  • based on the duration I'd rather say it is not typical for a normal Iridium Flare... too long. are you sure it was not an UFO my friend?

  • Do they only flare out once? Or is it continues? If not then maybe I saw a UFO the other nite, cos I seen lots of satellites and stuff but the other nite I saw one blinking then disappear? What that mean?

  • I remember the first time I ever saw an iridium flare. I swore up and down that I had seen an UFO. After seeing it a few years later and doing more research I determined that this is what I've seen. Seriously cool though.

  • I saw this once it was orange. Most beautiful thing ever

  • What mean iridium flare? Is that a satelit or ufo?

  • @elchonega its a satelite.

  • Jesus Christ, what was the magnitude?

  • @johnsdevid i'd also like to know that

  • What camera was used to record this please?

  • do iridium flares ever flash more than once?

  • @kcksd10 yes they do. for many reasons. light from the sun hits them from below the horizon. maybe there is a cloud or mountain in the path of the light at the time. it is a coincidence, but it happens

  • cool, this does explain many sightings but obviously not the ones that fly in formation, change direction, etc. thanks for adding this one.

  • nice video

  • What magnitude was this? soooooo bright? Just saw a few tonight, one was a -4 but really bright

  • This video is great.. This night an iridium flare with magnitude -8.0 appears at the place where I live, too bad there are so many damn clouds.. Couldnt even watch the eclipse for one second :(..

  • Mandou bem, otima filmagem.

  • ok, so I didn't see a UFO

thanks for closing the matter for me with your upload

  • i've never seen one that bright!!

  • @MrCrookTube And I should add that they can be visible in the daytime too. I have seen one in the daytime and it was amazing.

  • @MrCrookTube It depends on the conditions that come together at your location. Depending on the orientation of the satellite, your location relative to the centre of the flare axis, the distance to the satellite, the direction of the sun and a few other factors, flares can vary from invisible to -9 magnitude - many times brighter than the brightest star.

  • Comment removed

  • The flare I saw In Dunoon NSW Australia last month was briefly as intense as the moon and visually increased to 1/2 the size of the moon before fading to nothing.. beautiful, and one prone to 2012 garbage would have wet themselves. Nice vid.

  • @kurthf74 - I've seen hundreds of iridium flares and your comments are ridiculous.

  • wow! that was so bright

  • AWESOME!!

The 7 dislikes are from people who belong to the ECETI cult at Trout Lake. The cult leader tells them these are "UFO's" so when they see a vid like this, and they're told it's just a satellite, it confuses and angers them so they click on "dislike." lol

This is an excellent Iridium Flare video!

  • @ufoguy1962 I went to Trout lake for a conf. a few years ago. Sorry guy, I saw craft disappear, split in two, totally reverse direction and zoom off, and change color when contacted by the ppl there! I have seen iridium flares, trust me, NOT what i saw at ECETI. I watched someone, who was with one other person, contact her star family. She asked for a sign and as the words left her mouth, there were tremendously bright, sudden flashes up on the volcano, Mt Adams. I'm a believer.

  • I contacted my star family, and they said that those flashes were naturally occurring.

  • sweeet! I saw one of these like a half hour ago XD

  • What is an Iridium Flare? :S

  • Wow, that's look very intensive, how much was magnitude?

  • is it slowed down?

  • You give a zoom?

    ( i don't speak english haha )

  • @Marco375

    yet you just did...

  • Thank you for posting this :)

  • what was the magnitude of that one?

  • I seen one of those at the integratron. it freaked all of us out. we had no idea what we were seeing.

  • What camera was used? It's very sensitive to light. Regular camcorder just won't do the trick.

  • This is the best video on youtube so far. Very good!

  • i saw one 2 days ago,..

  • If you think that was an "iridium flare", you are primed and ready to fall for the coming fake "alien" invasion/disclosure to help bring in the anti-Christ's 7 year New World Order. Many people see multiples of these at the same time even changing directions before they totally disappear.

  • @AlienshateU The mechanism providing the flare/glint are the Main Mission Antenna (MMA) on each of the satellites. These antennas (of which there are three- 120 degrees apart, 188 cm wide x 86 cm long x 4 cm thick each) are highly reflective aluminum flat plates (treated with silver-coated Teflon for thermal control) that are angled 40 degrees away from the axis of the body of the satellite.

  • Just a question: what was the setup?

  • eu consegui ver um do meu quarto.

  • I just got video of a -7 at 17:55 over State College PA

  • Et´s?

    kkkk

    Fun!

  • Saw one a couple of hours ago used this to explain to mate what we saw. Saw ours at 21:31.20 Hours 21st Jan, 2010 Over Campbeltown, Adelaide, South Australia. -8 Magnitude, Pretty amazing. Iridium 40

  • Just seen one, 5:51P.M. 18 Jan 10 Lafayette, Louisiana.

