  • so what size compression sack would you recomend for stuffing the whole rig in including bag....(mine is a down bag) just find its taking up too much space in the bottom of my pack the way i store it now(totally loose)

  • @piratesofsubspace I wouldn't recommend putting the down bag in with it. It would probably take a pretty big sack

  • Would like the open air. Have you used it in the cold weather? Do you know whether the super shelter works on a HH with a side enterence. Also I picked up a tip of using a caribiner and two repel rings, which makes set up real easy . really easy

  • @rockynanach I never used them in cold weather past 0C because of the other rigs I'm using now. Went to -25C with those. I'm not sure the over cover part of the SS would work with a zipper mod it could be a challenge trying to button it down on the zipper side. But one could modify it. Since I got the new rigs I've mainly just used the HH's for lounging in when trailer camping :o)Some day I will put in the mods and some whoopie slings most likely.

  • I've been using the HH deluxe for about a month straight last summer, its amazing. I have opted for the zipper model now, because at times you feel to enclosed and wou

  • @rockynanach I was considering the zipper mod as well. But I'm not in a rush to do it now. I went with a completely different setup last year. Check them out :o)

  • Liked your 3 parter on the HENNESSY , I think it would be even better if the snake skins were large enough to let you leave the underpad attached all the time .

In stead of hooking it on and of every time you set up or strike your hammock ?

So when you find the perfect camp site , everything is in that snake skin all ready for setting up .

  • @Figure14HH Thanks buddy, and you're totally rite :o)The skins should have been big enough to keep in the pad in it.

  • Excellent video, Im getting tired of finding a place to put my tent when we hike, and sleeping on the ground. Definitely going to order one of these very soon

    Thank you

  • @Ksamurai101 Thanks :o) They make the new version with the side entry zipper. Much better in my opinion!

  • Excellent demo. I've just bought the super shelter and found your video really helpful. Thanks.

  • @matthewmartin1970 Excellent Have fun with it :o)

  • Well Done!

  • @n9hxv1986 Thanks :o)

  • I would have liked to see how you get into your sleeping bag in that contraption.

  • @Ebiczebulanious These awesome hammocks you call a contraption are very easy to get into a sleeping bag providing you have a top or left hand zipper and a little brain power :o)

  • I didn't see a pan left/right while in the hammock. I'm curious, does your over and undercover separate and open up so things get drafty?

I've been on three trips since last fall with a HH hammock and found that with a regular thermarest, my weight causes gaps to open up. I remedied it with some tarp clamp.

With the thermarest and a -30C rated sleeping bag, it worked great for some -10C February camping.

  • @sessionfiddler I don't recall having that issue unless you really start to push on it with your feet. Maybe it's the thermarest pad.

  • @Gensonicable Right on! I see the ones with the zipper mods. That's definitely better than the bottom entry!

  • OK. I have to say that I have enough problems getting into my hammock from the side. I love this setup. It is slick and I enjoyed your demonstration. But if I saw this in the store, after my own personal experience, I would walk away.

  • @EconoChallenge Hehe! You're funny man. Getting in the side of a hammock is simple...hehe It's all about technique man. Getting in these ones takes a bit more technique but really not that difficult. Although now I would prefer the zipper mod for sure :o)

  • I have had my HH up a couple of times and I am having tarp problems. Tarp is taut when i set up but loosens and luffs in the wind when I get in. do you experience this?

  • @dragonflyhiker No I haven't had this problem. Sounds like you don't have the hammock tight enough. So when you get in it sags the ridge line and loosens the fly. That's all I can tell ya :o) How do ya like it other than that? I personally am getting tired of the bottom entry. Were going to get some side zippers put in soon.

  • @Ggreenvideos Thanks for the answer. I haven't spent a night in it yet so I will let you know. My buddy just got his back from 2QZQ with mod 2 zipper put in. Should be some videos from our hang on April 9-11 so you will have to check it out

  • @dragonflyhiker Yeah, for sure man. I'm just going to get it done locally. It isn't worth for me to send them that far. pay for shipping, and insurance. It's something so simple any good seamstress can do. Sending mine to 2QZQ would cost way to much from here...hehe! I have some open hammocks coming in. Going to give those a try....and get winter tarps for them.

