When I was a kid and saw this for the first time on tv in Mercury's tribute concert, because I happened to be a Queen fan, I thought they were serious about it and so I became a fan of Spinal tap too.
I'll always think the line-up was a bit of a joke. No Ronnie James Dio? Now there's a man who could've done the songs some justice, regardless of how silly a lot of his 80's songs were! I'll stand by what I said about Axl though - I understand how huge G'n'R is and that it's probably blasphemy to shit on them or something, but Axl is just not a singer. Entertainer, whatever ... but not a singer in the sense that Freddie was.
We don't disagree entirely! You were right about U2, but like I said - at the time, they seemed to just be grabbing a bunch of bands that were huge. Fair enough, it did get a lot of people watching!
I know it's freddie's tribute, but he would have liked them to include some funny stuff, cuz when they're just playing in a serious vein, it's rather lame. (wouldn't you say?)
@GHseanor28 Lols, was trying to find the full clip. His guitar wasnt working and they started telling peeps to hug each other. "you have to be facing each other"
@coooba94 I have the concert recorded from the radio broadcast :) It's a shame they couldn't fit the whole show on VHS - I wouldn't have minded buying a 3-tape set if it meant putting the entire concert on 3 tapes.
I stand corrected and take all i said back. I searched and found out they have incredible tunes. I just don't like the singer's voice in this one, and the bassist doesn't seem to be playing at all. sorry
@titolante Harry Shearer, the bass player is a very talented man, you probably heard him in simpsons doing: Mr. Burns, Waylon Smithers, Ned Flanders, Reverend Timothy Lovejoy, Kent Brockman, Dr. Hibbert, Lenny Leonard, Principal Skinner, Otto Mann and Rainier Wolfcastle. (yes that's all done by the same man)
Legendary! You can see Christopher guest struggling to keep his face straight as his part comes in. Great post. I had this on video for years, havent seen it in a long time.
@titolante Seriously, just watch a little youtube and then go get the film "This is Spinal Tap". You'll find Spinal Tap does a lot of things, but sucking isn't one of them.
It might be satire but it comes from the heart. Rock delivers and here are some stars. Yes, it's them playing so bow down before Nigel Tufnel who won't lick your boots but is quite prepared to be polite and locate you a pair. Fair's fair. Coming next? Tap live last year. Special stuff. Old rockers rule.
Nigels amp crapped out for about ten minutes meaning the rest of the guys had to ad lib to fill time, but once that was fixed, the perfomance was mega!
the top 3 bands at this show were #1 spinal Tap.....#2 ZZ top...and #3 Mr. mister. In that exact order. Metallica were #s 14 and 20 respectively. Or so I have read. And I believe virtually everything I read.
Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon.
Queen - the greatest rock band in the history. Or maybe you have never heard about them. You know only Spinal Tap, and the other 2 bands that had never played in the Freddie Mercury tibute.
Where I come from this was called the "Spianl Tap Tribute Concert" and I thought it was put on specifically to prove once and for all that Spinal Tap is at the pinacle of rocking-out. Are you sure "Queen" were involved? Also Im sure I Nigel is a better guitarist than Roger Taylor.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Look, Queen were not "involved" this concert, they organize it and invites the artists to play there in memory of their vocalist Freddie Mercury. And Roger Taylor is drummer, not guitarist. So, please, stop speaking shits. Your ignorance is not so funny as you think.
Thank you for keeping this track alive. It's an absolute classic. Remember seeing them perform it live at the Tribute concert. Long live Spinal Tap and long may they play at 11.
Muy buena aportaciòn para todos aquellos que amamos a Queen y no habiamos visto esto antes,ya que como bien lo dices, esto no aparece en el video oficial del tributo a Freddie Mercury.

Who is the drummer? Dig the snare tone amongst other things.
What a RUSH this MUST have been for these guys.

It's scary when the fake bands are better than the real ones. Man, I still puke when I think of Axl Rose on that day.

@Zebonka Axl was decent compared to, say... U2. Of all the bands to pay tribute to Freddie, why in the love of smeg did it have to be U-bloody-2!?

Where did the guitarist get that guitar? It has like 8 pick ups stuck together to make 1! Thats awesome.

@kizzie48 I believe that's 3 double-coils. Ace Frehley, Adrian Smith and I think Randy Rhoads used a setup like that. But I'm sure Nigel invented it.
