I was getting into an elevator at 30 Rockefeller Center- this was a few years after this Cavett appearance- and saw Fairbanks coming out. I didn't realize who it was until later when he appeared on some NBC show, I forgot which. He was the same as in this clip, the dark suit, tie, tan & shock of white hair. I didn't know who he was when I saw him, yet I knew he was somebody! Raquel is showing a lot of thigh at 2:50, not that you can blame her. Still, I think her best feature is her face.

Such a shame Fairbanks, Sr. died so young. Cary Grant famously persuaded this Fairbanks to switch parts in "Gunga Din" and Fairbanks, Jr. never quite seemed to realize that he lost the role that would've been played by his father in earlier years. It's always good to see him and he shouldn't be unfairly denigrated because he wasn't the personality Fairbanks, Sr. was. He was in the same boat as Frank Sinatra, Jr..

I get what both Janis and Raquel are saying about Dennis Hopper. I think what they said shows the difference between a rock star and a movie star. A rock star's lifestyle is just as fascinating as their work. An actor wants to portray a convincing character and attention on his or her lifestyle or persona created by the media can overshadow his/her performance regardless how well they deliver a line. I think that was what Raquel was trying to say.

Raquel was trying to sound old-school and serious about "the work" when she, as well as anybody, had to know that people are interested in the personal lives of actors and actresses. It just isn't realistic to write magazine articles that focus totally on filmmaking and acting. That's why we have TV programs like "Inside the Actors Studio", for example. No wonder Raquel Welch is mostly forgettable while we all remember and love Janis.

I was getting into an elevator at 30 Rockefeller Center- this was a few years after this Cavett appearance- and saw Fairbanks coming out. I didn't realize who it was until later when he appeared on some NBC show, I forgot which. He was the same as in this clip, the dark suit, tie, tan & shock of white hair. I didn't know who he was when I saw him, yet I knew he was somebody! Raquel is showing a lot of thigh at 2:50, not that you can blame her. Still, I think her best feature is her face.
