@snifflesofdeath thank you. I wish that I had Kurt Cobain's guitar playing in the background at the time. Instead I had my sister playing her synthesizer.
i love the beats and their work.. kerouac, ginsberg, synder.. they've created a lot of very influental stuff. However i look at it though, Burroughs is kind of a creep.. lookin at the story of his life... just a wierd creepy kinda guy.
There's no delicacy here. Kurt sounds like he's trying to imitate bombs and war. It doesn't feel a part of the story. It doesn't create a scene for the story. It's completely disconnected from the story. It sounds like boring, noisy drivel in the background to what is already a boring story. Kurt's not doing anything groundbreaking or new here. Anyone saying that, clearly isn't familiar with avant-garde music. In fact it sounds like a poor attempt at imitating that vein of music.
@PorcupineFloyd68 thanks for the generalization. i do have my own opinions if that is what are trying to say. but im not gonna lie...as far as this type of collaboration go, i do not really know what is good or not. i came over it. i like their individual work, so i happened to find this collaboration interesting. nothing wrong with that.
@PorcupineFloyd68 if your so in tune to avant garde then clearly you know that having a rapport for a certain author or musician helps the connection.
So in saying that, your either not a huge fan of either or your a huge fan of burroughs. Don't nay say, because what I gain personally out of this is the noise. The noise better fits my re-imagining of edgar allen poe poems and/or scary stories to tell in the dark stories or urban legends.
@odiumimbues I don't treat avant garde any differently than other genres of art. If I like it, I like it. Simple as that. Don't really care who the artist is.

And, sorry. I'm not really following what you're saying about the noise. Don't nay say what?

So you might as well be in the middle of a war field saying you hate guns, or at mcdonalds complaining about fast food. Get what im saying? there are smarter and more productive things to do than to feed an unproductive opinion without a productive alternative.

@odiumimbues Yes, you were right. No one could say I'm a fan of either.
Again, I'm sorry. But, I don't understand what you're getting at with the analogies. Am I to be expected to love anything avant-garde just because I love some?...is that it?
You say my opinion is unproductive, but if I had simply said "Wow this is great!", nothing would be thought of it - though it's a much less "productive" critique. I didn't simply state, this is garbage. I explained why I thought so.
@odiumimbues And, you can't really say I'm wrong about it being boring. With opinions, one can say as they please. If it's not a bore to you, then so be it. But, I am right from my perspective, which is just as much reality as your perspective is to you.
By your thought, there is no such thing as a productive opinion, because there will be disagreeing on everything.
@odiumimbues And, I don't have to provide a productive alternative. The piece is what it is, and I'll critique based on what I think of it. Meaning he just randomly made noise on his guitar sliding and chuga chugging and sustaining notes, please people dont be so impressed by this, i mean the poem is great, but the music, you can do, please try and rememeber that. you are very capable of doing exactly this!
Great stuff, thanks for posting. Anyone understand the use of severed legs in Burroughs work though? He mentions something similar in the junkys christmas. Anyway, cheers.
@bong4200000 it is my belief hitler had a twin brother who invented the things more potent than cocaine. for this they made a formaldehyde centaur, and sent his legs to south america, and the horse's head to Italy, the black arabian horse's head. this is the horse's head in the godfather and this buroughs routine, mexican leather? they belonged to a man with dark skin, likethe native anticoke, burroughs hated cocaine, and hitler's twin, deserved to die. this is all theory, but it makes sense
could this have something to do with his role in "drugstore cowboy"? seems similar, maybe inspired. he played a priest in that movie with a drug addiction.

