  • I believe in this plant, its something like nothing else. I speak from experience

  • Its amazing they are still trying to directly link cannabis to a serious genetic disease. Yes cannabis might cause schizophrenia to trigger in people who have a disposition for it, its in the very low percentage. As has also been said a million times schizophrenia rates have never gone up while cannabis use has gone up exponentially. Its just the this is the only propaganda governments are left with because all else has been proven futile and schizophrenia is a great term to scare the public.

  • hahahahahahahahaha

  • The 3 people all have a genetic propensity towards schizophrenia, they should not use marijuana, alcohol or ANY kind of drug, including pharmaceuticals, they are defective from birth,

This documentary, while well done as anything starring Mr. Suzuki usually is, was produced with an obvious effort to scare the general public into thinking that marijuana makes your kids schizophrenic, this is not true in any way shape or form, Even Mr' Suzuki's attitude and body language belie his lack of belief.

  • Hmmmmm.... who will I listen to? Educated people who have done research or 30-year-old loser who just got home from the late shift at Denny's and uses tip money to buy pot?

  • @disturbed1104 your brain produces dopamine it also produces a chemical close to dmt when sleep its how dreams happen

  • These people seem a bit young to be using marijuana; that was by far my main complaint associated with it...

  • Of course, the users will defend it, the non- users will be against it...but, what about the people it has hurt? Are they part of the 'propoganda'? I think they are to be commended for coming forward and telling the truth. I have seen the awful effects it has done to people firsthand.

  • I love the quality of comment on here. Its wrong, either because I say it is, or I heard it was wrong somewhere. These people went to some of the top universities in the world, spoke with expert scientists and got both sides of the story, they know what they are talking about.

  • Obviously, this is not going to be an even handed approach to the effects of cannabis and as such has little scientific value...

  • Nothing 'causes' schizophrenia other than genetics. It's a disease that you either have or don't and that appears at the beginning of adulthood. Consciousness altering drugs like cannabis can catalyze the onset of latent schizophrenia but alcohol does too (four times faster). If weed caused schizophrenia wouldn't we have some kind of huge schizophrenia epidemic over the whole world, given how many people smoke cannabis now?

  • @skrattkantarellen Don't we?

  • @BobCindyL No. Schizophrenia is genetic.

  • What they're trying to say is that since we don't know who will for sure develop Schizophrenia, that marijuana may trigger it ealier in life (to those vulnerable) because of the increase in the THC level over the years. Increase in THC triggers the release in the brain, a neurotransmitter called dopamine. Excess dopamine in the brain results in psychosis and, if continually used, may develop into Schizophrenia.

  • @pedrodemellodotnet So true. There was a study saying cognitive functions increased in schizophrenics while under the influence of cannabis. If you think America is all about spreading propoganda then look at the U.K. They ranked cannabis more hazerdous then acid, ecstasy, and solevents(such as glue or paint thinner) to get high off of. The only reason to explain why, is lies such as it causes lung cancer and psychosis. Both of these findings are lies and are outdated!

  • 1 hit on a joint = COMPLETE INSANITY

  • @pedrodemellodotnet the schizophrenics were gonna get schizophrenia even if they did or did not smoke weed

  • all these kids either hallucinated when they smoked or they were predisposed to schizophrenia risk only is increased during adolescence and if someone predisposed but if someone who uses during adolescence and is predisposed to psychosis or schizophrenia cannabis could actually exaggerate problems already associated. If so these people would of gotten schizophrenia if they didn't smoke

  • its hard to believe these doctors and scientist cuz we dont know whos funding this film and they did lie to us before "marijuana causes brain damage" not knowing the way they experimented was suffocating monkeys suffocating 4 minutes=brain damage and now this yes i've had some bad trips when i got too high i just lowered my dosage from a whole blunt to 2 hits every 10 minutes and yes i sometimes talk to myself but its mostly like this "where the fuck are my keys?" but usually they be in my hand

  • I'm disapointed that CBC would have this kind of propaganda..

  • WOW THIS IS RETARDED

  • okay really man is he predisposed to schizophrenia cause weed doesnt cause it he was probably gonna get it anyhow

  • people r surprised that their mental state was changed when they got high? wtf did they think weed did? and the woman who said she felt like she lost her son, thats because weed is taboo and people who want to use it have to b quiet about it. And if the guy didnt like it, he shouldve stopped, its habitual but not an actual physical addiction.

  • If you actually watch the documentary tey have meticulous medical evidence from some of the top universities in the world to back up the fact that there is a link beween marijuana use and schizophrenia, this is not a conspiracy by "the man" to malign a harmless drug.

  • Weed - helping people not give a fuck since. . .

Its not like we need anyone to care about anything.

The world basicaly runs its self.

    No?

