There is an easier way to change the default word format. Right click the style "Normal" under the "Home" tab. Select "Modify". Make the changes necessary. You can change the name to MLA if you wish. Make sure "New documents based on this template" is selected. If done correctly the box under the Sample Text box sshould read as so: "Font: (Default) Times New Roman, 12 pt, Left, Line spacing: Double, Widow/Orphan control, Style: Quick Style"

The only thing I would add is that if you're formatting your paper on the fly, be sure to check not only for justification changes (centered text moving to left) but also for formatting changes, especially removal of underlining or italicizing for work titles.