  • About how long did it take to set that thing up your first time? If you folks are using that all the way up in Canada it must be a durable piece of equipment and plenty warm. Again love the video besides the bug in my ear hahaha.

  • The first time probably took close to an hour...I'm guessing...hehe! But once you get it all figured out it's a breeze! After it's setup this way, tear down is easy! All that is removed is the under pad, then it all rolls up in the snakeskins :o) It's durable enough for -15c to -20c. Although they can be cold on the back without a down under quilt in those temps! Thanks for your great comment :o)

  • If you don't mind my asking, whereabouts in Canada are you? I'm in Washington state. Thanks for the quick response!

  • The good ol' Yukon my friend :o) The last of the great Canadian Frontier :o)

  • Hi. I know it's a stupid question but I want to be clear in what I think you are saying. Are you saying that the overcover, undercover, hammock and fly all roll up and fit in the regular snakeskins? Thanks!

  • Yup! The hammock... including under cover, over cover and fly all fit in the #4 snake skins. Those are their biggest :o)

  • Nice demonstration of the HH! Have you had the chance to use it often enough to comment on long term durability? Definitely a good way to spend a night out in the wilderness keeping the skeeters at bay! I'm contemplating getting one!

  • Thanks! We've used them quite often actually. There plenty durable enough. We we're going to use them this winter but haven't bought any down under quilts for them and as you can see it's freakin' cold...hehe!They do need the under quilt in our climate :o)

  • I would like to use this system year round as well. Please, when you get a chance to get some testing done, post your opinions on the performance in the cold weather. I would really like to know! :D

  • Yup you bet man. I've heard of it being tested to -18c! As for us, well we might not until feb or march now...hehe!

  • First time I have seen the snake skin idea. That is a great feature. I tied some material off the main line to deal with rain running down the rope. This is a much better system! Thanks again for sharing this with us.

  • Thanks buddy :o) Those snakeskins are only $20 if you buy them separate. There's different sizes too! Mine are the biggest #4 Hennessy hammocks has them. I'm not sure you could make them cheaper...maybe :o)

  • Thank you, very, very well done. I'm sold on Hennessey for sure.

  • Thanks man :o)

  • Sweet vid dude, I just bought one of these and I'm full of confidence now after being a bit sketchy on the whole gig. So you fit the Hammock, the Fly, the Under-cover, AND the super shelter inside the snake skins?

You just took that pad out and it was all a sweet fit?

But yeah, decent vid for sure.

  • Thanks!... You got it dude :o) Just the pad comes out...and of course, your sleeping bag... roll the rest up, slide over the skins and you're gone :o)

  • most complete set-up I have seen thanks. I bought a HH this summer but never got to use it. Hope to this fall

  • You're very welcome! I was glad to do it :o)

We haven't used ours for a couple of months now. We won't be using them now until I buy a couple of down underquilts...which are very pricey :o( Hope fully soon :o)

  • Good Video. One important thing you missed was added space blanket on the pad, as mentioned on the Hennessy Website, which makes things quite a bit warmer.

did you get the undercover (minus the pad) and overcover in the snakeskins ?

  • Thanks...Actually I didn't miss the space blanket as it doesn't come with one.The video was done in the middle of summer, there is no need for a space blanket. Everything but the pad goes in the snakeskins. thanks for watchin' :o)

  • great video ive jest tested the hennessy hammock survivor in woodland camo love it hope they do the super shelter in camo

  • I've had my HH Explorer since Feb.1st hang in April and decided to go with the super shelter instead of the closed cell foam pad approach. I plan to make this purchase towards the end of the summer so I was happy to come across this video series. But even happier to see that you cut NO corners making this video. All three parts are clear, comprehensive and easy to understand. I also appreciate the heads up on the stuff sack. Thanks again for your time and energy! Well Done!

  • I appreciate your awesome comment. You are a true gentleman. I ended up buying a 22" x 51/2" thermarest stuff sack for the pad...works great , no hassle whatsoever putting it in. Not like the hennessy sack. Even the sack for the hammock is bordering on being too small when the supershelter is on...but it works.Thanks...enjoy...keep on hangin' :o)

  • I just got my Hennessy last week. We camped out over some nasty terrain and it worked out great, although my butt was a little cold. The super shelter arrived today and I just put it on without reading the instructions. Your video is very helpful. I will go fix my set up tomorrow so it's done with the new updates.

