Why did you use Homer in your example? Homer didn't live in the time of Jesus, for one thing. Augustus Caesar lived during the time of Jesus, yet I don't think you'd be willing to replace his name for Homer, not with any little bit of historical knowledge.
The existence of Jesus is not recorded by any contemporary historians of his time. It is by and large a bunch of hearsay
