@joshman879 The APU or Auxiliary power unit is a small jet engine in the rear of the aircraft it kinds looks like an exhaust pipe where it is it is a small jet engine that provides electrical power to the aircraft when it's on the ground at the airport and the engines are off it is off during flight because the engines power the plane during flight :)
Great tutorial, thanks! Just a bit of info, when you selected the departure runway, it reset your v-speeds. That was because of runway slope. Basically, if the FMC thinks you've changed the runway, it will think the new runway has a different slope. In FSX though, slope isn't simulated. I find it easier to do DEP ARR first. Stunning tutorial, really has helped. :)

@maxximmus3 you wanna "close" the discon. Bring whatever is in the row under the boxes and paste it onto the discon. A route discon is just teling you you have a "break" in the route. You need to close the break so the FMC knows what to do for all legs.

why people buy these complicate add-ons, if then they must watch a tutorial because they don't know where to start, learn about avionics, and the manual inside the disc, and learn by yourself how to fly, if you don't want to spend time to learn about avionics fly the default planes which sucks but they are easy.
The PMDG B747 is a great add-on. But quite hard to fly on your own.
It's even more immersive (and easier to operate) when used alongside a voice control add-on called "Multi Crew Experience"(for which a Demo is available). I don't have to struggle with dialling speed, altitude and heading when my hands are tied on manual approach.
You just need a microphone to experience the thrill of voice control.
How can I know it advance what runway I'm gonna land on, since ATC gives you a runway shortly before you start your approach? Which brings me to a next question many people might have already asked: how do I use my FMC flightplan and SID/STAR in co-operation with FS ATC?
How can you pick your STAR and landing runway so far in advance? Surely weather can change during the flight meaning you would have to change your arrival plan?

Hi. I start the flight then load the cold and dark pannel setting. Whenever i try to align the IRS the ND Mode Selector (switch the CRT Display among APP, VOR, MAP, PLN) will stop working, even though the IRS align is complete. If I start the game with engines running, etc, i can properly use dht ND Mode Selector. Any clues of what could be wrong?

@jordan4541 to get fuel first you start up fs09 or fsx then choose your plane.After you click on fuel and payload and choose how much fuel you want in %.

Do you HAVE to configure the FMC, for instance, on my first flight I don't want to go to a different airport, I just want to try the plane out going where I want. So would it matter if I just missed the FMC part completely??
@Nikedude109 Go to the pmdg menu and somewhere in there you have to enable external power. Can't remember where exactly now and I can't look it up, but it's there somewhere. Also, your parking brakes need to be set and you have to be parked at an airport (yes..obvious..i know). When you do all this, you should see the "avail" light on the external power button illuminated.
@Nikedude109 Hey mate! I had this problem too but i sovled it! Load your flight with PMDG 744. Then open menu bar, go to Add ons, PMDG, PMDG Options and go to Various. There you will see a box that says Ground Air/Power Available. It's not checked! So check it, press OK and you will be fine! Happy Flights!
Hey, I purchased the PMDG 747 today and i think it's great, but one question, when i put up the COM panel, with the seat belt sign and so on, the boxes where the radio frequencies should be is dark and the box for the squawkbox aswell, how can I fix it? As far as I now that isn't possible, you can create a flight with FSBuild and convert it to .rte (PMDG flightplan format) and then load it un the FMC. For example: If I have created a flight from EHAM to TNCM I create the flight with FSBuild and export it PMDG format, then I enter the FMC and at coroute I enter EMAMTNCM (FSBuild saved it that way into *drive*\FSX\PMDG\flightplans) Feel free to ask me some things, I am also learning the PMDG 747 right now so im not Uber Pro.
@TheDutchWings I found out now what the problem was. I have to start FSX in Administrator-Mode in order to save plans which I have entered manually. (right klick: run programm as admin) Then you don't need a payware programm. Then you just have to klick "copy route" in the ROUTE- page of the FMC.

i think i goes to show that you actually need to be able to know how to fly one of these in real life in order to do this on Flight Simulator..this sucks!
I am afraid that most times people don't explain properly what PMDG is, it stands for Precision Manuals Development Group. It is a commercial add-on aircraft developer for the Microsoft Flight Simulator series. just type in PMDG simulations on the internet and you will see the website, you have to purchase this software and it can be loaded on to your FSX or whatever Microsoft Flightsim you may have. all you do is choose your plane and download.
About that part when you said, that you cannot go faster than 250knots if you're below 10000ft: there's a more simple way to make the aircraft to fly at 250knots. Just press VNAV on the FMC ant there's a line "Speed Rest" or something like that, simply type 250/10000 and you're all done :) Sorry for bad english.

