The highways will be empty. By the way Detroit is showing new life. Yes, Detroit downtown. Because it's now just about as cheap to do business there as in latin america. Alot of High Tech companys are now moving there. It will take years, and they have 22% umemployment. But there's a turn around there.

Thank you so much for the truth of how Horrible it is in downtown. I worked within one block of where that Daphneys was you filmed at 6th and Alder and that entire building is almost gone now. I was just down there at Rite Aid getting my medicines and noticed many businesses as well as MSI gone. They laid me and 189 others off and got people for $6.245 an hour in Arkansas yet they told us that call centers are dead which was a lie. No one will hire me now. I have never seen things so bad here.

Well, Aaron, people use those trains for work and shopping. What are you going to do when the recession is over. It will end, they always have. Max would be a private company if not for the auto companys who also worked hard to distroy downtowns with their malls and super highways to nowhere. You also might be traveling at a off peak time. Max uses america power! Not foreign oil.

The whole reason the highway lobby used National City Lines (today a trucking company still in business the last time I checked.) to rip up private rail lines was because when you converted from rail to bus you lost half the ridership. The plan was to sell CARS! Gas at that time was cheap untill they could DRIVE demand up. Oil WAS from america and the companys WERE american owned.

Portland wasn't that great 10 years ago when I was there and I can only imagine what it's like now. I had the bright idea of trying to move there at the end of '98 early part of '99, I lasted about 3 months and then I was outta there. Not only was there a lack of work, the people were snobbish, pothead "liberals" who didn't care much for outsiders. I shouldn't have left Dallas, not that Dallas is anything great but it sure beats Portland.

But I was young and tired of the scenery in Texas, scenery change however does not always translate into a better choice. @u2fornow the cars are more on the east side of the city the vast majority of traffic in the city core is via the MAX and streetcar lightrail systems. Not to mention biking and walking Portland is a very forward looking city most of us don't take the car unless we have to.

I drive only on rare occasions like when I have to leave the city but the vast majority of the time I walk/bike or utilize mass transit. Like you said I save a ton of money also by not purchasing gas. I will never move to any place that does not have a decent mass transit system in place. Why would I want to be stuck in gridlock and smog when I can simply hop on a train or bike

It is seeing it's fair share of the economic problems but it too will turn around just like other major cities. =) I love the MAX system in portland I take it to work/school on a daily basis I also utilize the extensive bike paths Portland has to offer. Portland has had trains for years now we have the MAX light rail and the streetcar system. We actually have the most extensive system in the United States and one of the only systems in the United States. Some 120,000+ Portlanders ride the MAX system on a daily basis.

You were on the MAX during business hours get on during lunch/morning rush hour/day rush hour/weekend/event season/concert/blazer game/summer. and your not going to be able to move.. that's how it pays for itself. You also have to realize that the amount of empty retail spaces can seem huge but when your in downtown a "lot" really isn't that much when you consider the massive amount of available space. It's not like Eugene were 10 empty buildings means something huge.

I spent most of my life in Portland. Moved out two years ago. Those are stunning pictures, it was not half that bad just two years ago.

The MAX was always packed full for the two rush hour times, but after that it was not safe to ride it. Punks and druggies had free access to riders with no why out and no live responsible person in the cars. They killed the city with PC bull pucky!
