At 0:33 the guy in the pink shirt on the top of the screen almost got hit too! You wouldn't believe how dangerous the Le Mans pits could be! Never get in the way of a guy whos been driving a mean-machine for 6 hrs straight!
I'm not sure about the pitlane regulations. but maybe the cars should be banned from leaving the pit road and turning into their boxes before theyre ahead of the box behind theirs. that should prevent such accidents, press crews or pit crews, and it would be fair in terms of time spent in pits as every car does the same.
I seen some very knowledgable auto racing fans here, so I felt the need to share my thoughts with you all
@aydeeT The Audi couldn't have turned in any later without overshooting it's box. The boxes at Le Mans are very small, so small that if you have the misfortune of having a car stopped right in front of you and behind you when you're done with your stop, you can't get out.
the spotters duty is to cover the cameramans ass right? sure they heard the sirens, he saw the #8 audi coming, then he turned his head to #7 audis direction. that was the mistake.
maybe spotters should stand on the other side of the cameraman, rather than putting them at the frontline.
Cameraman is not to blame here, he has his spotter at his side, cameraman looks in the camera, his spotter looks for everything else, and should know where the cars should be.
It is quite very irritating to see that the cameraman was so "this is the only car on the track" that he was like 4 feet from the car and about 2 feet outwards, into the pit road.
I believe that the horn (which sounds at 0:09) cannot be heard, the engine's sound (from the cars passing thru the track) makes it virtually impossible to be heard.
It's the cameraman's support guy, who was paying more attention to the car and the shot, rather than pay attention to the pit-lane road, which was his job.
@WeirdHalogeno Do you have much knowledge of motorsport, and being in a pit lane? The camera man is in one of the safer areas. Also, he's keeping his distance to avoid getting in the way of team members. Did you know that the blue Michelin branded lane is actually where people walk? He wasn't exactly asking to get hit, the driver wasn't paying enough attention, that's all. Pit lanes are dangerous places though, everyone needs to be alert, all the time. Even the pit lane speed is fast enough!
@MrGlenLane Are you kidding me?!?!?! How can be the Pit-Lane road one of the most safer areas? Are you out of your Vulcan mind!?!?!
Yes, I know my shit dude, believe me, it's one of those places where you have to be a Camaleon, you have to be looking everywhere at the same time to stay safe.
Don't get me wrong, I do respect your comment, but when you drive thru the pit-lane @ 80 Km/h, it is quite claustrophobic, and you don't see a person until it is close to you.
@WeirdHalogeno Read it through again, taking into account what your previous comment was. I said he's in one of the safer areas (of the pit lane) not of the circuit! Now, I kinda know what I'm on about, I spend a large portion of my life in the pit lanes of racing circuits.
@sysrq120 there is a pitlane speed limit i think it is 80 km/h or 60 and they make sure that the drivers dosent exeed that speed. if they do in le mans they have to drive thru the pitlane once again on the next lap therefore loseing time to the other cars. i have seen it happen a couple of times i am danish excuse my english
A tragic but understandable accident. The drivers have to go fast, because they are in a race, so they shouldn't slow down because there are people in the pit lane. When a car goes into the pits there are a lot of people moving around, and he can't slow down all the time. The camera man didn't see him coming because he had a job to do also. The guy watching the camera man though. He should have been there and dragged him out of the way when the other Audi entered the pits.
what the fuck do they expect,,its a busy pit lane with camera men not paying attention..i say anyone not serving a purpose to the pit lane should be banned...
the camera man shouldn't have been standing in the way of a car entering pit lane. IMO, they shouldn't be aloud beyond the pit wall, they aren't in F! and we get perfectly acceptable footage there
@gurusson It's because you have 20+ guys all working on an F1 car, so it's already crowded beyond belief. Here there's only two/three guys working on the car at any one time.
If you'll also noticed his spotter wasn't paying attention, if anything all he does is get himself out of the way... Epic failure on his part.
@gurusson The cameramen do stand in the pit lane in F1, although they stay closer to the garages. The difference is that there are only twelve pitboxes in F1, so they can stand quite a bit further back. At Le Mans, the pit stalls are so small that a car can't pull out if there is a car stopped in the box ahead. In fact, the Audi that hits the guy was pitted two boxes ahead and still was closer than any two boxes are at most F1 tracks.
i think that they should have some rule as to where they are alowed to stand by the box diffrent than now back in the 90s they could habe 3 400 people in the pit lane a new rule needs to be inforced or have people wear padding next year
Anybody who has ever been in a pitlane during, before or after a race will agree to me, that race drivers don't care about people standing in the pitlane. they just go as fast as posssible. if there's a a man standing he will jump back. if not, it's not the driver's problem.