  • tomorrow one of -7.3 mag, men that's going to be amazing, saw my first one today

  • Holy smokes awesome video!

  • woah! i never knew how bright those were. why does this happen?

  • I only just found out the other day. It's when sunlight glints off a satellite. That's what I read in an Astronomy mag anyway!

  • Iridium satellites have large mirror-like solar panels on them. When they line up just right with the sun, they 'flare'...

  • I just saw a flare of -8 too!

  • Nice! The satellite itself seemed a little 'exaggerated' in brightness before and after the flare. Is this because of the zoom?

  • This thing i have saw a lot of times when a lived in the northeast of Brazil

It´s really amazing, In brazil they appear most of the time at 7:00 to 10:00 pm, Try to see too in your own countries. They sometimes appears from thin air and chage the direction and speed, it´s sure a OVNI

Thanks for the video and sorry my english

  • damn that's bright. What was the magnitude?

  • I beleive the flare reached mag -8, that's why I decided to get it on video.

    Kevin

  • That's so cool. I'm inspired. There one tonight at my location just after sunset almost straight up. Time to charge the video camera!

  • The video was taken using a low light video camera, which was mounted on a telescope, and the satellite was manually tracked across the sky. I know that, because it's my video

    Kevin Fetter

  • Aren't you mad your video was stolen? I think you can report this if you want to.

  • Awesome!

  • I must agree 'perfect'. I have just started taking an interest in these, whilst I 'think' I have seen something moving slowly across the sky (satelites??) I haven't yet seen a flare. I get my data from Heavens Above. Do you know is a 30 degree angle really low in the sky? Should I be focusing more towards the horizon 'cos I'm missing something! This is England.

  • Saw my first one last night while sitting by the fire. Glanced upwards at the sky and saw it getting brighter and at that time a shooting star crossed its path. What luck!

  • that flare was incredibly slow... the one i saw the other day was a lot faster.

  • can you tell us about your camera and/or recording set-up, this is very good.

  • Oh bra-vo!

  • How beautiful !!!

  • awesome. i saw my first here in CALi. the other night. it was something unexpected, and i was like " what is that?" until i looked it up, and discovered it was Iridium 31. nice. has anybody seen the Iss toolbag ?

  • was it a satellite?

  • yes it was

  • yep, it is the light reflecting off of the antennas or solar panels of the satellite.

  • i think it's antennas cause solar panels should absorb light not reflecting it.

  • what mag was that?

  • WOW THIS ONE WAS GREAT!!!

  • Wow!What an amazing video!I was just watchin ISS fly over yesterday @ -2.3 mag and it was magnificent!I can imagine how awesome it is to see a flare like this fly over at like -7 or -8 mag :D

  • It looks amazing!!!

  • Can you help me? My science teacher recomended a site called HeavensAbove, and asked us to check it out. It's meant to tell you when to see this flash thing go across the sky. I don't however, know if this is an Iridium Flare. Anyway - what i was soposed to see, had something to do with light from the sun shining off this mirror satelight thingy. Can you tell what it is? Schools out so i cant ask my teacher.

    Thanx.

  • Solar panel

  • its the antenna. solar panels are designed to absorb as much light as possible in order to be effiecient, not reflect it.

the iridum satellites have three wide looking antennas (compared to what we're used to) which have the ability to act as almost a perfect reflector when exposed to solar radiation at the right angle, hence the 'flare'.

  • Those fuckers get bright. But what about one that isn't moving? It just gets really bright. I saw one that didn't move...

  • They all move otherwise they would simply fall to the earth. It might appear to be stationary if it is near the horizon

  • That was amazing! I'm trying to see it.

ps: I'm thinking, how many people saw Iridium Flares or such and tought: "OMG!! ALIENS! I SAW UFO!! I SAW A SHIMMERING BALL OF ENERGY IN THE SKY!!"

  • What star or planet or whatever that appears on the bottom right of the screen at 0:28 ? Great clip you have, here.

  • That's one heck on an "in service" light. :)

Maybe this was answered before, but was this recording purely a stroke of luck? Or was a satellite tracking tool used to anticipate the local magnitude of the flare?

  • Of course it was predicted, probably on Heavens-above! You'll hardly catch one like this if dont predict it!

  • I guess that makes sense. Plus, if it were a surprise, this might be called "Alien horrors from beyond the moon" instead of "Iridium Flare."

  • Ive only seen a few do this. But if they're def not powered satalites, ill spend some time trying to catch one. Weather is a bit misrable in Leeds at the moment, but when it clears up,i have a go camera/tripod to play with.

