  • This is a superb recording which isn't easily available. We can hear the distinctive driving sound that the Soul Stirrers (as they were later called) perfected after the war, along with R. H. Harris' lilting lead, in a recording from before the war. The recordings on Aladdin from 1947-48 are gems. But this 78 ranks with them. We can hope that the recordings Alan Lomax made of them in the mid 1930's will soon be available: the NY Times (1/31/12) reports that his archive will soon be online.

  • Very cool. I just had to synch this with R H Harris & The Soul Stirrers. Guess what... It's the exact same track. The playback speed is a bit different. But it's the exact same track! Why is there no mention of the "five" in any Soul Stirrers history online?