I didn't know yet, that it was the winning car, who catched the camera man.
Check the pitboards so you have an overview when which car comes in, check if mechanics are preparing a pitstop so you can organise your shooting of the pitstop.
@seapeddler: you enjoy watching the race on TV ? well this cameraman was professionaly filming for your entertainment
Unfortunately Audi is renown among cameramen/photographers to show NO respect for filming/photographing media. 2/2
Being a professional photographer, with 60+ 24hours races covered worldwide, I can't help to say it was a fundamental error of the cameraman and specially the guy watching over him. Before you move around a pitting car you ALWAYS check the pit before and behind the pitting car to see whether they expect a car comming in. 1/2
@iPROFITDON The military/police have hovering drones that carry special cameras.
That's all that needs to be done. Standing in pit lane is like walking down the middle of Highway 401. How many pit-lane cameraman will graduate form college this yr.?
What are the specific rules for cameramen standing in the 'right-of-way' of the cars entering the pits? There are 100 ways to get photos of pit lane stops. Why press the issue/ This may go to the United Nations.
@seapeddler LOL! Your saying they should have hovering drones out to record this race so unappreciative cats like you can watch? Ever sit and watch cars in the pit watching the wheel men drill each nut in and change each tire?
Now think carefully just how expensive those drones are and just how many the military actually has, and no police don't have fucken hovering drones lmao. Your funny.
at least everyone now knows that audi will pass the European safety standard for pedestrians safety.
Also @Emerica420 it is true, the second guy is supposed to make sure the guy doesnt get hit or interfere with the race. apparently, the second guy wasn't doing his job, and the driver was driving properly as he would in a normal pit lane entry.
the black fin on the R15+ that hit the guy i think is driven by the Newer Audi Drivers.
Since the next garage was operated by the same team he was filming he was over confident that he was in a safe position, inside the pit lane line.
For those that think motorsports can survive without cameras in the pits think again, from a sponsers perspective the cars are fast moving billboards. Sponsers need sexy pictures of their logos and of liveried pit crew in action. Spotters are not the sole solution as it puts another (failable) human in the chain.
On the video you can hear the warning horn, the still photographer hears it identifies that he needs to move and does so. The cameraman seems to lookup and thinks that he is out of the way. He assumed the car was not about to enter the pit behind him as was told there was only one Audi entering. The nod to his minder was to confirm that he was aware of a car that was about to pass behind him in pit lane, not that he identified it was another Audi about to pit.
Ive filmed in pit lane numerous times, here are the facts.
Drivers aim for their pit stop markers, there are always peolpe moving about either side of their garage, which if you or I were driving at 60kph would slow down to pass, but drivers expect pit crew to get out of the way and so they tune out this movement. Also it is possible that the still photographer obscured the cameraman from the drivers view.
This explains why the driver did not avoid the cameraman.
I find this very problematik. The Audi nr. 9 driver don't have too take that line....
And if he can't see the man or 2 man standing there, what he's problem whit he's eyes.....???? Maybe he should not drive cars......!!!!! And special not race cars.
The TV photografer is there for them, (AUDI and all the other teams) and not the other way. If no photografer(media) and no tv spectators and normal spektators = NO Le Mans.
Lol, he was actually carried to the ambulance, and they dropped him.. Poor guy haha.. He left the ER 2 hours l8r after lots of tests unharmed :O Amazing.
There was a lot of talk about how the press was getting in the way all the time. Even in the final 3 min, camera guys where running out onto the race track to get that last pic and messing up drivers lines.
Have heard that the cameraman suffered a broken shoulder. Worse still is the fact that he was told to stand there by the TV Producer!!!. Even so, common sense should have told him to ignore the direction given and stand garage side where it was safer.
To me it looks like the camera man had a spotter as it looks like they both are wearing the same jacket over there clothes, also what were they thinkin standing where they were in a active pit lane, surely common sence would been to stay on the right side of the car where its safe, not the left with cars driving at still a fairy high speed etc..... just looks like they were careless for a little while and paid the price
What on earth was the cameraman doing standing there. It just highlights his lack of experience at working in a pitlane during race conditions. Complete suicide which very nearly cost him his life and that of the mechanic who was trying to usher him out of the way just before the collision. Where was his spotter?. Looks like he didn't have one which is surprising as he was working for the BBC who are normally really strict on this type of thing. I believe he got away with a broken shoulder

