i dont think this book was worth a series so much as a well made movie, but it will never get made since great stories like these havnt been made since the 80s, and no audience today would want to see this. sad.
To the person asking if this was Bumper's Theme - NO. Henry Mancini's far-superior theme was used only in the 1975 pilot for this series. For reasons I have never heard (price seems like a reasonable guess) it was replaced with this generic 70s cop show theme for the rest of the series. I would LOVE to see someone post that 1975 pilot. I can't find it ANYWHERE.
OK, so I'm fat. I don't like the word obese. I'm also retired. You won't see the likes of me walking the beat anymore. We aren't supposed to make friends on the street anymore, might be on the take. We can't give your kid a break and get him to provide info to us. That has to go through the DA's office. Yeah right . With all the EEOC stuff, what you get now is a bunch of short skinny kids that spray, tase or shoot at the first sign of trouble. They don't know how to reason or use their hands.
Joseph Wambaugh's book "The Blue Knight" is a cracking good read. Unlike the George Kennedy or Bill Holden portrayals, Bumper Morgan was not so much a hero as a protagonist. And he wasn't just a little chubby-- he was obese. A much more interesting character.
I am surprised that Joseph Wambaugh isn't mentioned in the opening credits. I read "The New Centurions" Wow, did he make LAPD mad and it impaired his career. His police career, that is. He struck down Reed and Malloy in the line of duty.
@wkat950 I don't think it was so much Malloy and Reed he struck down, I think it was Jack Webb he was striking out against. On the other hand, Webb didn't want to step on toes by depicting LAPD brass politics or brass apathy towards the line officer's daily plight.
I liked the opening of "The Blue Knight" video clip. Entertainer George Kennedy did a fine job portraying the role of a peace officer walking the beat in 1975 Los Angeles. A Terrific 5!! Lorimar should have returned that program in the 1981-1982 Television Season.
Just read the novel by Joseph Wambaugh, and pictured George Kennedy throughout, of course. I agree with code2high ... we need this breed of cop today -- just so long as he isn't angry at me. Man, look at the way he twirls that nightstick!
@BumperMorgan Yeah, my old man came from this era. They sure don't make cops like they used to. But goddamn, I would not want to have their job in this society today.

Nice to see when the skyscrapers of downtown Los Angeles were new and generally filled. So many of those companies are now gone.

Nice, the good ole days when cops got out and walk the streets to patrol rather than to a car to give a ticket.

I remember the miniseries with William Holden as Bumper Morgan. Does anyone know if that's available on DVD or Blu-Ray?

I second the notion. "The Blue Knight" should have been brought back in the 1981-1982 Television Season on CBS. Need We Say More!!
