The number of civilians that have gone up in this plane may only number in the few 10's, if that. You are thinking about the 1960s when the U-2s had to directly fly over sovereign territory in order to utilise their recon cameras. The later variant U-2s have slant sensors able to monitor from international airspace. Still a highly effective recon platform which will eventually be replaced by large UAVs such as the RQ-4 Global Hawk.
British Lightning jets used to fly higher than the U2 at 88,000 feet which scared the crap out of the Americans as they though no plane could fly higher than they could.

@rickyblount2007 according to wikipedia it's cruise speed is 430mph with max speed of 500mph. These are both airspeeds. The speed relative to the ground depends on factors of wind speed and direction. Although it is counter to common sense, I've been taught that altitude has no bearing on groundspeed as truespeed=groundspeed+windspeed as vectors. Hope this helps. =)

@McChuugy not really. The thing is they are still in the earths atmousphere which still has a gravitational force, only its weaker than on the ground. But even if they try to go out of the atmousphere, they'll still be pushed back down to earth. A craft like that needs around 6,000 more thrust to break through the atmousphere.
@bud467 Todays U-2 is nothing like the one flowen by Gary Powers that was shot down. He was in a U-2C, the aircraft in the viedo is a U-2S that came out in the late 80's. The current U2 has nearly twice the wingspan and power of the U-2C. The current U-2, according to the USAF, is the highest flying plane in the inventory.

The Russians have been working on developing workable anti-aircraft missiles since the '50s. If anything, they were very paranoid about American air superiority. They finally came up with something that could shoot down U-2 in the form of SA-2 (NATO designation), although its overall battlefield record is actually rather dismal. (SA-2s were also used a lot during Vietnam War but was not terribly effective.)

oh shit thats right its called the blackbird.... i though it was something else... but dude the cameras under that thing have some masive friggin resolution to see from friggin that high up down to the ground to get a clear picture! if you go to the right sight or to a museum u can see em i did its amazingly clear!