The guy who was hit is not a "photographer" - he is a TV camera man. The guy next to him is not a "pit lane official" - he is the TV camera man's spotter and it was his job to keep the camera man safe
I did see the whole thing and i had to org, the ambulance, it took them 25 minutes to get the bloody car there, and by the time the help was here they where hopeless, amazing! Never seen such chaos at a crash! We from the Audi medical team did everything that was in our power! As soon as the official medical team from the racetrack where there it was headache.. They should have more skilled personel there!
I find it amazing that everybody talks about the cameraman and 'his right to be there'. True, but what people seem to forget is that being in the pitlane also comes with a few obligations and duties. It's your duty to make sure you don't get run over. It can't be the driver's task to look out for everyone. Wouldn't be much racing left in that case... Don't forget these things don't turn on a dime either. No matter what your task is in the pitlane: keep your eyes and ears open at all times...
Saw the accident from the Audi Pits. For 20 minutes only the Audi medicals helped the injured guy. As soon the Track-medicals arrived it changed like a sad slapstick. After 25 minutes they put him on an airbag, than on an Trolley. This medicals discussed and it didn`t look, that they knew what to do. After lifting the trolley it crashed on the floor from 80cm high, so the head of this poo r cameraman hits the floor. Finaly the engine of the ambulance didn`t start and had to be pushed. Poor man.
@SVMichel That is something lemans have to improve abt.. after all, race safety includes camera man... and i have to ask, where is the cameraman's spotter?
I was there in the Corvette pits watching it on TV. The photographer standing beside the cameraman told me that no one from Audi helped the guy until after the pit-stop was finished. They just ignored him. There was a French track physician in our pits so I told him that he needs to go to the Audi pits and help. The photographer took pictures of the injured guy but would not show them to me. Took 1/2 hour till he was moved to an ambulance. They were treating him in an active pit lane.
@SozzledTerror Its not their job to look out for cameraman who are in the way... but the job of the spotter of the camera man to tell the camera man to get out of the way
stupid cameraman.. "i don't care if i got hit by a car,i will film anything i want to film"..and the way he nods his head when the other guy tries to pull him out off the way off the oncoming car...stupid
fucking Driver is a dick. I don't care if the guy shouldn't be there... you have to be a genuine asshole to purposely mash into someone as clueless as that.
@gund3rt You think the driver really meant to do that? This is a race! and a very big and important one for that matter, you can't stop in the middle of the pit lane (where other cars are going by) just to wait for someone to move. You get in and get out as quickly as possible. True drivers need to be more careful so things like this don't happen (they do happen much too often) but that guy really shouldn't have been there and he paid the price.
@AnAngryPossom true. i see your point. i didn't consider that this is their job... sick one at that but still. i dunno. it could go both ways... nobody can be blamed.
@gund3rt you know the driver is still doing about 80kmh in the pit lane. you even heard the horn, heck even the photographer just infront of him moved.
There's one person to blame for this, its the camera man's spotter, the just next to the camera man that got hit, he is ment to be the one looking out for incoming car, camera man isnt a chameleon. and this is the circuit there's NO give way to pedestrians here.
I still get baffeld by the way ppl react to these things... in rally, racing/whatever theres the car and the race first... I dont get that. Sure, drivers cant do anything but look at the rest of the people! Many of them prally didnt notice it but my god, some did, and they are just standing there!!...
Cameraman is friend of mine. Broken left arm, lacerations to both legs and hips and lots of sore bits! He is on his way home to UK for possible operation to pin the broken arm.
@caullay Please tell him, we where verry sad what happend to him. We thaught all the time, while the race was going on, how hard he was hurt. We where shoked about the horribel medical assistence from officials. After that we are happy that he is still alive. Best regards to him from the Joest Mechanics
@SVMichel cool of you to post that... its sad that people enjoy others pain here on the tube... but i understand he was filming a good shot... and he happened to be the at the wrong time... but im sure he was banged up hard...
That's why in WRC journalists can be wherever they want.
WRC-New Zealand 2004:
A journalist made a hole on the stage just big enough to lay down. He sat down in the hole, waited for a car, took a picture, lay down then the car passed over him. He risk his life for good pictures. And marshals can't say anything.
That's one of the story my tutor told me during my marshal formation. I'm sure it's the same here in this video.
@nemchodesign but doesnt that endanger the drivers? they'll be like OH CRAP WTF, swerve to avoid then probably crash. And i'm pretty sure people aren't allowed to dig hole on tracks, track inspectors official would be pissed i reckon
@shajou I didn't think about this point. You are right :) I don't remember if my friend told me if it was on a straight line or not, but I remember them telling me that official saw the journalist and couldn't say anything or stop him
@leoviper definetly broken knee caps... and lower body... plowed... lol @ 0:33 the guy wearing white suit from the other team almost gets owned too... lol what about the $7,000 camera???? after close review... the pit official even trys to pull him back, but doesn't see a huge lmp car coming...
@kevinaster74 the race goes on,,,the pit crew have a job to do, their job isn't helping a cameraman who shouldn't have been in the way in the first place. once the car pulled out of the pits everyone helped him
What a bitch.

