@Ianandsyd We'll never know. The stupid arse that wrote the words in that banner - which takes up about a third of the screen - didn't seem to realise that there are two girls in that clip
Steve Wright et al have to make cheap comments at the expense of others because they have nothing creative of their own to contribute. I thought this was a decent entry. I do remember thinking that maybe it was a lit dated, I agree. But I always remembered the tune, which is a good sign. It was fine.
Maybe someone should have told them it was 1978 not 1973. Everything about this was dated even in 78 from the song to the ridiculous glam rock outfits.
@tomaroony People still wore flared trousers for a few years but the influence of punk changed fashion dramatically and only in Eurovision would anyone dress like they are in this clip from 1978. For some reason, Britain became caught in a time vacuum set in the early seventies and after Abba won in 1974 always followed that model forgetting to update the music & the fashion.
@flaxonx3 You took the words right out of my mouth. But, then again, I must say that I liked the glam rock era and the music of Slade, Mud, The Sweet and T. Rex, etc. In my view, the pop/rock music of 1972, '73, '74 and '75 was considerably better than the stuff that today's generation of teenagers and young adults listen to (as a general rule, that is).
Josie Andrews was so Hot in this vid, we truly should have won Eurovision if only for the sight of Josie's legs...but the song was good to. BOGOF Steve Wright (and I don't mean buy one get one free)
why does that wanker keep putting those annoying uninteresting uniformative irritant captions up?- does he really think he's telling us something we didn't already know? - what a tosser
@sorova Everyone knows that Cheryl [Baker] subsequently became a member of Buck's Fizz, who won the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin three years later.
With regard to your rather crude comment alluding to the sexual attractiveness of the two female members of Co-Co, you speak as if you have "known" Ms Baker and Ms Andrews personally - in the biblical sense. I very much doubt whether that is the case (to be frankly honest).
we arent doing very well with eurovision now .11th is a pretty good place now for being in the eurovis..i remember this one,,i bought the ep,,memories..great tune,,didnt realize our cheryl was 57 this yr,,she dosent look at it at all..memories it brings so many back...
CoCo had already been at the UK final of 1976 with the David Hayes / Phil Dennys song "Wake up" and featured Cheryl Baker who had previously been in the group Bressington Spire which was a 2 boy/ 2 girl group and included Terry Bradford who would later manage the groups. Cheryl went on to be part of Mother's Pride who supported Freddie Starr in Blackpool in the late 70's. The drummer "Charlie" who was added for the Paris ESC was Charlie Brennan.
One of the guys in that group (I don't know his name) seemed to be doing a creditable impersonation of Steve Priest of The Sweet! Not that Mr Priest looked like that in 1978, of course - the 'glam rock' era (with all its flamboyance and androgyny) was over by then. But perhaps the guy in Co-Co didn't realise that!
As we all know, one of the blonde lovelies who appeared in that archive footage [from '78] was Cheryl Baker - who went on to achieve fame a few years later, as a member of Buck's Fizz, who won the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin, in May 1981.
I do not know the name of the other blonde lovely who appeared in the archive footage of Co-Co performing "The Bad Old Days" ...... but I must say that she was a STUNNINGLY attractive 'bird', back in '78.
I enjoyed watching that footage. "The Bad Old Days" by Co-Co - which was the UK's entry in the 1978 Eurovision Song Contest - may not have been one of the best songs ever to come out of the ESC, but it was not bad either. Certainly it deserved to finish higher - much higher - than 11th place in the contest.
What is more, the group were very easy on the eye. The two blonde birds in the group were seriously tasty - to use a colloquial term that was fashionable in the '70's.
Can anyone remove Steve Wright's vocal chords? I like this, remember it well. Was one of our better Eurovision entries too. The words had real meaning. So please Steve-just shut up!
Yeah ....... shut it, Wrighty! If you can't bring yourself to say anything nice about the artists/groups whose music you introduce on 'TOTP2', then please say nothing at all.
Steve Wright has been one of the top music radio presenters /'DJ's in the land for well over 30 years now, and he is very talented. However, some of his on-air remarks [both on radio and on television] are a bit insensitive, a bit cutting; Steve's remark about the Eurovision band Co-Co was a case in point.
