@Flamorgan Some people don't think about their words before they open their mouths, sadly. My old Nan always said "If you know nowt, say nowt." If only she was still around, she'd give 'em a word or two. :D
England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales aren't countries in their own right. They are just major areas within the UK - which IS a country- THE country, in terms of the formation of the UK topic.
A man on a train randomly spoke to me, perhaps 60 ish, he told me he had spent 40 years in Japan, but was born in England.
What surprised me about the ensuing conversation was his ignorance when he started protesting that 'here' had never been fully conquered like Japan. I mentioned the Danes, France, Romans, etc, and he protested that they never conquered the 'whole country'. Apparently he believes Scotland etc are not separate countries; UK never as a state existed during those times though.
Ultraphonix is right, Great Britain is essentially a collective, we all vote for the same Government so GB is a single Country in all but name. It gets more confusing trying to explain the difference between GB, the UK and the Commonwealth; look it up on Wikipedia.
Everyone outside the UK should watch this, I'm glad to see an English person make a video like this, because it's usually frustrated Scottish(like me), welsh and N.Irish people trying to explain this! Thank you!
wow... you couldent have got it much more wrong, evan know you are English. the only sovrign countrys are Britania and the Irish republic, the scottish stoped beaing a country in the 16th centry i think and the welsh have never been an indepedent country, collectivly they are all known as the united kingdom, with the exception of the Irish repuplic who are see as an independent nation by the UN and EU and if you talking about accents it much much more complicated than that.
@tubewearwolf and im not evan from the UK or US... personaly i think beaing from eaither of these countrys makes you fat dumb and happy with an over inflated sence of self worth, concider your self trolled and have a nice day.
theres not 3 countrys in the UK thers scotland then wales then a tiny bit og ireland do not mix that up for a country this is why people think we r in the UK when we e not....england should free scotland and wales and the tint bit of ireland yee have
2 mistakes in your map: You've got the Isle of Man down as English, when its actually got the same status as England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland (And has closest historical ties with Scotland) & you've given the channel islands, with Guernsey and Jersey also holding the same status as all other constituent states, to France.
fail!, great britain is the name of our island as a whole which is made up of England, Wales and Scotland. plus the full name for the UK is the united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland
It's complicated in it's own way? Not really...but you still managed to get it wrong.
Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales, from the Latin/Roman name for the land of 'Britannia'. Together with Northern Ireland they form "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" (or UK for short).
(cont') for example India and Jamaica, are much more likely to have immigrants living in the UK. Why is this, do the inhabitants of these countries have special access even though they aren't citizens?
And finally, what about the whole commonwealth thing? Some are still in it, some were in it but aren't any longer...very confusing.
You guys should simplify all this stuff if you want the rest of us to keep track. I am interested in this stuff but you can't really expect everyone to be.
The whole thing is bloody confusing to us yanks, and most others out there. So what's the difference between Britain and Great Britain? Like King Arthur was from Britain, which was not yet Great Britain, right? Also, when the limeys, or whatever you're called, went out there and conquered and killed everyone they could and brought the survivors under their evil dominion, they were just part of the British Empire, right? They weren't British citizens. But now these same places, (cont')
The Irish and Welsh were on the side of the English. In our wars of Independence sadly. If they were not,Scotland would have won them a lot sooner with less blood shead.
Northern Ireland is NOT part of Great Britain but it IS part of the UK. That's why your passport says "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".
Wales was never a separate country, it was always a principality of england, which is why there isn't any welsh representation on the union flag, but It was a good idea to put this video together for our friends abroad ..........
@LukeLewisAnimation Wales was a kingdom, not a country, after the Romans left in the 5th Century, the death of Llywelyn the Last in 1282, led to the conquest of the Principality of Wales, by King Edward 1 .It has always been so ever since. The Act of the Union in 1708, was to bring the country of Scotland to the United Kingdom, not Wales, as it was by then merged into subjectivity of the English Crown. If you disagree, please let me know.....
