Yessiirrrr you told the muthafreakin' truth Bo.....about taking the initiative mostly I was always told when I was an apprentice. And you right loyalty and good character is something the many do not get as they come into the construction craft. I am glad someone decided to tell the truth of the matter. I been a journeyman for about 5 yrs and been in the craft totally 9yrs now. I hope someone will apprecitate this clip. I do....
ill be honost im 17 no one expects anything from me but a hand thrust and an eager face like im about to get something for free. i hate it i got my old ford truck after my grandfather died he left it to me so that it would help teach me responsibility just like the carpentry he taught me. i have been smithing for over a year now and i still love it now i am scrapping the bottom here using charcoal a freakin cast iron anvil and little to no working material but i still love this craft
I Fully Understand were your coming from .I am Currently a Meat cutter Apprentice. The Main Person teaching me At work is the same Person who is Teaching Me Processing .I Have Been Working Under them for over 3.5 Years and Yes Loyalty is Key Not just to the Person But to the Craft. So thank you for Letting People Young and Old the Real Reason to Shut up and Listen. and Always do more then your told and Clean More then you need and Ask Questions when you need .
I AGREE WITH YOU COMPLETLY NOT ONLY YOUR GENERATION BUT MINE AS WELL IM 23 I WANT TO BE AN APPRENTICE I AM HONEST DEDICATED AND LOYAL BUT SOME PEOPLE JUST DON'T SEE IT CAUSE OF THE GENERATION I COME FROM BUT NOT EVERYONE IS LIKE THAT I LOVE THE CRAFT THE ART IT IS AMAZING BUT NO ONE AROUND WHERE I LIVE
Hello sir I've watched a good amount of your videos so far and you've taught me a lot. I'm just getting my hands dirty in the forge and i've been doing everything solo thus far, learning how to build my own forge online. I keep feeling like i'm in over my head sometimes by messing up so many projects through trail and error, then reading about metals online and seeing theres so much to learn. I hope one day I'll find a seasoned smith who can teach me personally. Thanks for the vids
Very well said ... and IT IS a "great tip for improving your craft." I am an structural ironworker by trade and went through 4 years of apprenticeship ... many things that you said in regards to your generation or those afterwards I see in the apprentices in my craft. No dedication. No respect. Along with the mentality that I, or other journeyman/master, owe that apprentice something that is not rightfully earned. Top hands are never given anything.
ahhh fuckin men brother.ive seen so many kids come and go.ive been in auto shops and dealerships allmost 30 years, and everything is moore important than coming to work ect...and then complain cause they arnt making any money..there altitude makes them worthless they know everthing wont listen to reason..
Our society upsets me. Everytime I give my loyalty, dedication, ect. I get pooped on and loose heart. I understand this is a exuse. I hope I stop making exuses for myself someday Thanks for the life lessons.
so very true!!! it saddens me that todays generation is so lacking in character! i feel as tho todays generation thinks that society owes them, and should hand them everything they want just for breathing... i pray that the morals of my generation improve...
Well I understand you exactly, but where do you find a master to apprentice under... I've got loads of passion for it but can't find out where or how to start
you are so right.i am retired now 30 years as railroad freight car builder .apprenticeship is not what it used to be.the work has been farmed out ,the length of the aprrenticeship shortened .even the lessons in the trade illiminated. its a different world now. russian anvils say a lot about not only our economy.the usa needs more people like you.we as a country need to stop exporting our jobs.we need to nurture an attitude like yours .
I understand and I agree with most of what you said, but there's also a degree of humility on the smith's part that needs to be taken seriously. Sometimes people have other priorities, like family, and friends...or whatever. Not all of our generation is spoiled and ignorant, either. Also, you CAN go to school to be a smith. There's a highly accredited art school in southern Illinois that offer a bachelors and masters degree in metalsmithing. You did put out a positive message and I thank you.
It's hard to find any masters in St.Louis. I know a friend of my family is a gunsmith but it takes an Hour and a half just to reach his shop and his hours are wierd cause he opens when he wants to.
Those words should be listened to by everyone who is below the age of 35.... How can I qualify that statement? Easy. I'm 35, a father of four, committed to a relationship of some nearly 14yrs. Top that off with some 12 yrs as an active scaffolder.I'm an amateur smith who, in spite of the lack of someone to guide me, is slowly learning the many facets of metallurgy and forging steel. I have seen the decline in true character you speak of, and I can only hope that I can teach my boys to be men.
Excellent point and it reminds me that as a parent, (she's almost three) I will need to keep myself from just giving her everything she wants. Now my Dad was great at finding a way for my brother and I to earn what we wanted. Even if it was a book of stickers my niece wanted when she was 6.
RIGHT ON..Run for President Trent cos speeches like that are what are needed to get kids off their arse, bin the bloody game boys and proove their worth !!
I wanted to make knives ,tools etc. so I built a forge, sourced the fuel, stock, tools and damn well DID IT and hold down two jobs, family and a rock band,,,you wanted to make a pneumatic hammer,,guess what ,,you made a beauty...power to you!!
trent i agree 110% . i try to to teach my sons this very thing . the future is bleek with the up and coming generation ! i have to ask, where are the cats ? thanks for all you do for us!!!!
Bravo! Well said. I only wish I had learned that lesson on my own a lot sooner than I did. It's sad when you get older and you realize what your parents mean when they say "Hire a teenager while they still know everything." It's even worse when you realize what old people mean when they say "Youth is wasted on the young." At least I learned it sooner rather than later.
Great points!! My generation is so spoild that it's scary.. And that's sad to see. The parents think "hey, lets get my kids all the things that I didn't have!" Well they forgot one of the most improtant things.. Life experience.. You don't get that if you get served on a silver plate all the time..
oh yes,,did that myself(get them what I never had) wished I'd never done it so well now..should have made them work a bit harder..cruel to be kind..etc
I am from a generation newer than yours I've wanted to be a blacksmith for years now. I feel I have the dedication and loyalty to become an apprentice, but there are no blacksmiths in my area.
there is no greater feeling than using tools, a forge, and skills that you've aquired and made on your own. i never allowed myself to take the easy way out. and i never will. i've never learned anything when i took the easy way out. but now there is nothing i can't do basically.
you're absolutely right especially the kids in my generation. i'm 17 and i've taught myself 18 skilled crafts and 3 hobbies. in that short time i've been sliced open, burned, beaten, battered, and bruised but i haven't let it stop me yet. blacksmithing, and bladesmithing being my favorites. i built my own forge from nuts, bolts, scrapped wheel barrels, an old bench press (thankfully i'm a body builder otherwise it wouldn't have worked) and i lined the forge with river clay that i collected too.
hehe!! then i guess it is a good thing that i am loyal and very dedicated to whatever i put my mind to. lol i have always told ppl that i was not meant to be in this time!
Yep, it's every man for himself today. Look out for number one. Live for the moment. It's a belief that's taught on TV and promoted by all the reality shows. Today it's extraordinary to find a young person who is teachable.
You speak the truth. A kid help me pick up a rag I dropped and when he went to give it back he was going to charge me 4 dollars. Its wrong to hit children so I just threw him in the bushes.
This is bloody brilliant. Thank you.

But good vids, I have learned from them and enjoyed watching them.