Good question! Josie was a STUNNINGLY attractive 'bird' back in those days [1978]; that much became crystal clear to me when watched this vintage footage of 'Co-Co' (on You Tube) for the first time, a few weeks back.
I am tempted to also mention that, from my perspective as a red-blooded, heterosexual man, she dressed in a manner which was somewhat sexually provocative ...... but, of course, in these days of 'political correctness' one is not allowed to say things like that !
@skindrew Er ...... yes! You have got a point there. The term "red-blooded" is not a particularly good synonym for "heterosexual" (when one stops to think about it). As you pointed out [in your comment], ALL members of the human race are, in fact, red-blooded - regardless of whether they are heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual or asexual!
@cozybest cheryly deserves what shes achieved,,a bubly personality, warm, affectionate and a good presenter..it does not always goo by stunning good looks...have you been out with some one whos stunning yet hasny got anything upstairs in the brain dept,,i certainly have..lol
@chris276100 Well, Chris, The Eurovision Song Contest is not renowned for being a fair or objective competition. As we all know, some countries indulge in "tactical" voting (so called) ...... and this makes a mockery of any pretence that the ESC is fair.
I was thirteen years of age in May '78, when Co-Co represented G.B. in Eurovision with "The Bad Old Days". Like you, i was more than a lil disappointed when they failed to win. (I believe that they finished in 11th (!) place.) Grrrrrrrrrrrr!
@CelticNut Well, she certainly WAS gorgeous, back in 1978 (at the age of around 20 or thereabouts). I do not know whether she is STILL worthy of that epithet - in 2011. Let's face it, 33 years is a long time, and by now, the ageing process may well have robbed Ms Andrews of her stunning good looks and sexual desirability. Having said that, one has to admit that SOME women (albeit a very small minority) are still seriously s*******e in their early 50's - maybe Josie is one of them.
I'm sorry I don't mean to do this but as a kid I watched a lot of Benny Hill reruns in the late 70s and for some highly odd reason, this reminds me of those odd musical numbers from hiw show. Like I said, I apologize in advance.
why is it necessary to overdub witless quips while the music is being played. This was after all a retro music show. we watch it now because we like to remember how good those times were. We dont need some smug little twit from the back room to cheapen things for us. Kindly P off and just let the music play.We could do the opposite of course and start showing banners in front of pixie thingy and amy winealot and that crowd, how would they like it?
Now I've heard the song a few times I'm ashamed to say I like it even tho it's cheesy! Surely the line " I was tossin & turning like a ship WITHOUT a sea" should b " like a ship ON the sea" as it would toss & turn more on sea! The lead female singer looks like she's about 2 suck cock & her neck muscles give up, thats y her head keeps falling 2 1 side! The ginger bloke shouldn't grow an afro, if ya ginger ya should shave or go bald or dye ya hair & def' not wear mustard coloured trousers
Not the best of songs, they look like Glam-Rock without the Glam or the Rock! They didn't look like they beleived in themselves. I resent what the caption said about Black Lace, Mary Anne was a good song!
A real disgrace imo, late 70's to early 80's this was one of our better euro songs, Cheryl Baker wearing that ridiculous outfit & screaming as the song finished at eurovision itself probably cost us at least 6 places !
The year before we had a real corker of an entry by Lynsey de Paul, which narrowly lost, and then Co Co, for all it was a reasonable song, finished 11th. Could have been a case of the French rubbing our noses in it, as they beat us in 77 and were determined they would get us again in 78. Actually the Israelis won in 78 but the damage was done.
The white face was a clown reference, the band being CoCO, who was a clown. Clever, eh? (tho they should have been called KaKa and worn turd costumes)
Ye gods, what were they wearing? And why did one man have whiteface?
This was way back in the day when all countries realised Horrorvision was a joke, now everyone but the UK takes it sooooo seriously. We get the joke and will never win again.
Well, I think one more hate post of mine would just be silly so: well yes, it's SCHLAGER. Plain and simple. Not my cup of tea, but well, maybe other people's even. :)
