I've had the opportunity to compete head to head with Anthony at the Saginaw store, and I must say he should have won this thing each of the past three years. Ramon's winning solo was dope as was Jerome's and the competition was close, but come on now..... this was clearly the best solo of 2010... sure it had its gimmicks, but it's difficult to see how that hurts his case given the "winning" solo... Looking forward to some stiff competition in a few weeks!!

@jej495 It actually is harder to hold on to them than you think. The stick can go flying anytime, anywhere, by any means. It doesn't matter how hard you're playing. BUT it it really is that hard to NOT drop the sticks, then you probably have horrible technique and hold your sticks too hard.

In my opinion, he didn't have what he judges were looking for. What I mean by that is, he didn't have enough of a variety or typical solo arrangement. He's cold, I'm not going to lie about that, but his solo was based off grooves and tricks. Look at your GC Drum Off winners and actually listen to their varieties and you'll see what Im talking about. Im a gospel drummer and all I can say, unfortunately, is he's too much of a "Gospel" drum. Smh.

I don't know if anyone's noticed, but when he's playing that beat on 0:56, you can hear him (and see him) pull the snare level back and forth to make that beat.

this guy and the finalists in the past two years all can kick my ass, but i feel like the competition has become more a gimmick in the past years. little tricks, like ramon's jogging drumming or this guy putting a cymbal on his head. it doesn't really show you can play the instrument well. it means you can do a trick. i want the donnie marple's and the eric moore's to come back.
@kingvincedrums This might come as a sad truth to some, but the ability to put out a good show is very important for musicians. Seen on stage, a better performing artists with average skill can in many cases be more fun then a high level player with bad performance ability (such as not smiling, looking bored, looking down at the stage..).
Now days schools for modern music rate musicians also by the level in which they perform.
@kingvincedrums I definitely agree with @Celerity2. ALSO; those tricks give you a different sound. Also an original sound. So, I've got to disagree with you KingVince.
@kingvincedrums While I agree with you, I believe the Drum Off has always kinda been like that. Donnie Marple and Eric Moore (not saying they can't play, because obviously they can) also used "tricks" in their solos as well. Both Marple and Eric Moore used stick flips/twirls (Moore also used electronic sound effects). I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but I think the showmanship aspect has always been there even before the last two years.
@ronied125 That video of Eric Moore is from the following year after he won. he was performing as a special guest thats why he was able to use sound effects. That wasnt the actual solo that he won with.
@kingvincedrums on top of that, Anthony Burns only put the cymbal on top of his head for a few seconds and saved it toward the end of the solo. Anyway, that's just my opinion. From what I hear, the Guitar Center Drum Off is a bit biased as well. But that's only what I've heard.

i hate the front view camera i mean dont get me wrong i like to see the kit every once in a while but i think its more interesting to see what hes doing better than how does it looks lol

this guy and the finalists in the past two years all can kick my ass, but i feel like the competition has become more a gimmick in the past years. little tricks, like ramon's jogging drumming or this guy putting a cymbal on his head. it doesn't really show you can play the instrument well. it means you can do a trick. i want the donnie marple's and the eric moore's to come back.

@kingvincedrums This might come as a sad truth to some, but the ability to put out a good show is very important for musicians. Seen on stage, a better performing artists with average skill can in many cases be more fun then a high level player with bad performance ability (such as not smiling, looking bored, looking down at the stage..).
Now days schools for modern music rate musicians also by the level in which they perform.

@kingvincedrums While I agree with you, I believe the Drum Off has always kinda been like that. Donnie Marple and Eric Moore (not saying they can't play, because obviously they can) also used "tricks" in their solos as well. Both Marple and Eric Moore used stick flips/twirls (Moore also used electronic sound effects). I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but I think the showmanship aspect has always been there even before the last two years.

@ronied125 That video of Eric Moore is from the following year after he won. he was performing as a special guest thats why he was able to use sound effects. That wasnt the actual solo that he won with.

@kingvincedrums on top of that, Anthony Burns only put the cymbal on top of his head for a few seconds and saved it toward the end of the solo. Anyway, that's just my opinion. From what I hear, the Guitar Center Drum Off is a bit biased as well. But that's only what I've heard.

@kingvincedrums That is exactly how I feel. I don't even bother to compete anymore because if you can do a stick trick, you win. There's no more innovative playing anymore, it's just gay little things that show how much you've practiced. BULLSHIT.
