  • Wow, I was 4 months old during this visit.

  • I loveed ride and got to go on the first time I went to Disneyworld which was in 98

  • What a shame that Horizons no longer exits. I never had opportunity of take that ride. When I was to EPCOT in Spring 1995, Horizons was close by repairs, and when I returned on 2009, Horizons had been replacet by Mission: Space.

  • Great to see a clear video of that ride. Sad that i've only heard of it from the Simpsons...

  • I LOVE This Video ! 1984?! CRaZY !!All The Great Memorabe Rides Are Almost Gone...This One-"Horizons" Being My Favorite EVER ! World Of Motion-Gone...Walter Cronkite's Version Spaceship Earth-Gone...And Dream Flight At Magic Kingdom As Well As The Sky Ride And Nemo-Gone...TG We Have ALL These Videos To Look At And Remember Better Days..."If We Can Dream It, We Can Do It"

  • Thank YOU!

  • I loved this ride so much. Thank you for the video and for uploading this. I used to love the part were you could smell the oranges. This brings back so many memories. I miss this ride very much.

  • Oh man, i never got to ride this. It was closed by the time i even knew horizons was even at epcot. Thanks for puting this up i heard it was a great ride. Mission Space is just crappy but it is fun a little tho messing around with buttons on the inside of the cockpit for mission space

  • I vaguely remember riding this as a kid back in the eighties. I have not been back since but I'm planning a trip this year. I am excited yet apprehensive about visiting Epcot again efter all these years.

  • really missed this ride, I do appreciate the idea Epcot tried to maintain the retros 80s like they did but they shouldve kept this ride.

  • @quak3rjim2k7 Apparently they pretty much had to replace it. There was something wrong with the ground it was built on. It might have been a sink hole, I'm not sure. But I believe it would have cost almost as much to save it than it would to just build a new ride.

  • yes this was a great ride/diorama.it is sad that it and many others are gone.I have said it in another forum, the generation of imagineers that built Epcot and MK,were the pioneers for the"what could it be like future".They knew what they were doing.Sadly, some of these younger imagineers just don't get it.They think technology is the only way to go.But simple things and rides such as these will always have a special place in our hearts for us now in our 50's and those older.bring back old ways

  • Epcot didn't get a lot right in terms of its future predictions and the time it would take. I think disney is just paranoid now when it comes to attempting a strike at what the future will be now. That and the other person was right. people want roller coasters. These side-scrolling dioramas aren't hip anymore. -Which is sad. It's much more thought-provoking.

  • I so wish they did not rip this one down...I understand people want thrill rides, then go to another park.. Epcot is just not the same anymore... This and World of Motion were the best they had...

  • I've been frustrated/disappointed with the direction Future World has taken. Many of the time line attractions were replaced with bland, boring roller coasters which have *nothing* to do with the future! Being from Southern California, I was appalled when I exited "Test Track". It was nothing more than a typical ride on a So. Cal. freeway! Zzzzz. And don't even get me started on Mission Space which replaced this gem, Horizons. I miss the imagination that marked the original EPCOT attractions!

  • WOW!! I was 2 months old when you shot this video. It really didn't change much until it was replaced by mission space. GREAT VIDEO it reminds me of all the family vacations we took.

  • 4 months before for me, was my favorite ride in the park, growing up

  • I vaguely remember this from when I was a kid. I went to the EPCOT Center with my parents at least twice in the 80s: once around 84 or 85 (the shirt I have from then was pretty small, so I couldn't have been any older than 5), and again in 90 shortly after Universal Studios opened. I think we went to Disney & EPCOT once between then, maybe 87 or 88. I'd like to go to Orlanda again sometime soon, but it seems like a lot has changed from 20 years ago. Anywho, thanks for preserving this on film.

  • Oh the orange smell!! As a child of the '80s I thought it smelled more of Fruit Loops. A smell-memory I'll never forget >>extra-warm-fuzzy<<.

I loved loved loved the Choose Your Own Adventure ending: Water, Land, or Space.

  • so depressed. wish i could have experienced this attraction. :(

  • They recycled "It's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" (0:59) ! It's the theme of Carousel of Progress in Magic Kingdom now instead of "Now is theTime..."

  • My family just came back from WDW a few weeks ago. My mother Skyped me the other day and said, "wow, no wonder Horizons is gone...it's not the future anymore...look at us, talking face to face on our laptops!!"

