@avalonkiller SSD's have lower capacitys and are more expensive. Maybe when the technology reaches its high i'll switch over but for now, hard drive's are cheaper and have more storage so i think ill stay with hard drives.
At the bottom of Preferences>Personal stuff in Chromium, there's the option "Hide system title bar and use compact borders". This may help hide the title bar.
MeeGo worked fine on my Acer Aspire One, but like all Linux distributions of you take a closer look at it, you see the problems.
The messenger was not able to use ICQ or MSN, Installing software is too tricky and the mail client also is slower than my windows mail client. Also the menu did not have interesting options.
@cumulus0007 well it still does not work here as well as the google synchronization. and in the app store are just a few apps. also playing a divx video did not work... :( i now installed thunderbird from the garage appstore but it did not show up anywhere allthough it said that it was successfully installed.
@mentalplayground I found the whole Unity setup to be choppy and annoying, just my opinion. Although, I normally don't go with any netbook-oriented distros
Everything runs really good on this OS, except for one ANNOYING bug. The blank screen when opening your netbook (after closing it). I really hope they fix it SOON!
Is this better than Moblin v2.1? I'm currently using Moblin v2.1 on my Acer Aspire One D250. Everything's good so far, except for one thing. I can't make Twitter working. :( ... I put the right username and password under 'My Web Accounts'... But I can't still see all Tweets on "myzone"...
@andrewpmast So I guess they didn't do much improvement since moblin huh? I tried moblin before but experienced some issue about wifi, so I switched to Jolicloud and have been using it since then. Just like you said it's cute, snap, and pretty, I'd like to use it too if they're ready out of box like ubuntu and its derivatives.
@Banziilloic Ubuntu is definitely the most catering when it comes to getting third-party stuff installed. I think it lends to its popularity. I like Jolicloud too. I think its current release runs on ubuntu. :)
@andrewpmast Ubuntus popularity came from nice PR trick when Mark Shuttleworth gave money so Ubuntu installation disks could be mailed around the globe for the people and by free. Thats it. Otherwise there is nothing special in Ubuntu if excluding the GNOME theme, GNOME icon set and the wallpaper and very few Canonicals own custom software like proprietary Ubuntu cloud and a global notifications panel. Now just Ubuntu fans are keeping so big noise that media talks only about Ubuntu and thats it.
@TheFri13 Good point. I was SO close to keeping MeeGo but discovered no easy way to install popular 3rd party video, wireless (like Broadcom) and sound drivers for industry standards like mp3, wav, mpg, avi, wmv.
Back in 1998, I used to hack Red Hat for hours to get all that working. So, you'd think by 2010, ANY Linux distro which stands a chance against Ubuntu needs to look at its ends user's needs. Write scripts to install drivers for my mom who never has problems installing windows.
@andrewpmast Well the codecs would be easy to install from mplayer own site. But it is true it is easier to click a package in package manager or just click media file and they are offered automatically. Or choose distribution what brings those preinstalled (illegal thing in most countries). Installing software system is never 100% sure thing if it is not done by OEM. So far best success has been with Mandriva to any computer. But not every distro out there is good for everyone or most people.
@andrewpmast Yes, Mandriva needed to change its name from Mandrake Linux because the Mandrake cartoon copyright owners sued Mandrake from the Tux and the hat. Now Mandriva is moving away from EU area and there is a fork coming from the Mandriva Linux called "Mageia". It is community build so it will not have the commercical ties to the design (themes, configs etc).
@TheFri13 I'll have to check it out, once it's published. I tried ChromiumOS and it's a waste of HD space. There is no sense in having a 160GB hard drive if all you can do is surf the web. Sure, you can store photos, videos, but I found no interface to accessing them.
@LbsOfTech Even that USB sticks have flash chips in them, they are about 50-100x slower than flash chips used in SSD's. Example, Kingston 16GB Stick writes 2.3MB/s and reads 4.5MB/s. Typical SSD reads 200MB/s and writes 190MB/s.
Even the 133 PATA gives 80MB/s read speed and 30-60MB/s write speed.
Hm, meego looks nice but it has a long way to go. I've tested it out the past few days on my laptop just for fun. I agree with you about the huge bars and the goofy full screen for things just like a calculator.
I like how its trying to integrate your social streams right into the OS as thats a huge part of computer use for most people myself included. They are just going to have to increase greatly the amount of services they integrate to appeal to more users.
I use facebook, skype, and google services. If there was deep integration for these it would be a more appealing OS. Having a twitter feed is great, if you use twitter but I don't.
They also need to greatly increase the number of apps in the app store. Being built on the linux kernel there are already so many applications out there that need to be packaged in a form that can be put in the garage.
So it has a lot of potential and I'm looking forward to its future.
BTW, I got this netbook with Windows 7 pre-installed. At the beginning it was veeery slow. With Intel optimized Linux OS it is about 4 times faster than with Windows 7 Starter Edition. Thank you Intel and Nokia for great work! Keep on doing good development and business! God bless you!
I'm satisfied user of Moblin Linux. Meego is the successor of Moblin and Nokia's Maemo Linux OSes. My opinion is just: it is great! It is exactly designed for netbooks with small displays. It starts very fast and it's very easy and quick to use. I have also Nokia N900, but I'm using Moblin v 2 with my Samsung NC10. Moblin and Meego are both optimized for Intel Atom processors. Thats the reason why it is so fast and responsive all the time.
@KaiVanRay The way I see it it has everything most netbook users want their netbooks for and I'm looking forward to give it a shot although it looks somewhat childish.
Please very important question... Will MeeGo support sim card 3G connectivity?? Most new netbook will feature a sim card slot for connectivity on the go, but they run Windows 7 Starter, which is quite slow on a Atom Netbook, can MeeGo connect to the internet via 3G?
Moblin desktop enviroment is actually pretty good for netbooks. I suggest installing Fedora 13 Moblin Respin instead of meego (Fedora has more software and hardware support)
Too bad it's primarily an Intel project. It supports...x86 with SSE3, Atom processors, and the ARM chip in the Nokia N900. It's also a bitch to build the system, so using the "Open Source" aspect of it doesn't do much for you if you want it on an ARM netbook, or an AMD desktop machine...or a Pentium 4 or PowerPC for that matter.
Intel, fucking with consumer freedom since the mid-1990's. Shame, too, because MeeGo looks fucking gorgeous.
We should limit multitasking as much as possible. Multitasking actually distracts a lot and reduces efficiency in our daily life. It's an illusion that multitasking increases efficiency.
@afederdk It's not some wierd hack. It's in chromes settings. Usually it's set to off by default, but for some reason this build it's not. In "Chromium Options" under "Personal Stuff" there is the option to "use or hide system title bar and borders" Your wierd hack is as simple as un-checking a box.
@matthyahuw It's entirely possible to run multiple applications side by side (multitasking). It just so happens he only had that one application running on its own in that zone.

After the initial honeymoon phase, I started to dislike it. Pretty and cute but..
1) mp3 and video codecs... unlike Ubuntu which automates most of it for you, you're forced search forums. I don't care but mainstream users will.
2) Social "networking" is limited to two apps, twitter and some other obscure app. uhm, Facebook, ever heard of it?
3) Of course, wireless didn't work for Broadcom... ubuntu automates it
Just like ChromiumOS, I WANT to like it but it makes it hard for me to like it.