I am sure all the retarded ass stoners agreed with me untill this point.

The world doesn't run its self, satan does, and when you ruin you mind with drugs, you are just letting him have it.

  • fucking retards you can't engineer a plant and everybody has smoked weed thats why it looks like it caused the schizophrenia fucking propagandist bs

  • This guy has underlying issues prior to use no doubt. He is skitzo and yells at the tv for fuck sakes. Thats not a side effect of MJ! this is a modern day reefer madness documentary! They film this fucktard, even tho millions of ppl smoke daily without any bad side effects (besides the familys that get destroyed by the injustice system for growing simple medicinal flowers, and the police brutality on innocent protesters)

  • More "Reefer Madness" Cannabis does not make you psychotic. If you are having psychotic episodes while using cannabis then you should stop and seek psychiatric help. It has nothing to do with the cannabis, it's because you are full goose bozo to start with.

  • @thebudreview I agree, they are slandering cannabis even more! These people are dumb LEGALIZE NOT LEGAL LIES!!!!

  • Wow, even for a hack like Suzuki this is atrocious. Incredible to believe this is still the level of dialog amongst seemingly intelligent humans in 2010. Absolutely incredible.

I'm super happy that the gov't subsidizes the CBC with my tax money to generate this content.

  • @musiccalgary Did you actually watch the doc? do you understand the arguments and evidence they have in the doc? do you actually pay a lot of taxes anyway?

  • @ubercomrade In answer to your unrelated questions -- go fuck yourself. Cheers.

  • @musiccalgary I guess you haven't watched it. sigh. its hard to have honest discussions with ignorant 13 year old boys on youtube.

  • @ubercomrade You'd know better than me. Not my area of expertise. You're an extremely poor guesser though so perhaps work on that first. No seriously, you had a 50-50 and blew it. A coin toss has more sense than you. Think about that for a moment Mr. Sagan.

  • maybe. people with these mental disabilities smoke weed because it soothes them....

  • r u fukin kiddin me

  • what a fake documentary lol

post some data about medical studies in which they demonstrate no correlation between mental diseases and weed, not some payed actors who play the stoner role

  • @grasthube Suzuki isn't about to start addressing reality for your benefit.

  • this is crap i have been swmoking weed since i was 14 now im 18 and it has not had any side effects at all i dint go crazy all i do is get high and watch south park that is all weed isint bad for you

  • aaaaaaaaaaand ur a dumb fuck

  • @squirrelrod :

Oh, such an intelligent and well thought out answer!! Perhaps if you spent more time in school learning proper spelling , punctuation and grammar instead of getting high, you could form a more believable response. Or is it too late for you?

  • @saundersdsbn your funny, get a life

  • @squirrelrod it shows

  • this is just a badly cut comercial, watch the show.

too many un educated opinions here get out of school and go learn something.

Better yet get off your computer and get some sunshine. or exercise maybe.

  • there was a demon in your house, smoking the weed made you conciouse of it!!!

  • "Breast and Prostate Cancer cells are also sensitive to Cannabinoid-induced antiproliferation (restrict). Regarding the immune system, low doses of Cannabinoids may enhance cell proliferation (spread), whereas high doses of Cannabinoids (Rick Simpson's Cancer Cure Hemp Oil) usually induce growth arrest or apoptosis (cell death)."

    PMID: 11269508

  • The episode isn't anti-pot. I have a friend who can die from a trace amount of peanut butter, and that's not a reason to ban peanuts. There's a reason groups like NORML have specified ADULT smokers for years, and tried to discourage young people from starting. Anyone whose observed teenage drug/alcohol users and adult drug/alcohol users knows that these things effect younger people differently, not just more, than adults.

  • @Joybuzzard

good words, yes as the immature brain is attempting to mature(teenagers) the worst thing to do is throw a chemical that retards that process into the mix, (wish I kept away when I was 13) then again mary did help me escape my pain

  • @planes3333 Ummm... You mean like prescription drugs?

  • @planes3333

no the one that coats the brain with a layer of THC retarding normal synapse firing. WEED!! Although the suppressent action of cannabis deteriorates as it is detoxified from the body in the young person that time is where the brain is trying to branch out.

  • these kids were prone to schizo because there family had pre dipositioned disorders, they had shizo before they started to smoke and the cannabis helped them catch it quicker

  • Comment removed

  • Respond to this video...I take it you know the family personally?

  • Gee, I thought legalization was just about using it for medical purposes? You mean people want to use it to get high? Say it's not so.

  • It's Reefer Madness all over again!

  • @crazycanadiangoleafs lol no if you knew anything about schizophrenia that it is linked to marijuana not for everyone but for many people

  • dont you just love drugs??? well... i do

  • schizophrenia, is the western medical term for diseases caused by activation and realization of other realities, uncontrolled. marijuana stones are trance states. look up spiritual use of cannabis. cbc, do a doc on that please???

