This stuff sounds correct but they forgot to tell you the easiest, simplest way of keeping your clothes clean: don't wash them that often. Man, I'll wear the same shirt like 5+ times before I wash it -- usually more (unless I work out in it or do something that gets me sweaty). Regular clothes that you don't get very dirty can go several times without washing as long as you keep clean and don't smell. Plus, less laundry.

I wouldn't skimp on washing underwear or socks though....

You should not (!) use liquid detergents!! They do not contain water softener so liquids need more tensides (detergents) to work which are very bad for the environment! Use a powder instead and put fewer clothes into the drum so you won't have powder stains on it.