  • Brings back memories of Epcot! I worked there in the '80's!! Thanks for this video.. It was better back then!!

  • This is what I miss about the old school Disney.... I hate some of this new stuff they are coming out with. I am all about some Walt Disney World and go every year. I would like to see these old classics come back in the future.

  • @TheProduction101 Unfortunately for this one, and for World of Motion, they aren't coming back if the sponsors don't come back, or otherwise ask to bring the original ride back (GE was responsible for Horizons, GM for World of Motion - GM for whatever reason decided to 'update' to 'Test Track'... and I have no idea who's got the Pavilion currently known as Mission: Space right now... I know HP and Sony each sponsored it at one point)

  • holy jesus this is amazing! i need to go back

  • i haven't seen that ride in years and i found on here, that was cool

  • This video was made two months before I was born!

  • Thanks for making me feel old! :)

  • @powerpup97 And a year before me!!!

  • Best EPCOT ride EVER!!! First time I was there I rode it 4 times. RIP

  • the 80s were great. Thanks for sharing - EPCOT looked amazing back then.

  • for the 8 times that i went to WDW when this was there I never rode it now I am pissed lol

  • This was a great ride, they don't make them like this anymore.

  • One of the best at WDW. Pity they had to replace it with MS.

  • I wouldn't say it was the best, anything with a "vision of the future" is really hard to update. Besides MISSION: SPACE is the same concept as Mission To Mars that used to be in Disneyland, expect it has a more realistic and logical approach.

  • I was to little to realize..but the people and some of the music is like carosel of progress

  • Man...when I heard the "Horizons" song when you see the space station, it was hard not to tear up...what a great ride it was.

  • It was an amazing ride experience, but I'm gonna take a leap of faith and say Mission: SPACE was a pretty good replacement...

  • No i hate mission space..it gives me a headache and its boring

  • Brings back so many memories im so sad this ride is gone! but not from my heart x

  • Wow, watching this video almost made me cry. It brought back all those wonderful memories from my childhood. This was my second favorite ride (The Living Seas), but it was still one that I always looked forward to. Different times, happier days. Thanks for the video (and the memories).

  • I wish I could give you 7,000 thumbs up.

  • Thanks!

  • - sniff sniff, cry -

  • awesome video!!! miss this ride so much..thank you!

  • I am so Happy to see this video!!! I was saddened when they got rid of it. Now I can watch this any time!!! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!

  • I never got to experience Horizons myself, but I can tell it was a million times better than Mission: Space. 20th century Epcot was the best. Thanks for the wonderful video!

  • You're welcome. I still can't believe how many people have watched this!

  • maybe they can re do something like this... maybe a mix of Meet the Robinsons and Wall-E ?

  • I would love that!

  • Thanks so much for posting this, this was my favorite ride when I was little, it brought back a lot of memories.

  • this looks really cool. never got to see it but now from watching these videos from the 80s epcot went downhill. they are overdoing the nemo stuff, and they got rid of body wars, horizons, etc i wish i saw the old epcot :(

  • Thanks so much for this video - we didn't go until October 1988 for the first time, our last visit to EPCOT and Florida was in June 2002. We've been to Orlando 9 times altogether.

One of our visits was in December 1995 / January 1996. The strange thing is that we went on Horizons in December 1995 - which was open as usual - and we just assumed it had been open the whole time since our last visit in February 1993. In fact it was closed from October 1993 to December 1995, but we didn't realize!

  • GREAT FOOTAGE!

  • The Narrator Sounds like Hal Smith.

I can see why they called it the sequel to Carousel of Progress.

I think they incorporated a lot of the elements of Horizons into the New Revamped Spaceship Earth.

  • I am so glas izener is gon. Imagine another year epcot would be like 6 flags. izner comes in horizons is gon they loose alot of money the parks cut down they fall apart. I remember whan they were flawless.

  • The ride was barely a year old during your visit! I miss it....

  • Very good job putting together this video!

  • Why do I remember something in Horizons (or EPCOT) where you got to choose your drink. I remember seeing a button for coke, or pepsi, or sprite, I don't know. I'm trying to find out where that memory is from.

  • EPCOT used to have this one "exhibit" where it had like all the types of Coke and other soda's from around the world. Most of them were so nasty!

