Telling from the debate i see here, if goku and vegeta did put on the potara earrings with them BOTH as ssj4's, they would be ssj4 Vegito who would be stronger than ssj4 gogeta since the fusion dance (aka ssj4 gogeta) is only temporary while the potara earrings (ssj 4 vegito) would last forever. Plus in dragonball z, the old kai even said it upon himself that the potara earrings ae stronger than the fusion dance.

The beam struggles need to be at least another 5-10 seconds longer. They're all over far tto quickly which doesnt capture the feel of the anime where they go on for ages.
