@Xolette Stock whips have a long handle but a very loose connection between the handle and thong. To me they act and perform like Target Bullwhips. Just like bullwhips but longer handle. Usually over 12".

@Xolette Well...they are cow whips:) Basically cow whips are a cheaper version of Australian stock whips. They are very similar in their construction but the thong of a stockwhip is held on to the handle by two keepers interlocking together, where as a cow whip has two tassles comming off the lash that get tied into a cup in the handle base:) Either way, they both crack well and I like both.:) Good cracking by the way!

I remember when I was like 12 years old my friend had a swimming pool and after swimming all day, we would whip each other with wet towels just to see if we could take the pain LOL. It's cool that your sister can handle your abuse. My brother would take it too personal. Is it possible to whip an over head tree branch and swing from it? Is it also possible to whip around a leg to pull and make them fall?

@sirg31 A stunt woman would be fun, however I have a habbit of screaming when things don't even hurt. :) A 12 foot seems way too long, at least for me. 3 feet... you have to be pretty fast to crack, but there's a lot of double whip routines you can do with a shorter whip.

@TuberGreg Nope-- although a whip cracking can sound like a gunshot. And all my weapons are legal, as long as I don't go run outside my house with them. :)

@Xolette I'm into medieval swords myself. The closest I've come into a "brush with the law" is when I was rolling through a roadblock and I had my swords in the back seat.

Officer: "Are tho's real swords?"

Me: "Yep"

Officer "No, like, not the kind you buy at a flea market"

Me: "1065 carbon steel tempered up to about 55 HRC"

Then he had a look on his face that was a mix between 'I really want to look at them some more' and 'I should probably keep this line of cars moving'

btw would you say that using a whip is a practical self defense tool? lets say against someone wielding a knife?

@v8einstein Good question! Actually, I think it's filipinos who would use whips as a actual weapons, but they were short (3') with sharp things on the cracker, like fish hooks. But you can also treat a whip as a soft weapon-- choke someone out, take them down, even get rid of a knife (althoug, it'd be a high skill, high risk move)... lots of cool things you can do, especially if it's a stock whip with a big wooden handles at the end. My handle's are 18" like escrima sticks.

@v8einstein Lengthy because my instructor advised me that 18" handles would be like escrima sticks-- I'd could use the handles as weapons if I ever had to flip my whip over and use it in that manner. Other than that, 16" is the recommended length (I believe) for handles on stock whips. I'd take a whip to a bolo because of the length. You could easily get out of your bolo attacker's range with a whip.

@v8einstein I think a Sjambok would work better. They are a very stiff whip/prod you can get modern ones made from synthetic material.

@colddrake80 thanks for the input! unfortunately i don't think teddy roosevelt's theory of carrying around a big stick, or a stiff/flexible (stiflexible?) one made out of hippo hide for that matter ^_^, would be applicable in an urban setting. i dunno, maybe it's just me, but i can't see the sjambok being applied in a defensive manner fast enough. i thought maybe the whip because it's small enough and fast enough but meh, i still see someone with a knife closing the gap too fast

@v8einstein That's the problem with whips. They are long and call for a lot of room to use effectively. You might want to consider a 3 or so foot length of chain with weights on each end. The Japanese used them (Manriki Gusari [sp?]). Also look into clubs. A short one can still offer a lot of protection because they have reach and heft. Problem is a lot of what I'm describing have been branded illegal. So check all local laws and good luck.

@colddrake80 haha the japanese sickle ball and chain, definitely not legal to carry around ahahah. even if it was just the chain and weight, it'll probably be considered nun-chucks where i'm from. if anything, the safest bet to carry around would just be a rock (or 2) in a sock (or 2). ahaha or a cue ball, bar or soap, etc in said sock. and thanks for taking the time to share some insight with me drake and xolette! shalom and be blessed!

@HRxRS I was surprised my whip was actually brushing up against my hair when my twin replayed the footage for me. Really, it's being on the business end of a whip is where it hurts. The only time I've whipped myself consistently is practicing double fast figure 8 cracks, and volleys. It's not too bad really. However, one guy I was showing how to whip didn't wait long enough for me to step back, and he whipped my throat pretty bad. The burn mark lasted a week!
