i find those lights interesting. the metal rings around the bulb i'm guessing are to protect the bulb from getting smashed if a prop falls onto it.

else i would imagine they are to keep someone from burning their hand is they touched it on accident. the only downside with that theory is that metal is a great heat conductor and would possibly heat up to match the bulb, seeing as it's so close.