Currently running PMDG 747-400 on Windows 7, just like your tutorial.
For some reason my PC will not save the .sav files. The general location is saved, ie EGLL, but the panel state returns to default values for the MCP speed, ALT, ect. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
hey get ur message i have everything working as good as gold now it was so easy i dunno wawt i was doing wrong but i figured it out i dont remember my question but thanks for all the help im not really into the 747 now becasue i have a shit graphics card adn it jsut eats my frames with everything down low and in a default plane like 737 i get about 13 fps and every thing is down low so the 747 doesnt help but wen i get really good graphics card il use it :)
@MRmatthieu49 You gota go to the PMDG Option and goto "Various" then at the bottom of the menu, under the "Ground Condition", Select "EDG Drive" for people with V1.2 Update and For people without the update, "Ground Power Availble" ( I not sure is it called Ground Power Available but it's something quite close to it) Hope it helps.
@Collected23 Hello, guys I think i got it. i had the same problem and what happened was i checked the options under the "Add-ons>PMDG>General/*Options" menu. Then you check the various tab all the way on the bottom and check the ground power avail :) Cheers
@MRmatthieu49 the engines cant be on, external power comes from the ground crew, (assuming you have external power enabled in the pmdg setting) you have to turn the engines off. do you really think the ground crew would come anywhere near the plane with the engines running?
hey, when i start a flight with the 747 the navigation display does not show my planned route. it shows the heading which i entered from the autopilot but i cant see the solid purple line which is my route
watching tutorials is more efficient and faster than plowing through reams of pages and getting nowhere you can read after the main functions are up and working and you get started much faster and with less agro this way. there are plenty on youtube and I use them as they are a very useful learning tool:
i think the reason its not allowing u to enter FL340 is because it is calculating that for efficient flight ur optimum cruise height should be at FL304. so that may have been based on the amount of fuel/pax u have onboard at that point of the flight. So try changing the fuel quantity and see if that will allow you to make the change.

Hi. I start the flight then load the cold and dark pannel setting. The A On the FMC legs page for the VNAV means that your aircraft will be at let's say 3000A or above.
So 3000A would mean 3000 or above. Great tutorial though!

As far as I now that isn't possible, you can create a flight with FSBuild and convert it to .rte (PMDG flightplan format) and then load it un the FMC. For example: If I have created a flight from EHAM to TNCM I create the flight with FSBuild and export it PMDG format, then I enter the FMC and at coroute I enter EMAMTNCM (FSBuild saved it that way into *drive*\FSX\PMDG\flightplans) Feel free to ask me some things, I am also learning the PMDG 747 right now so im not Uber Pro.

@TheDutchWings I found out now what the problem was. I have to start FSX in Administrator-Mode in order to save plans which I have entered manually. (right klick: run programm as admin) Then you don't need a payware programm. Then you just have to klick "copy route" in the ROUTE- page of the FMC.

I am afraid that most times people don't explain properly what PMDG is, it stands for Precision Manuals Development Group. It is a commercial add-on aircraft developer for the Microsoft Flight Simulator series. just type in PMDG simulations on the internet and you will see the website, you have to purchase this software and it can be loaded on to your FSX or whatever Microsoft Flightsim you may have. all you do is choose your plane and download.

About that part when you said, that you cannot go faster than 250knots if you're below 10000ft: there's a more simple way to make the aircraft to fly at 250knots. Just press VNAV on the FMC ant there's a line "Speed Rest" or something like that, simply type 250/10000 and you're all done :) Sorry for bad english.

Hi excellent Video.
Currently running PMDG 747-400 on Windows 7, just like your tutorial.
For some reason my PC will not save the .sav files. The general location is saved, ie EGLL, but the panel state returns to default values for the MCP speed, ALT, ect. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

hey get ur message i have everything working as good as gold now it was so easy i dunno wawt i was doing wrong but i figured it out i dont remember my question but thanks for all the help im not really into the 747 now becasue i have a shit graphics card adn it jsut eats my frames with everything down low and in a default plane like 737 i get about 13 fps and every thing is down low so the 747 doesnt help but wen i get really good graphics card il use it :)

@MRmatthieu49 You gota go to the PMDG Option and goto "Various" then at the bottom of the menu, under the "Ground Condition", Select "EDG Drive" for people with V1.2 Update and For people without the update, "Ground Power Availble" ( I not sure is it called Ground Power Available but it's something quite close to it) Hope it helps.

@Collected23 Hello, guys I think i got it. i had the same problem and what happened was i checked the options under the "Add-ons>PMDG>General/*Options" menu. Then you check the various tab all the way on the bottom and check the ground power avail :) Cheers

@MRmatthieu49 the engines cant be on, external power comes from the ground crew, (assuming you have external power enabled in the pmdg setting) you have to turn the engines off. do you really think the ground crew would come anywhere near the plane with the engines running?

hey, when i start a flight with the 747 the navigation display does not show my planned route. it shows the heading which i entered from the autopilot but i cant see the solid purple line which is my route

watching tutorials is more efficient and faster than plowing through reams of pages and getting nowhere you can read after the main functions are up and working and you get started much faster and with less agro this way. there are plenty on youtube and I use them as they are a very useful learning tool:

i think the reason its not allowing u to enter FL340 is because it is calculating that for efficient flight ur optimum cruise height should be at FL304. so that may have been based on the amount of fuel/pax u have onboard at that point of the flight. So try changing the fuel quantity and see if that will allow you to make the change.

hey how do i get the auto thr spd hold thingy to apply 100% pwr wen im below my spd hld like at 41000ft i ask it to maitain 280 kts and it just sits on bout 80% or maby bit more but wont spd up and loses spd slowly so i ad full pwr and switch it back on and it slowes down again y is this

hey there um yea i flew out of nzaa the other day and i chose a waypoint bout 7 nm from the rwy and i put in fmc and wen i added all of my other waypoints and clicked activate the way point was 6036 nm away or somfing so do u know how to edit waypoints
