniversity that out of all the French singers around, that they ask an America to drape herself in thier flag and sing their national song. This is when I first here of Jessye Norman and I grown to respect her singing and consider her one of America's greatest living singers!!
I watched this in Hong Kong in July, 1989 before the territory was returned to China, and after the June 4th incident in Beijing. I choke every time these memories come to mind.

I remember the hurdy-gurdies and the Senegalese drummers going on for what seemed like half-an-hour, this incredible hypnotic sound, and the TV commentators saying every few minutes, "Jessye Norman's next". An American singer (singing (beautifully) another country's national anthem...unimaginatively filmed, one can only lament the fact that the Froggies couldn't get it together with one of their own.
I actually remember watching her perform this piece on tv in 1989. I literally was moved to tears by her performance. Some of you may remember that the elder Bush and Mrs. Bush were present at the performance. As the camera showed Mrs. Bush, she was wiping a tear(s) from her eyes as Jessye sang. That was almost 20 years ago and I still remember how moving her performance was.

I stayed up late into the morning to watch this live in the States. One of the most unforgettable performances I have seen. The huge crowds. Jessye Norman clothed in the billowing Tricolor with the Arc d'Triomphe in the background! Thank you for posting this gem.

La Revolución Francesa es el simbolismo del inicio de la democracia en todo el mundo, por eso pienso que hicieron bien en seleccionar a Jessye Norman, que dicho sea de paso era una de las mejores cantantes de la época. El que no sea francesa y el que no sea blanca, la raza predominante en Francia, le da un mayor simbolismo

I watched this in Hong Kong in July, 1989 before the territory was returned to China, and after the June 4th incident in Beijing. I choke every time these memories come to mind.

Me too. I remember the hurdy-gurdies and the Senegalese drummers going on for what seemed like half-an-hour, this incredible hypnotic sound, and the TV commentators saying every few minutes, "Jessye Norman's next". Amazing build up of excitement. And then Jessye!!!!!!!! A thousand thanks for posting this.

I actually remember watching her perform this piece on tv in 1989. I literally was moved to tears by her performance. Some of you may remember that the elder Bush and Mrs. Bush were present at the performance. As the camera showed Mrs. Bush, she was wiping a tear(s) from her eyes as Jessye sang. That was almost 20 years ago and I still remember how moving her performance was.