    Great video!!

  • Thanks...I'm glad it was helpful to you ;o)

  • One thing I was curious about. Once I have my insulation pad in place. It is sort of in the way of the entrance slit. How do you have it set up? Partially covering the entrance? That seems to be where it wants to sit naturally.

    Thanks

  • Yes...It does want to partially cover the entrance, but as you're walking into it you just push it over to the left as you would with your sleeping bag, then turn so your backside is in. As you fall into it your body weight closes the velcro opening and the pad seems to shift back a little where it was. One tip: a mummy bag works best in it due to the narrow foot end. Hope that helped :o)

  • Ok I thought that was going to happen anyway. Thanks for the confirmation.

Yes, I happen to only own mummy bags so that's pretty much taken care off.

The comment about the stuff sack I think was priceless. I wasn't even going to attempt to put that pad back in the bag. In fact, since I have taken it out, the bag has been used yet.

Anyone want to buy an unused Hennessy under pad stuff sack? Brand new!! ;-)

  • ya might want to keep it in case you make one of those hammock chairs

  • Rich, Great job, and very informative. As a new HH Explorer Deluxe owner, it's always great to see a detailed setup. Thanks for the video!

  • You're very welcome. Hope you enjoyed it. I enjoyed doing it ;o)

  • Great video, it was very informative. I'm debating about getting one for my HH. Have you tested it out in winter conditions?

  • Thanks :o) Depending on where you live...the hammock would be fairly cold without the supershelter, even in summer! It's amazing what a difference it makes. Especially with the underpad. We've already had nights go down to +3C.There was moisture between the undercover and the underpad, but never penetrated through the pad. We have -15C mummy bags...so we do plan on using them in the winter. Down to around -20C. We haven't had them long enough to use them in winter yet.

  • awesome seies very informative as i just purchased an expedition a-sym and was wondering about the super shelter accesory thanks

  • Your very welcome ...glad to do it :0)

  • Nice job. I have two deluxe explorers, love em. I use my REI trekker pad, works very well. One trick with the snake skins is I tuck the foot end INTO the other so next time I camp I know which way the opening will face.

  • For sure...that's exactly what I did, but I'm going to mark one so I can tell which end is which. Sometimes they slip apart just enough to mess ya' up..haha :o)

  • Your very welcome! thanks:0)

  • thanks, i had no clue how to work the snakeskins, the instructions on the bag were useless. i just bought the deluxe explorer. how tight should the rope be? great video.

  • The rope should be fairly tight, as you don't want it to be too saggy. If the rope is really loose then the screen will feel to collapsed. But you also don't want it too tight either...haha! You be the judge! Thanks for watching...;0)

  • How's it goin, ey? 5 stars!

  • Hey Rich, nice series - very informative! I never spent a night in a hammock, cause i don`t know what my back will answer me the next morning ... :o)

But I´ll try it in the next time - and i´ll have my camera with me !!!

  • Hey my freind,

I actually have lower back problems and I found the hammock so comfortable that I didn't even want to get out! Better than any bed I've ever slept on...seriously!

  • were did you get your under and over coverer and padand how much did you pay for them

  • The undercover and overcover come with the underpad which is all part of Hennessy's Super Shelter. you can get it from Hennessy Hammock in Galiano Island B.C. Thanks for watching! :0)

  • I checked on Hennesy's site and do not see that the over cover is included with the supershelter system. Is this just a typo or have they stopped including it with this system? Excellent video by the way. As a previous reviewer stated, this is very complete and easy to understand. I like that everything can fit into the snake skins without taking everything off. Thanks again, great job!

  • You may be rite :o) It's been a while...hehe! It is possible the over cover is not included with the super shelter. The stuff sack came with the pad and undercover stuffed in there. And I mean stuffed...hehe. Thanks man !

  • sweet just the thing i was looking for i just ordered one and i am going camping next week and going to use it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Rite on...Have fun...and keep on hangin'...haha! :0)

  • Awesome Videos series! thanks for taking the time to do this video. 5/5 ED

  • You are very welcome Ed! And thankyou for watching and rating. I would reccommend the hammock to anyone! If you hate sleeping on the cold hard ground this is the ticket! Have a great day!
