Their English crops had failed.native people fed them through the winter and taught them how to grow food.They had already experienced European slave traders raiding their villages for a hundred years or so, and they were wary but it was their way to give freely to those who had nothing.

Rush doesn't tell the whole story. The reason there was not enough food in the beginning was because the new land was constantly flooded with new migrants, which meant to many mouths to feed. If this was not the case there would have been enough food and Socialism would have worked for the first settlers.
