Oregon , Washington both you can use even the 223 for dear and many use AR15,s now days for deer they work so well kept with in the range of the 223 and good bullets it kills deer like lightning .

Use the 22-250 with heavy bullets like 60 grain and up it is amazing killer on deer.

personally to answer ruger or remington, id go with remington, are a simple barrel and action and you can do a little bit more as far as building a rifle by yourself, however any gun can be a good gun with the right gunsmith, its all personal preference, i have found the remington to be a smoother more solid gun, but its all up to you and what you want.

Yeah, I prefer the lazy way out. I shoot a .300 Win Mag so I don't have to get that close. It's way easier to just bust them from a couple hundred yards away and not worry about it.

How is that "not the most ethical shot"? The faster the deer dies the less pain it goes through. A solid brain cavity shot is by far the most "ethical" shot you can make. It usually isn't done becuase it is a smaller target and a good "vital" shot will kill them but it is a larger target so most hunters go for the vitals. Also that won't ruin a trophy. But there's nothing unethical about a head shot. In fact my friend shoots 5.56 NATO and only goes for the head so he can actually kill them
