  • I forgot to add that our brother and sister swimmers and para rescue all rightfully deserve such a motto as well, same team :)

  • Just so you all know, the first ones to use "So others may live" comes from the United States Life Saving Service, one of the founding services that were combined to form the USCG. The original Surfman from back in 1876 coined the term, then rescue swimmers stole it when the Surfman motto changed to "You have to go out, but you don't have to come back" Study your history before you post. There was no para rescue or rescue swimmers in the 1800's Just FYI :)

  • What's this background music from? The "Twlight Zone" ?

  • Gee,I remember some of my patches in 1973 having the phrase "So Others May Live"after doing advanced surf rescue,There was no such things as Rescue Swimmers back then. The term for similiar crewman was "Aviation Survivalman"

  • Semper Paratus means 'Always prepared'.

  • Matt, Semper Paratus (Always Ready) Is the USCG motto.

  • Awesome! Seriously one of the best USCG vids on youtube!

  • yes we did use "So others may live"

  • I love the Coasties!

  • mbc2915, There motto is actually "Semper Paratus" or in English, "Always Ready"!

  • @TelcoPhil actually so others may live is the rescue swimmer motto

  • semper paratus from one to all

  • Good work. Something original. Thank you.

  • "so others may live" is the Rescue swimmers motto

  • Wish me luck. Hopefully heading to OCS soon...

  • im joing the coast guard after high school

  • so others may live is there motto

  • I thought that the USCG motto was Semper Paratus = Always Ready...

So others may live is the motto of the Rescue Swimmers if I'm not mistaken

  • ur right

  • Your correct, the RS motto is So others may live and Semper Paratus is the USCG motto.

  • @MattTrecartin actually so others may live" was orginally the offical motto of the National Search And Rescue School and just one of many other unofficial mottos of the Coast Guard. My favorite was ¨the rule book says you have to go out but there is nothing in it saying you have to come back¨.

  • @MattTrecartin you are correct in saying that.

  • @MattTrecartin it is

  • @MattTrecartin Correct, So Others May Live is the Swimmer (AST) motto, It's the Navy Swimmers motto as well.

The USCG HITRON Sniper Unit's motto is "Force From Above"

Semper Paratus is the general coast guard motto, I think. I may be wrong.

  • @MattTrecartin the coast guard motto is Semper Paratus

So others may live is the motto if the Rescue Swimmer

  • @MattTrecartin Semper Paratus is the USCG motto.

  • @MattTrecartin your right it is the rescue swimmers motto

  • @MattTrecartin im pretty sure "So that others may live" is the Air Force Pararescue motto and they do more than swimming =) not tryin to be rude or nothin

  • Comment removed

  • @MattTrecartin It is, but they took that from Pararescue. Nevertheless, they are equally deserving of the right to use that motto

  • @mbc2915 and semper paratus

  • @mbc2915 the Coast Guard rescue swimmers motto yes but USCG motto no

  • @mbc2915 "So others may live" is the USCG Rescue Swimmers motto.

  • This vid would be perfect with the Black Hawk down song by hans zimmer

  • thanks, if I could get the rights to it I'd give it a try

  • Video is very good but can't say much for the music.

  • Thanks. What would you recommend for music? maybe I'll change it up.

I didn't want to put anything with electric guitars and a heavy beat like every other Coastie video out there. I think the current track suites the ominous and often sinister side of the ocean, where these heros work to save lives daily.

  • MattTrecartin: I suppose if you don't care for "HotRock" you could use something original like "Helicopter Rotorwash" and "Surf sounds".

  • I would love to use surf sounds and helicopter rotor sounds and do a full soundscape but I am unable to change the audio at this point. Great idea though!

  • Beautiful video!

  • Coasties ROCK !!!

  • Nice..... my son is in Mobile, AL - I MISS YOU SEAMAN DAWSON... u guys are so very awesome. Thank you for all that you do.

  • awsome camp hatteras im down in oak island bout 3 hours from there!

  • haha nice like how you fit the motto in there and thanks for the help

  • I've always wanted to serve in the military. I've always thought that I'd go into that Army but lately I've been thinking about the Coast Guard.

This problably sounds stupid but if I'm commissioned as an officer, do I get to go on the '47 MLB?

  • No you don't.

  • no i think the 110 foot cutter is the smallest craft commanded by a commisioned officer, from what ive heard. even the 87 footers dont have officers.

  • 87 footers have LTJG on board or a Masterchief

  • Allow me to make a correction there, The 87 fleet is split some are skippered by Senior Chiefs and Master Chiefs, some are skippered by LTJG's

  • Go ICE

  • OH great Video btw!