  • ive seen a few magnitude -8 flares. i printed out a sheet from heavens above. com and there are a few -4 flares going over my area soon, but its been dense cloud for the past few days!

  • What was the magnitude of this thing?

  • Ive seen alot of satalites,i used to lay on the park bench early hours and watch them. i focus on a set of stars at the same time and watch for movement. After a few mins,a star got really bright and started moving, it seemed to keep changing speed, then it changed direction, then it stopped and changed direction again. Do satalites do this also?? someone please let me know. I can film these easily. I just dont want to waste countless hours,if they're just powered satalites.

  • satellites cant change direction or speed, they follow a line path on the sky and they dont flash like the stars, they are just a white dot

    use this webpage: heavens-above

  • Thats what in thought. But what about spy satalites?? Dont some have power to change direction? I thought the ones i spotted started to light up and move and change direction/speed. I just put it down to some kind of powered satalite. Spy satalites must be powered??

  • well... any orbiting satellite (not geostationary) can cover all the world, like the ISS

satellites can only make litle corrections

  • sme satellites do change direction, but you wont be able to tel unless you are physically measuring the change in plac eit is in the sky. some people do that im sure. but not me. i just like to look at them and get a picture if i can! i got my first pic of a full Iridium flare tonight!!! YAAAYYY!!!

  • satalites what we can see is light reflected on there surfaces and we can see they travel in a straight line they do change directions but the human eye cannot detect this (they have boosters on the sides so they can make direction changes to align up). as to stopping and changing direction satalites can orbit the earth in about 90 mins so you can imagine the speed they travelling, what you might of seen is a helicopter high up or a ufo.......

  • That has to be the stupidest, most ignorant comment I have ever read. You have NO idea what you are talking about. You should do yourself and us a favor and please stop using the computer, throw your car keys out the window so you don't kill any innocent people, and most certainly stop pretending to have even a remote clue about orbit mechanics, or even common sense for that matter. I don't comment on other people's inputs on here, but this just begs for someone to call your dumb ass out.

  • Oh my freaking God, and you claim to be 35 years old? This is the most ignorant post I have ever seen on YouTube. You have no idea what you are talking about, and even those without a technical backgound can see this. Are you on LSD? Please turn the computer off and put your protective helmet back on -- thanks.

  • try looking at one star for many minutes then they all move, lol!

  • Yeah lol. I just focus on a section of the sky and just stare for some time. I really want to catch some now on camera. I always assumed that it was some spy satalite. Theunusual one i spotted was just lit like a star and gradually got brighter and brighter without moving. It then started to move and it looked like it had stopped exactly next to another star,it then changed position and moved in another direction,it then changed to another unusual direction while still travveling.

  • Orbiting Satellites do not make radical changes in direction, it would require too much energy to do so. HOWEVER, when viewed from a point on earth, they could appear to change direction, If they follow an orbit which has a high inclination, such as the Tundra or Molniya orbit. In those cases the satellite will trace a seemingly impossible path in the sky. Now, whether one could actually detect the strangeness of such an orbit over a short period of time with the naked eye is another story.

  • Can you help me? My science teacher recomended a site called HeavensAbove, and asked us to check it out. It's meant to tell you when to see this flash thing go across the sky. But i don't know what i was suposed to look for tonight. Anyway - what i was soposed to see, had something to do with light from the sun shining off this mirror satelight thingy. Is that an iridium flare or something else, and if so what? You seemed to know what you were on about so i thought i'd ask.

    Thanks.

  • what is a iridium flare??

  • use google

  • UFO

  • Bla bla bla

  • Que pasa te quedaste sin palabras?

  • Gr8 vid :D!!!

  • A lot of these have been mistaken for UFOs, they should really research this stuff.

  • PERFECT !

  • This is not an Iridium Flare !!! - My Guess is someone zooming in on the ISS orbit.

  • r u serious? i've seen the space station a tomn of times and the same goes for Iridiums. thats not what it is. it is an iridium flare. I mean some on, if they were zooming then you wouldnt be able to see the stars in the background stay in the same plane

  • 100% certain - This is NOT an iridium Flare - Iridium flares fade in & out . Check out heavens above site to get the timings of a real iridium flare near you - then you can tell me I was right !!! Ive been watchin em for years. They are cool

  • yes i know the website i use it!!! as a matter of fact i jsut saw an Iridium at around 5:20(eastern) and you can see the satellite after it is done flaring if u arent "Blinded by the Light" as Manfred Man would say. a camera wouldnt be effected like the human eye. and if u missed the main part of the flare but caught the tail end(like i did tonight) you could still see the satellite. i saw it w/ my own eyes.

  • Oh Dear!!!

  • i have seen many iridium flares just like this, and yeah i use heavens above. you dont know what you are talking about.