  • Just watched this "documentary" and I've got to say it's scary that this kind of propaganda get's passed off as a subjective documentary! Some of the main problems include:

    a. All of the kid's interviewd started smoking under the age of 16.

    b. All of the kid's had either personal or a family history of mental disorder.

    c. All of the kid's smoked more weed in a day than anyone I've known (one of them claimed to smoke 3 joints a day).

Where does someone get money at that age?

    Parent's!

  • That's right the parents are enabling their kids to smoke more weed in a day than I smoke in a week!

So howcome nobody ever blames the parent's? It's almost as if they have less of an influence on how their children turn out then an inanimate plant?

If your child is abusing or smoking ANYTHING before the age of 16 you as a parent have failed!

Blame the parents not an innocent plant.

  • that's bull man a parent can not be blamed for everything!!! I've known great loving parents who's kids have done horable things! thairs school and frainds and all sorts of outside influences!

  • @spiritualwarfare1 Actually, yes the parents are the one's responsible.

If you as a parent have less effect on a child than their school-friends do, you as a parent have failed! Did you ever hear the phrase "If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you?" well, I'll make the assumption that you haven't.

The fact of the matter is, as a person you are responsible for how you react to peer-presure, and the way you as a person turned out is a reflection on your parents ability to parent.

  • I have been smoking marihuana since before sixteen and certainly mo9re than three joints a day...

Here in Holland we KNOW that only when you have a high probability for mental disease, smoking weed will make it clear...usually between the ages of 30 and forty, mental problems can surface, all marihuana does is make the age at which it will become apparent a bit lower...Mental problems have nothing to do with being different, by the way, almost any mental disorder can be integrated by acceptimg..

  • In Hollnad there is no paranaoia involved with smoking, because it is not illegal, mostly, the extreme cases of hearing voices or 'hallucinating' are caused by the mental stress of keeping the use of weed a secret.

In shamanic societies, mental illness is almost unheard of. Using shamanic substances at the age of mental individuality trains people in understanding the machineries of the mind. This way, the personal experience of reality is accepted, in stead of attempting to adapt to 'reality'

  • @dervishmadwhirler

I disagree, I think drugs effect people differently from individual to individule, the same thing happens when people do dimethyltriptamine, it makes peopel aware of the truth about angels and demons!! (entities,) etc

  • this makes me lol, 3 kids that smoked weed became skitzophrenic. But then theres millions of other kids that smoke weed and turn out fine. Makes me think the the government will do anything to tell ppl how bad weed is.

  • There is a case in Canada, where the son used pot everyday for years, he became schizophrenic, believed his parents were impostors and he murdered both of them.

  • If all you're going to do with your time is smoke weed, it's naturally not going to have the most positive effect on you. And just because weed has become more potent, doesn't mean that it's going to make you "schizophrenic." This is basically an overproduced after-school special.

  • Yeah, you'd probably have to be crazy in the first place to smoke like that. I wonder if these studies considered that?

  • these people are pathetic... its just weed

  • This video makes me ashamed to be a Canadian.

  • Cut with salvia and crystal meth? No. 99.9% of weed isn't laced with anything. They wouldn't put more expensive drugs in there for no reason.

  • the Man calls high schitzophreeenia

  • I believe this..

  • i don't think marijuana is that bad but there's an age when you do it and an age where you grow up. it's definitely not necessary for life. i realized that.

  • If you believe this video and you don't think regulation is the way to go, you're dumb.

  • This Mary Jane is probably cut with Salvia, Crystal Meth., or something worse.

The Government has made the choice to give Organized Crime, free reign just as they did during Prohibition.

These kids say that it is easier to get this stuff than it is to get alcohol. I have no doubt that this is true, however, the stuff that the kids are getting has been stomped on how many different ways?

  • You should watch the show. It was pretty fair and balanced.

BTW, Weed doesn't get 'stomped' or 'cut'. If it had been laced with anything... You'd notice. And, You need to learn how to ID good weed.

  • 0:10

wtf. what kind of person says that?

NOBODY should try a drug just to "see how it transforms you" NOBODY

    he deserved what he´s got

    treat your body with respect.

    NO EXCESSES IN LIFE

  • How can you say he deserves what he got?? Nobody deserves schizophrenia! It is a terrible disease. He was just some stupid kid who wanted to experiment.

  • More for mee

  • I have schiz, and I started smoking weed when I was in grade 9 and used it fairly frequently couple times a week not as much as some people though, and one day when I was at school I went from having slightly strange behaviour that no one could tell something was wrong about me to smoking a joint outside and completely snapped and lost touch with reality.