    5/5

  • still debating on joining or continue to become a career firefighter in this crap economy.. but coasties are sooooooo under rated because people thing they dont fight during war time, truth is they do they are now and you are part of the troops over seas also USCG is the only branch that can say they are activly doing their jobs 24/7 365 a year from August 4 1790 till the oceans and lakes dry up. Semper Paratus

  • well, just so you know all the branches have firefighters. i was one before enlisting, now im a fire fighter in the US Air Force

  • MooseTrooper30: Thanks for that comment! Your still young, ever considered the reserves? Men & women with good attitudes and career backgrounds are always needed in the reserves.

  • Join Moose!

If you still have some doubts then just go reserves for now!

    I PROMISE YOU,

    YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT!

  • really no doubts just hoping i pass medically i have some back issues now so praying that i can get a waiver if they try to hold it on me

  • Back issues, if they aren't deadly then you should be fine. I have a knee injury from a recent landing trip but physically it hasn't effected anything (that I know of). My father is in the Coast Guard (Just retired) - He was a CWO (Chief Warrant Officer). If you need any help, let me know. I'm always ready.

  • I went into the service (Coast guard), two weeks after I turned 17. They used to say you had to be over six feet to join. That way if the ship sank, you could walk ashore. They were kidding of course. The best single decision I ever made, aside from my wife. who is standing over my shoulder as I type this.

  • Thanks for the great comments!

  • Jim275: That wife comment was probably the safest thing you said writing your blo.

  • lol and thanks

  • Brother is in the Coast Guard, Hoping to go in myself, Semper Paratus!

  • Another "Tidy Bowl Puddle Pirate" and damn proud of it. USCG 1972-1976. Semper Paratus !

  • 23 year retired vet, 17 with the Coast Guard, proud to be a SARDOG. Absolutely the best decision I ever made. There is so much honor and pride in this service. We save lives......literally

  • Hey Send me a message....I'm really interested in SAR

  • While in Viet Nam the Coasties had their bouy tenders and patrol boats and they took action just like the Navy River Rats. They will allways be "Brothers in arms." to me and woe to any whom dissagree with me, Warchild!

    RVN 70-72

  • Beautiful video (Cape Hatteras and Pamilco Sound are beautiful areas, nice sailing, now nice kiting . . . And the USCG are fine all weather sailors (shallow water sailors, hmmm . . . USCG Healy . . and now the USCG Bertholf among the fine cutters) I think Navy personnel are mildly jealous as they do not have boats as rugged as motor lifeboats . . :) Semper Paratus :)

  • USCG is #1. We are always ready! Served for 8 years. Love the Coasties!

  • Man that was freaky! Semper Paratus ! Always ready for who knows what! I remember sailing into the devils triangle while on board the cutter Papaw. Weird things happened!

  • Hi MacGirvan. I stood mid-watch lookout on the Papaw in the bermuda triangle during the Haitian Boatlift ops. Creepy good fun.

Snuck up on the other lookouts at night for kicks. Also hid in a body bag in the refer and scared the cook when he came in for veggies.

  • They used to say that you had to be over six feet tall to get into the Coast Guard. That way, If the ship sank, you could still walk ashore. Hey I did seven great years, running patrol and lifeboats on both coasts. We hed our moments but, we never had to walk ashore. Great place to spend your service time. Semper Paratus.

  • As a fan of the USCG i have to notice, this is the most impressive clip.

No blind glorification, just a good snapshoot with impressive sound.

  • Matt, sorry about the multiple posts, I did not think that my post got through.

    R.

  • Matt, thank you for the post. As a very proud member of USCG Aux, I can say there are no better seamen that USCG. We have the very best chopper rescue pilots and rescue swimmers in the wold.

    Respect always.

    Robert

  • Matt, thanks for the post. As a Navy man we called the USCG shallow water fishermen. But as

a very proud member of USCG Aux, and a great fried of RADML Paul J, Pluta, I must say, there are no finer helicopter pilots or rescue swimmers in the world. You have to go out, you do not have to come back

    Robert

  • As a Navy man, we used to call the Coasties shallow water fishermen in good jest. As a proud member of the USCG Aux. services, I still serve my country after 24 1/2 year in law enforcement. let me please say one thing now, the USCG has the very best, and bravest members in the world. Their motto is, you have to go out, you do not have to come back smallest service ever.

    Much respect to all mariners.

    Robert

  • When I was aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Acushnet in Gulfport Ms. in the mid 80's I remember we were called puddle jumpers buy the squids and the Jar heads. We were also called shallow water sailors. Those titles really crack me up! Semper Paratus!

  • Now they call us puddle pirates :-)

  • Come to think of it I remember being called puddle pirates as well. May you have Fair winds and following seas! Semper Paratus!

  • I met a WW2 Coast Guard Vet the other day and he told me the other services called them the Hooligan Navy! That guy had some great story's to tell!

  • My husband gets called a puddle pirate all the time,as do I for just being married to him. Guess it doesn't help that we live on a NAVY base. Stupid squids! lol God Bless all of our men and women in the service

  • nice music

  • did not see this before. wow great! i love helicopters!!!!

  • Thanks man. I threw this together with some footage I shot in 2000. Shot on a sony pd150.