@ianjrivers Oh by that logic then england has always been there the whole of england was Wales at 1 point before the fuckers came here from germany and france. Wales was never and has never been full conquered hense the up rising and the fight for independence in 1400's by Owain Glyndwr, and the talks in Scotland and Wales about Independence today. The act of Union for Wales and England was in 1535 under the England and Wales act. Don'd try and argue about the history of my great country again.
@LukeLewisAnimation Thanks for the reply, I get my information from history, I don't make it up, but that aside, I still don't agree that Wales was ever a country, going by what I've read, I'm sure I'm not alone. Perhaps we'll just leave it there as you've warned me never to argue about your country again ......
@ianjrivers You can think all you want look up the EU definition of Wales its a Stateless Nation. With the same rights as any Nation. Its this attitude ladys and gentlemen of Youtube that pisses us Welsh and Scots off so much. This english guy thinks he can just decide whether my country is a country or not. It has its own government, Its own anthem, Its own capital. Its own flag, Its own Language. Its own heritage and culture. But this guy and "englishness" in general is what has broken the UK.
@LukeLewisAnimation Thanks for your reply, it seems I've offended your sense of Welsh Nationalism, which wasn't my intention, so maybe we'll just leave it there, if you're happy with that. Take it easy ....
Britain is England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland is not in Britain/Great Britain. Great Britain also isn't a country, it's just the collective name for the countries on the British mainland.
Northern Ireland is, however, a constituent nation of the country of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, of which all four countries (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) are member states.
I liked your accent video, but you're entirely wrong here.
Anyway, thank you for the video, because this is one of those consistent misconceptions that it would be lovely if people understood just a little better.
Worth mentioning also that Northern Ireland is not actually part of Great Britain (Which is the big island, and its attendant archipeligos), but rather of the United Kingdom, which is an entity that formed later than GB (1801 as opposed to 1707) and included the entire island of Ireland until 1922.
well that is slightly wrong technically non of them are countrys there states the country is the united kingdom under un law. so scotland, wales and northen island are states under the rule of england which is classed under the name ofthe united kingdom which is the country.
@lankykinghasreturned Firstly, the word country does not apply solely to independent sovereign entities, it is simply one of several words to describe a geographical territory. Official documentation of the British government has consistently termed the constituent countries as just that - countries, terminology which dictionaries and so on corroborate.
Secondly, "English rule"? Character limit sadly prevents me from going over the vast array of ways in which this is wrong...
TaoTeChing is right. Look at your passport to see the full title of our state. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Of course it's only been called this since 1927. If you wanna know more, look it up.
Great Britain and United Kingdom are NOT the same thing.
Great Britain is not a country, it's just and island. England, Scotland and Wales are on that Island. The UK, officially United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the state, that includes Northern Ireland as well as the 3 countries in Great Britain.
@TaoTeChing00 they are not countrys, the welsh have never been a country and the scottish as much as they would love to argue other wise are also not country and fall under the monarchy of windsor/mt battenburg... LIKE A BOSS
@tubewearwolf England and Scotland are countries that joined to create The United Kingdom of Scotland and England. All the other countries that share our monarch are countries we invaded and gave our monarch. Scotland and England are still countries, just share the same Queen and therefore government. Scotland will soon become independent and free of English rule :)
The Crown Dependancies are not part of the UK or the EU
But they ARE British Citizens
try getting the Yanks to understand that one

Not really. British accent denotes exactly that: speaker uses one of four major accents of Britain,
that could be Scottish or English,Northern Irish or Welsh// which again are divided into many subgroups.

Aaaahhhhh!!! it goes to show that even Brits get this wrong, confusing Americans even more.
UK = Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) + Northern Ireland
This is a political term.
British Isles = Great Britain + Ireland + Channel Islands + Isle of Man
This is a geographic term.