  • That's what the show is saying as well. Some people with schizoid tendencies appear to have negative reactions to THC. They also point out that by and far, most people have no negative reactions but folks such as yourself should not smoke pot.

  • this program isnt pro nor is it against, its just saying there are risks, and all you potheads will go no no no but believe me ive seen it first hand

  • are you kidding me all they show are the cons of using, unless they show the actually pros of using

  • what are the pros of using?

  • why dont you google it you lazy basterd?!!

  • our goverment needs to regurlate it.. just like alcohol ..

  • @umalim I agree with you on this point. I believe that most of the Weed has been cut with Salvia, these days, or things more dangerous like crystal meth.

How many people got sick and or died from bad liquor during prohibition, before regulation.

This is where we are today. The Government needs to step up to the plate or organized crime will.

It is just another case of history repeating itself.

  • Ok. A very small percent of the people who have used marijuana developed schizophrenia. Now make an episode called "The upside of high", and we will see that by legalizing and accepting pot we would be doing good to our economy, communities, people locked up in jail who shouldnt be, and your peace of mind !! (however its not for everyone). peace!

  • That's cute KristelConnors. How about you check this out. It's an actual scientific study regarding the connection of cannabis smoking and psychosis. Not just some politician in a suit telling you in a bold voice what's right and what's wrong.

    cannabis(dot)net(slash)psychosis(slash)schizoprecip(dot)html

  • The woman at 1:00 talks as if humans experience with cannabis began in the sixties. Why doesn't someone tell her how long it's been used outside of the western world. Also does everyone forget about the refining and concentration of thc in to hashish when they're claiming unheard of thc levels.

  • im done my studies on weed. now im studying everybody that fights their own opinions and thoughts on whether they think its right or not...i say, lets put it this way. if its chemically enhanced you are the one ruining your life, giving weed a bad name because of your stupidity. if it is naturally organically grown nothing added but water and soil, you WILL be fine. marijuana is NOT a drug, drugs are made with chemicals.

  • Where's the downside of alchohol? You couldn't fit that doc in a whole summer. By the way, in New Westminster it's easier to get any illicit drug than to obtain alchohol from the time you're fucking twelve to nineteen.

  • bullshit

  • he heard shit nigga must of bought some dank bud i need some of dat shit

  • Honestly, this is a serious matter not something to be joking about so keep your foolish comments to yourself and actually think about this rather than make fun of it. The only reason why your making fun of it is to try and make ur self feel better about smoking weed when you know its just as stupid as your comment.

  • No, it's because we do not support bad science and false statements. That's why.

  • @Thorne008 there ARE small chances of a teen who smokes pot to become 'psycotic' but thoose chances are VERY slim and too say that smoking is for weekilings well that is true to a certain extent, it is medicine for the sick for many situations and health problems but for someone to put that out there and say such a rude thing about pot smokers is pathetic especially the sick ones.

  • Ignorance is for weaklings who can't fathom a world at odds with their own perception.

  • lol right.. grow up

  • this is a load of crap

  • Look at the comments here from pot smokers vs. the actual scientific evidence from doctors out there which are showing an increased risk.

I support medical marijuana, but why is it so taboo to admit that the doctors and researchers might have a point?

  • I'll take this "scientific evidence" seriously when I read it in a peer-reviewed journal. If it is not in one, then it is not science.

  • haha im glad to see (judging by rating and comments) that people aren't falling for all this B.S. Blaming cannabis for every mental problem is sooooo 20th century... It's like reefer madness vol. II xD

  • Not sure what the CBC is trying to prove here, it's been known for awhile that pre-existing conditions often come more into light under such substances.

Of the things pot can be good for, schizophrenia is not one. This documentary seems suited to try to bash the medicinal concept that has finally been coming back to light, and unfortunately it will prevail because the people promoting it won't do the research.

  • What a bunch of whiners who can't handle their voices. Leave MJ Alone!!!

  • People with schizophrenia tend to smoke significantly more tobacco than the general population. Much stronger correlation than with other drug use.

Three-quarters of persons with schizophrenia develop the disease between 16 and 25 years of age even with no drug use. But this is also

the age they might experiment with drugs.

    "Correlation does not imply causation"

Schizophrenia definitely has a very significant genetic component.

  • Do I smoke because I'm crazy? Or am I crazy because I smoke? Hard to prove, hard to prove.

  • i often wonder the same thing. plus, there's the possibility i am not crazy at all. but that is equally hard to prove.

  • i really question the validity of this whole endeavor. sure, anyone who indulges in extreme amounts of any drug runs the risk of losing it. but it just feels like a totally exaggerated and tenous connection.

  • it seems like one would have to have a predisposition to schizophrenia in order for pot to set it off... just like one person might use LSD and develop schizophrenia and another person may use it with little or no ill effects.

  • this is a load of bull