  • Still exists :)

  • theres a place called club cool where you sample soda from other forein countrys like that. it is in innoventions plaza. Thats still there

  • ohh and picking the little video clip at the end was my favorite to =)

  • I remember horizons when I was real little, horizons was my favorite ride at Epcot. My fovorite part was the peach smell. =)

  • you mean orange smell

  • yeah my bad not peach lol

  • This was my favorite ride. Epcot isn't the same without it....

  • 1:36 big daddy from bioscock

  • thanks ever so much....brought back many memories. big hug.....

  • I miss this ride so much!! Excellent post, this is priceless!!

  • Wait--was Horizons the one that pumped actual orange scent into the room when you went by a miniature orange field?

  • Yes, the orange scent was always a cool effect. I used to look forward to that as a kid.

  • I always get choked up at the part at about 5:15, where you exit the main track and enter the big space room. The music, combined with the fact that the room seemed SO GIGANTIC like the vastness of space, when I was little, is pretty moving.

  • agreed....disney world was amazing growing up and rides like horizons added to the greatness....makes me really fucking miss being in that state of mind

  • BRING BACK HORISONS!!!! What a cool ride of looking into the future. Thaks for the flashback!!!

  • i miss this a lot, it's much better tha mission space! and in horizons there is no dead people -.-

  • In the Mission in Space attraction in Horizons place, all you wait in long line for is nothing but a tiny five-minute motion-simulater in place of a long twenty-minute dark ride. >:(

  • the song at 1:00 - 1:11 is There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow from The Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom. Thats awsome..lol

  • Actually,The music that plays there is the same audio that plays on the radio in the carousel of progress

  • Horizons was always our family's favorite ride at Epcot...I hate that my daughter won't get to experience it! Thank you for this reminder :D

  • rest in peace horizons, epcot will never be the same=/

  • I MISS IT!!!!!!

  • Nice video. Loved Horizons. Sure the costumes were late 70's-early 80's style but the ride itself was ahead of it's time. No need to replace it, just update the thing!

I wonder if a scaled down version of Mission: Space could have been fit in the Magic Kingdom where The Timekeeper used to be (where that daft Monsters Inc. show is now).

  • I REMEMBER THIS!!!!! I love this, and Mission Space sux!! I cooulden't even go on it at all!!!! This was alot better!! I miss the old days.

  • It all started when they took Walter Cronkite off Spaceship Earth and its been downhill ever since.

  • I completely agree! Jeremy Irons ruined Spaceship Earth and they closed down the post ride exhibit!

  • Are you kidding me?! Jeremy Irons was awesome!! Walter Cronkite creeps me out anyways.(not kidding) At least he's a heck of a lot better than Judith Dench!

  • Yeah, Judy Dench just ruins the whole damn thing, along with that stupid screen gimmick at the end.

Jeremy Irons is the greatest narrator the ride has had. Nothing will beat his era of Spaceship Earth, although playing Tomorrow's Child at the end would have made it even better.

  • yea I like Jeremy Irons alot

  • Wrong ride. ;)

  • EPCOT Center was at its peak in the 80s Horizons needs to comeback, so does the World of Motion, i actually liked The Land the way it was CommuniCore has to make its comeback Innoventions is crap

  • Very good job putting together this video! Interesting to hear some of the earlier narration spiels.

  • This video contains some of the original narration. Very interesting.

  • Great video! One of the better ones I have seen of this attraction. Worked as cast member at this attraction, in early, mid nineties. I so miss it. Such fun to work at the unlaod area, and marvel at all the awed expressions people had coming off the ride. Definitely the best scenic ride Disney ever did!

  • Mission:Space blows. It's just a cheap thrill ride with a big budget. This had far more heart and imagination. If only there was a park that was made up of the extinct classics.

    *wipes away a tear*

  • Excellent vid! ^_^

  • Oh how I miss this attraction. It was one of my favorites.

  • How I miss this ride!

    Booooooooh for Mission:Space.

    Thanks for posting it.

  • If only you could have captured the orange smell. Thanks for the memory. I love Mission Space, but you know...

  • Wow, I guess I'm not the only one that remembers the orange smell. That's what I remember most about this ride. Growing up in Florida, I was lucky to go to EPCOT a lot. I just went there three weeks ago with some friends, not the same park I remember as a kid.

  • sooo many memories!
