  • I just love Toradze's performance of the Prokofiev 3d! I am happy to hear every single note of it clearly. And so dynamic. I find the tempo great. Not too slow, not too fast. Bravo!!!

  • ...interesting to see all these distinguished commentators slugging it out over the "best" Prokofiev...I would say, this guy certainly knows how to put on a spectacle...how is Paavo Jarvi related to the other Jarvi?...

  • I do not like his interpretation... I prefer Horacio Gutierrez.

  • @IolanaIolas --- yes indeed, Gutierrez is awesome at this and the second - i bought the CD after listening on youtube ... fantastic

  • I do not like...... the interpretation is boring, is not moving so slow with that time is also very overacted

no me gusta ....la interpretación es aburrida, no es emcionante con ese tiempo tan lento además me parece muy sobreactuado

  • I cannot understand all the criticism of tempo and pace here. Since when is playing Prokofiev (or anyone else) all about speed?!?!?!? Yes, Aregerich is incredible in this piece. But is there really only one possible satisfying performance?? Toradze says something in this piece that no one else does!!!

For those that are turned off by his sound, have you heard descriptions of Prokofiev's own playing?

  • the tempo complemented perfectly with his body shape...

    fat and clumsy...

But his dynamics and accents on the pieces are absolutely fascinating....

  • Toradze is fascinating to watch - just saw him with Thierry Fischer on Prokofiev 1st here - but tempos slow. Paavo Jarvi - whenever will anything he does these days come to any kind of life (even if unrecognizable)? NHK plays decently - but unintentionally funny how bored the Japs look. They deserve so much better on podium than this. To NHK: Invite Toradze back to play this with choice of Stenz, Volkov, T. Fischer, Nott, Edward Gardner, Metzmacher.

    Thank you for posting this.

  • The beginning was pretty boring and the dramatic jerks he does aren't helping with his playing. He looks healthy enough to bang the life out of a piano without having to use his whole body.

  • I heard very different things of him. Once I heard a Prokofiev 2 that sounded like he had gone mad. Accents on impossible places, and ugly ffff's.....but he maybe a genius on good days!

  • Me gusta más la versión de Pompa Baldi

  • nelia!!!:(((

  • H Is GREAT!! BRAVO TORADZE!!!

  • I understand that this concerto can be run into speed demon antics but this is too slow to me. It lacks force and drive.

  • for goodness sake, hasn't anyone martha argerich play it!!!???? hers is the best by far!!!!

  • He looks like a pumpkin :D Good job!

  • the last two minutes is just mind blowing

  • I love watching any pianist play this concerto. When I play it, I cannot tell what it looks like, except from a video after the fact. Also a good one is the Byron Janis with Kondrashin.

  • At 4:12 I thought the dude was gonna cry! Yikes. Well, I still prefer the Kapell recording. The orchestra here is not very good and Toradze knows it-he's pissed!

  • good observation.

  • William Kapell's recording with Dallas/Dorati remains my favorite and is pianistically without peer.

  • helllll yeaaaa tha was GREAt!! idont care wat u guys say

  • Just look at that shining BULGING cranium!

This stout fellow is on a high protein diet I am sure!He played the ever living sh*t out of that piano.

Hooray for Prokofiev for composing it and stubs who played it like it was his own!

  • This is an AWFUL approach - so brutal! My goodness! His sound is so lacking in variety, and as for the orchestra trying to play Russian music - heaven preserve us!

  • he just sounds like he's ploughing through it, and can't wait to get to the end. it's too heavy and lumpy. bad job mate

  • bleah!

  • I think Toradzes interpretations of Prokofievs concertos are the best. This is quite slow but keep in mind its not presto.

Still I prefer the recording with Gergiev.

  • Can this man play the third movement any SLOWER?

  • He plays this concerto like Van Cliburn, but he sounds, unfortunately, a bit amateurish in parts, whereas Cliburn is a pro all the way through.

  • Warm-blooded pianist playing with a cold orchestra.

  • resembles Sokolov

    lol

  • Have you heard his Prokoviev 2?

  • thank god he took it at a reasonable tempo.

i love argerich's performance, but it's just too fast.

though the begininning was a little slow, once it sped up by the 32 note passage, it was perfect tempo.

did anyone else not see a tempo change at the poco piu mosso? cuz i didn't.

i like that he used pedal, but less and less deeply would be nice. you don't have to floor it to use the pedal! it has many levels.

    overall very good techinically!

  • ThanQ for posting it!

I went to this concert. His performance was REALLY GREAT!! The hall was rang wiz the sound of amazement when just the 1st mov was finished.

But I missed to watch it on TV..

I'm waitin that anybody's postin the 1st and

    2nd movs as well.

  • Toradze is The GREATEST!!!!

  • absoluetly , he plays prokofiev superb

better than argerich , his mood is geniues .......

i am big fan of toradze , what about you?

  • Me tooo I just love him! <3

  • Unlike most of living superstar pianists. Toradze has a great musicianship This is a magnificent performance. Thank you for posting.

  • Hmmm. Slow section was very good. However, the ending I wasnt impressed with. He cheated on the fast sextuplet seconds, and you constantly hear him slamming on the pedal. Im not saying he is making mistakes, but he sounds very haphazard. Some notes will be very much louder than others around, which sounds clumsy.

  • wow he's a great pianist. this movement, actually this whole concerto, is very technically and musically challenging

  • He's very ham-handed at 4:00 when the "walking speed theme appears and marked "piano" by Prokofiev but "slamed down" as "forte" by Toradze. He sounds like he's playing as an entrant in the Meriwether Post Piano Competition.

  • I've heard him play other things, all slow. He and Friedrich Vuhrer must be close friends. I really wonder if he's capable of any more speed, not that I'm looking for speed. This concerto has been rushed too many times.

  • as interesting as this interpretation is i don't believe it is very good. The man misses the point of the whole thing. Here prokofiev is showing his extraordinary ability to compose in a high contrapuntal stylea and this man is bluring it all together so that we cannot here the real coutnerpoint. Also it is annoying that i can hear him bang on the pedal through a lot of this concerto. He needs to let the pedal go and make his staccatos as short as possible. His slow section is wonderful though!

  • Masterful. I don't care about speed, The Prokofiev 3rd is hard at a tempo of six beats per minute! You are awesome, thanks for the post!

  • you are right!!!!

  • I DO wish he'd get on with it!

  • yes = that's all that needs to be said

  • Great performance! Maybe a little too much stretching of tempo in the middle section, but nonetheless, absolute stellar playing from Maestro Toradze, not to mention great work from Paavo and the NHK Orchestra!