well, not everything that kurt cobain did was a masterpiece, i think this is not, but is always interesting listen to a collaboration between artists like burroughs-cobain. this is at least effective. in my opinion.
THE PEDAL KURT IS USING IS AN OLD ELECTRO HARMONIX ECHO FLAANGER PEDAL. AND NO BIGRUSSTHEFUSS, YOU ARE AN IDIOT. KURT IS COMPLETELY IN TUNE TO THE SPIRIT AND VIBE OF WHATEVER'S HAPPENING HERE. none of us guitarists could do a better job.kurt had a gift
@roejogan8 i dont think so. you dont even really know whats going on here. but i know anybody even a beginner guitar player who has been playing for 3 months, could do this with a loud amp, and a couple noise boxes
@Bigrusssthefuss he plays silent night to fit the christmas theme of the words for god sake. i'm willing to bet the majority of what he's playing is improvised. he's good at it. i love what he plays on this. sure it would be possible to play something similar, but to think of the idea to play in that style? it's pretty cool man. it suits the vibe big time. i guess we're all capable of writing as cool as william too right? lol.
@roejogan8 sure you are. But that is a whole different story all together. Listen dude, you obviously really like this and im not saying thats bad, i really enjoy it too! I really enjoy the story alot and the noise. All I am saying is that, I think because Kurt Cobain did this, its appreciated more. If it was anonymous, I bet it wouldnt get nearly 90% of the worth thats being thrown at it. Think about it! Anyway, I am sorry if you feel i was being too blunt and crass. Take Care R.I.P KDC and WSB
@flaksucks not sure i understand. I forget my passwords all the time, especially to my emails, so password recovery is nearly impossible for me, so because of that,i have to creat new accounts, im on this thing in like 30 different names!
@roejogan8 Kurt was a heroin infused junkie who couldn't play worth a shit. Anybody can make noise like a retard. Ask him to play an arpeggio and he'd have to shoot up just to say the word arpeggio.
william was also a heroin infused junkie. doesn't mean they're not talented. kurt did pretty well for himself for not being able to play worth a shit. i guess that proves you don't need to have perfect chops to make music that connects with MANY people. actually anybody can strum a few c,f, and g chords "like a retard". kurt is trying something DIFFERENT here. just 'cause it's atonal doesn't mean it's bad, you tweaker. arpeggio? the intro to heart shaped box is arpeggiated,, so there, stupid.
I loved this collaboration then, and I love it now. Kurt Cobain, tearing up the guitar when it mattered. Not much in the way of chart topping bravado here- just delicate, sensitive and passionate playing. This is Cobain at his most soulful and experimental. It was personal. One of Kurt Cobain's literary heros revealing a tale of woe and loss while Cobain hammers it out.
Yeah man! Regardless of what his personal life was like, Cobain was a genius... especially with heavy guitar effects. Personally, I think Kurt got the majority of his influence from the legendary King Buzzo and The Melvins.
I don't agree with "majority"... but i do with The Melvins being one of his influences... I think Pixies are one of the most influential bands in cobain's music and guitar style...
@Plot082 When KC wrote "smells like teen spirit" he said he was essentially trying to write a pixies song. He has also eluded to in several interviews that the pixies were indeed his main influence...so, yeah, you're right. And for the record, the pixies are one of the all-time great, kick-ass, rock bands- frank black and the catholics are amazing, too, but in a different way.
Yeah sure, i bet you can do something like Kurt. Better safe your opinions, do your distortion, and then show it. Meanwhile, be quiet and hear William speaking or go get laid.
@theledzeppguy Sonic Youth? Are you just saying that because Kurt is making cathartic noise with his guitar? I'm a huge sonic youth fan, and to me, this sounds nothing like what Lee and Thurston do.
Kurt Cobain wasn't a 'great guitarist' in the John Petrucci or Steve Vai sense, but in his playing there's so much realistic emotion that I can't find in about 90% of the shredders I've heard.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
are you a musician? I assume you are.
son, i think you could do just as well if given the equipment and time. All kurt was doing was making noise, thats easy to do, and to be honest, it wasnt easy on the ears, there were several parts where i thought, wow this is interesting, and others where i thought sounds like my 4 year old nephew trying to mimmick what he thinks is playing guitar. I dont want you to think im making fun cuz im not, i just think you can do as good or better. think about it
@WWAAK I've been playing guitar for most of my life, and honestly- anyone can learn to shred with enough practice. On the other hand, there is no amount of practice that will enable someone to play like Kurt. Django Reinhardt anyone? Check out Joscho Stephan, he has technical skills that match anyone alive and feeling like no one else...he picked up where Django left off- he is amazing to watch.
I could do without the wailing noise in the background drowning out what Burroughs was saying. But then I don't have clinical depression (at the moment) so I'm not in the right mood for it, perhaps.
His style of playing was basically punk rock, what made his songwriting stand out was the mix of punk riffs/solos and pop hooks. when nirvana was starting out hair metal bands like van halen were on MTV wanking the shit out of their guitars, this kind of "treatment" was a counter against that. anyone can practice and be van halen eventually, it's just some people don't want to be.
so i'm feeble minded for liking kurt cobain's music? you sound like one of those bitter types who hate any form of success because you never made it and never will. kurt was a sloppy guitarist but he was about as far from average as you can get. btw, for you to claim to be better than kurt is arrogance and not fact.
Cobains guitaring is attrocious. Truly uninspired noise. MAkes you want to hit him..... with the guitar. Cobain killed the guitar solo and replaced it with this horseshit. Cobain couldn't play for shit. They should have banned him from picking up a guitar to play a solo. Listen to Hendrix or Billy Corgan play with feedback. THey were talented guitarists. Cobain was a Junkie and plays guitar like one.
hair enough, and yes, compared to Hendrix, Jimi Page and Frank Zappa, he wasn't amazing, but his music was mainstream music at the time, and most of the time, mainstream music isn't musically technical.
your arrogance sickens me, i'm interested to know what goes through your brain when you claim to be a better guitarist than cobain. he wrote classic riffs and was a master of the sleazy, feedback drenched solo, he also inspired millions and changed rock music. what have you done?, apart from claiming to be better than him on youtube?

