I love how Liam changes 'Babe' to 'Shane.' It's the most beautiful interpretation of Shane's poetry I've ever heard!!! Shane then sings The Parting Glass. I love seeing Shane with the Irish greats, same as I love it when Billy Joe is recognized & acknowledged. Great poets should be acknowledged & celebrated--poetry is a medium of the people!!! The educated elite would patent it & dole it out in self-righteous crumbs if they could!!! Perhaps they are even working on yokes & bridles for us. . .
Still hard to believe he is gone! Where is the next Liam Clancy? He won't be auditioning for this years X Factor! Talent? Do they know the meaning of the word? Watch this video & they may get it!!! We miss you Liam!!!
This is one of my favorite musical moments of all time. I saw the Pogues and Shane at the 9:30 club last month. Shane sang incredibly. RIP Liam Clancy, one of the greatest voices ever heard. This is so brilliant. Thanks to whoever made this excellent recording.
Wow it is so great to be Irish, No other Nation can Compare to us, we have a Shite economy but the good and great in all that makes us Irish Gives us a Unique abiltiy to give the World a few minutes of what being Irish is all about, Proud to be sure..
@DwnAszPunk Don't know about whether he wrote more for the Clancy's, but Christy Moore has covered at least 3 of his songs (Fairytale, Pair of brown Eyes and Aisling). He released Aisling before Shane did.
@christkiller08 this is an homage to the songwriter. Are you that fucking stupid? Liam Clancy is an Irish legend, who's paying respect to the great shane mcgowan. Maybe I could kick you in your ugly fucking teeth in to knock some sense into you.
Love this song and Liam is brilliant singing it, just a pity the Clancy brothers did not get to sing it together. Well done Shane McGownan for writing such a great song for the Clancy brothers RIP to all of them.
God rest your soul Liam. I saw you in 2007 sitting in Starbucks with your daughter and your wife. You came over to me to say hello. It brought back so many memories of being little listening to those old crackling Columbia records. Thank you.
poor Liam. I wonder did he know he wouldn't be with us for much longer during this performance on account of his illness. he seems so sad, old, at peace and reflective in this video
Pure heaven, the greatest ballad singer singing a song wrote by the greatest ever song writer. long live shane and liam, cant wait for the pogues in the olympia dublin this saturday night
i didn't realize that shane had written this for someone else, but i think it's actually good that shane recorded this first, because it's very personal to him, and his childhood...it's a beautiful song...and i love it....
Iv been a macgowan worshipper for about 15 yrs now, his songs have shaped my life and his lyrics mean so much to me! More than that my children now live in tipperary, about 5 miles from carney!....listening to that reduced me to tears...long live shane xx
He's singing Shane because Shane in there and comes on and sings a couple of songs next.....Shane Mcgowan is a legend best song writer ever and what a version Liam does of this has to be our best Ballad singer ever
oh rigth srry i have the dvd anyway and i know he comes on but liam said wat i said at a concert i went to in cork in may09 so i will take wat he said for the truth
I only heard this song in May when Liam did an interview on Irish radio. This is a beautiful song, but only only made more poignant for me because I know some of the places that Shane McGowan refers to here. Shane's mother is from Carney and he used to spend his summers there with a cousin of mine. "The cross of Finnoe" is only a mile from my grandmother's house where I spent many a summer holiday!
must have heard the original a million times and never really listened.maybe it takes a cover to realise what a song it was.wonderful,powerful,moving.thanks so much for posting
One of the most beautiful songs of all time. Great to see Liam has recorded it at last! It's stupid to laugh and it's useless to bawl about a rusty tin can and an old hurling ball..
shane forever, watched the pogues last nite fukin amazing. god bless the one and only shane macgowan - an absolute genius of a poet - underrated as fuck, hes only remembered 4 farytale of new york by most people.
Well said fishf8z! Luckily, we know better.. Shane at his best is probably the best songwriter ever. Who else has wrote songs as mindblowingly beautiful as this? Shane MacGowan forever!
This song by The Pogues its my favorite i just know it,i have listen to it almost everyday since March 20th, i always sing it when im drinking, love it dearly, pure genius, Shane voice is very diferent from any other song he sung,i love how it is romantic,slow,happy-sounding and bit melancholic at the end mate,to me its the ultimate irish song. TIMELESSS Im not even irish, im Mexican: Irlanda para Siempre!!
