I've had good & bad mentors. When I was doing student teaching I had a mentor who wouldn't let me teach any classes; just sit on the side and watch. I developed a lousy rapport with the students. But when another mentor allowed me to step in and teach a class, it went well.

If the mentor doesn't trust his pupil, it's not going to work.