This should have been giving an punish !
I am from Denmark, and Audi fan

There was a lot of talk about how the press was getting in the way all the time. Even in the final 3 min, camera guys where running out onto the race track to get that last pic and messing up drivers lines.

Have heard that the cameraman suffered a broken shoulder. Worse still is the fact that he was told to stand there by the TV Producer!!!. Even so, common sense should have told him to ignore the direction given and stand garage side where it was safer.

anyone has some news about the cameraman?

Respond to this video... Broken upper arm in 2 places, the ball joint and the long bone.
Back at work very recentlyon light duties but unable to use his left arm properly at all.
Cameramen have to rely totally on spotters for safety as putting your eye to the viewfinder blinds your peripheral vision.
Audi need to buck up their safety procedures to include more than their own staff.
Snooper601 1 year ago 3

We audi medics wish him all the best!

Poor man.

They were treating him in an active pit lane.

fucking Driver is a dick. I don't care if the guy shouldn't be there... you have to be a genuine asshole to purposely mash into someone as clueless as that.
gund3rt 1 year ago
@gund3rt You think the driver really meant to do that? This is a race! and a very big and important one for that matter, you can't stop in the middle of the pit lane (where other cars are going by) just to wait for someone to move. You get in and get out as quickly as possible. True drivers need to be more careful so things like this don't happen (they do happen much too often) but that guy really shouldn't have been there and he paid the price.
AnAngryPossom 1 year ago 2
@AnAngryPossom true. i see your point. i didn't consider that this is their job... sick one at that but still. i dunno. it could go both ways... nobody can be blamed.
gund3rt 1 year ago
@gund3rt you know the driver is still doing about 80kmh in the pit lane. you even heard the horn, heck even the photographer just infront of him moved.
the one that was a dick is his spotter.

Journalists have insurance for that.
They are conscious of the danger.

@nemchodesign but doesnt that endanger the drivers? they'll be like OH CRAP WTF, swerve to avoid then probably crash. And i'm pretty sure people aren't allowed to dig hole on tracks, track inspectors official would be pissed i reckon