If it was anonymous, I bet it wouldnt get nearly 90% of the worth thats being thrown at it. Think about it! Anyway, I am sorry if you feel i was being too blunt and crass. Take Care R.I.P KDC and WSB

@roejogan8 Kurt was a heroin infused junkie who couldn't play worth a shit. Anybody can make noise like a retard. Ask him to play an arpeggio and he'd have to shoot up just to say the word arpeggio.
OurGreatestAdventure 11 months ago
william was also a heroin infused junkie. doesn't mean they're not talented. kurt did pretty well for himself for not being able to play worth a shit. i guess that proves you don't need to have perfect chops to make music that connects with MANY people. actually anybody can strum a few c,f, and g chords "like a retard". kurt is trying something DIFFERENT here. just 'cause it's atonal doesn't mean it's bad, you tweaker. arpeggio? the intro to heart shaped box is arpeggiated,, so there, stupid.
roejogan8 11 months ago
@roejogan8
BEAUTY.
TheRyanReilly 10 months ago
@roejogan8 He is just mad because once again the forces of the universe prove that intelligence and dumbness creates laughter.
Or in this case, soul beats technicality mumbo jumbo with no feelings. He probably learned guitar and is feeling empty so he attacks the source.

What do you need to do those guitar effects?
Plot082 2 years ago 2
The hands of Kurt Cobain himself!
UNSUNGBAND 2 years ago 3
Damn it... You're Right!
Plot082 2 years ago
Yeah man! Regardless of what his personal life was like, Cobain was a genius... especially with heavy guitar effects. Personally, I think Kurt got the majority of his influence from the legendary King Buzzo and The Melvins.
UNSUNGBAND 2 years ago
I don't agree with "majority"... but i do with The Melvins being one of his influences... I think Pixies are one of the most influential bands in cobain's music and guitar style...
Plot082 2 years ago
Absolutely! RIP Kurt D.
UNSUNGBAND 2 years ago
Black Flag, The Melvins, The Stooges, any punk band actually. Sonic Youth etc. There are so many.
DeadKennedysNirvana8 2 years ago
@Plot082 When KC wrote "smells like teen spirit" he said he was essentially trying to write a pixies song. He has also eluded to in several interviews that the pixies were indeed his main influence...so, yeah, you're right. And for the record, the pixies are one of the all-time great, kick-ass, rock bands- frank black and the catholics are amazing, too, but in a different way.

I love Burroughs and Cobain, but I must ask-what is this piece of music called? It's very Butthole Surfers-esque. A little Sonic Youth influence too.
theledzeppguy 2 years ago
It's from the album entitled, "The
'Priest' They Called Him."
xXTheShadow1970Xx 2 years ago
@theledzeppguy Sonic Youth? Are you just saying that because Kurt is making cathartic noise with his guitar? I'm a huge sonic youth fan, and to me, this sounds nothing like what Lee and Thurston do.
mphurwitz 1 year ago
Kurt Cobain wasn't a 'great guitarist' in the John Petrucci or Steve Vai sense, but in his playing there's so much realistic emotion that I can't find in about 90% of the shredders I've heard.

are you a musician? I assume you are.
son, i think you could do just as well if given the equipment and time. All kurt was doing was making noise, thats easy to do, and to be honest, it wasnt easy on the ears, there were several parts where i thought, wow this is interesting, and others where i thought sounds like my 4 year old nephew trying to mimmick what he thinks is playing guitar. I dont want you to think im making fun cuz im not, i just think you can do as good or better. think about it
bigrussthefusss 2 years ago
maybe all things someone can do with time and resources (like equipments) another guy can do too.
whatever, people with good skills aren't god's or sumething like that but they are just admirable.
TheMaiminMatty 2 years ago
@WWAAK I've been playing guitar for most of my life, and honestly- anyone can learn to shred with enough practice. On the other hand, there is no amount of practice that will enable someone to play like Kurt. Django Reinhardt anyone? Check out Joscho Stephan, he has technical skills that match anyone alive and feeling like no one else...he picked up where Django left off- he is amazing to watch.

he didnt want any juvenile connections, bad news in any language. The Priest had had enough bad news in his life.

I could do without the wailing noise in the background drowning out what Burroughs was saying. But then I don't have clinical depression (at the moment) so I'm not in the right mood for it, perhaps.

xxzzxx99 2 years ago

Cobain was a Junkie and plays guitar like one.
xxzzxx99 3 years ago
are you better than him?

hair enough, and yes, compared to Hendrix, Jimi Page and Frank Zappa, he wasn't amazing, but his music was mainstream music at the time, and most of the time, mainstream music isn't musically technical.
fudgepackingnerd 3 years ago
your arrogance sickens me, i'm interested to know what goes through your brain when you claim to be a better guitarist than cobain. he wrote classic riffs and was a master of the sleazy, feedback drenched solo, he also inspired millions and changed rock music. what have you done?, apart from claiming to be better than him on youtube?
