@xanderabstract I think they put lights into the tank in advance (from down) and maybe already turned the other lights really off while shooting. That would prevent reflection and also afterwards turning the contrast up and shadows darker really makes it harder to see where the 'water' is and the rough cut edges where footage of the alley and dove is pasted in. Atleast, that's what I think.

My guess is that they used no special effects...

Beth and the boy were propably inside a water tank of some sort...

You can see it from the way her hair moves...

And in some cases they rewinded some scenes

Of course, they changed the lighting and the backround accordingly

So, no special effects...just pure water!

Evanescence is not in the trip hop genre, and lacks alot of emotional arrays that Portishead had and has brought to the table.