  • fajna flara

  • These are cool, I see them all the time.. the brightness catches my eye while I am stargazing and I look over to see them fading away. I never knew what caused it until today.

  • hhhmmmm....It's extremely rare to see one on accident. It's likely that what you saw were other satellite flares and not Iridium flares which are known for their extreme brightness.

  • Cool, I'm going to try to see one tonight. The magnitude is supposed to be -7, should be fun.

  • -7! Holy crap, that's going to be something. Best I've seen was the ISS on -2, and that was pretty bright. -7 should be breath taking. Hope it was good.

  • Very Good!!!

  • They're coming ... .

  • Hoje tentei ver um Iridium Flare nessa exata magnitude (-8) mas não ví nada.

    Alguém pode me ajudar?

PS:Fiz a previsão no site Heavens-Above com a coordenada exata do quintal da minha casa.

  • cara as vezes a placa polida do satelite nao tava apontada pro sol

  • why wood u guys give me 5 thumbs down if im supporting america, and our troops, u guys should re read my message cus ther is nothing rong with it

  • thank you for the support, but death is generally frowned upon.

  • We're not against the soldiers, we're against the war. Peace brother. :)

  • i nvr said we wer against the soldiers, now did i?

  • The war wasn't meant to be won in the first place.

  • Thats sad...we are entering the 6th year of war in iraq and there are still people around who belive this could be won with technology.

Never mind, you are invited to blow up every iraqi killer sattelite you can find.

  • um dude, the least expected iraqi civilians are suicide bombers, wen the war ends, um.. dee da dee there will still be terrorist out there in iraq, so just finish them off!

  • The war isn't meant to be won in the first place.

  • Wow. very nice. I've seen a small Iridium flare on accident once (which is very rare), but I've never deliberately seen one. I'm going to try to catch a magnitude -8 flare in my area tomorrow and if I can get a good video of it, I'll post it here.

  • stupendous!!!

  • impresionante!!! yo solo e podido ver hasta -5.. es -8 ese?

  • How many Mags? -8?

I saw -8.0 iridium flare, it was fantastic!

  • I love Iridium.

  • i love iridum flares! they`re so fantastic!

  • legal!!!

  • wow, thats a flash :) i'll try to catch one right now with a help of Orbitron.

  • Beautiful!

  • "OMG! This explains what I saw when i was young, back in the early 80's. I saw something in the sky that I thought was a star but would flare up and down just like that but it didn't move across the sky like that one."

there were no iridium satellites in the 80's, iridium satellites are connecting mobilephone-data through out the planet earth

  • You are correct.

  • ufo

  • Iridum Flare.

  • Very cool !

  • dude thats not an iridium flare... that's hagrid on sirius's motorcycle.

  • OMG! This explains what I saw when i was young, back in the early 80's. I saw something in the sky that I thought was a star but would flare up and down just like that but it didn't move across the sky like that one.

Thanks for the video and for answering a childhood question that I've kept to myself for so long! =)

  • there were no iridium satellites in the 80's, they are satellites that connect mobilephone data

  • I've never seen a flare last last longer then 20 seconds or so. What was the Mag? What did you shoot the flare with?

  • Wth?

  • So impressive...

  • Iridium flare... iridium satellite, I take it?? If so, that lasted quite a bit longer than wikipedia describes. Maybe night optics helped the image be so long in duration?

  • I went out for a predicted -8 from Heavens Above tonight, which was right on time and did peak at around -8.

With an Iridium flare which gets that bright, you can see it for quite some time both before and afterwards. I first spotted it moving about 12 seconds before maximum brightness and was able to follow it for over 20 seconds more, and this is in a housing estate with street-lights nearby. They can easily last over 40 seconds in total if viewed from a place away from street lights.

  • the secrets of the ufo's hu

  • Thanks for the video. I saw one a few weeks ago and didn't know what it was. Freaked me out.

  • if i ever saw that above me, i would shit it =\

  • i saw one of these last night!

  • Ooops... What kind of complex is this! I am impressed! What is the meaning of "I am a proffessional" (!!!?) There are two kind of peoples: The ones who made the rules and the others who just learn them, dear proffessionals! Just think that there are not proffessionals for new, just borned, technology. If all people were proffessionals our technology would be to the Stone Age...

  • wut was the mag. of the flare???

  • I'd guess somewhere of a -5 maybe??

  • What kind of equipment did you use to film this? The video is near-perfect.

  • Sometimes, Heaven's above doesn't catch the flares the Satellite tool Kit has so you need to stop thinking you can out smart me.

  • that would of been better if the quality was better.

  • ur a jackass, the quality is fine.. you see other stars in the background and hear the peacocks?? jesus christ dude you better nto have rated this a 3 or 4.. str8 up five.
