I replayed this scene in the movie many times myself, how Achilles starts off slow jog, then speeds up throwing off the timing of the second spear then springs off the left foot up sticking the blade down into the lung & heart through the soft spot opening...perfection.
@guyfihi Have you tried it? The vibration of the sword is what causes that reverberating metallic *shing* sound. not the friction of leather on bronze ;}
@thecloakandblade@fakejohnwilkesbooth and as for his appearance...look up Wrath of Achilles on whichever web browser you prefer and you'll see that the Depiction of him in that picture is pretty close to Brad Pitts Physique
@nasengori27 Every depiction of achilles whether it be painting or statue does not show him as pretty boy Brad Pitt scrawnesque. Yes, we have found evidence as to how they fought. I don't know if you want me to do your hw for you and link you to some specific museum or book but there are those who have dedicated their lives to studying this era. I love war movies but this one was just bad. The only good things about this were the actors from Braveheart.
@thecloakandblade I disagree. On the contrary i havent seen a depiction of Achilles that was as big as a bodybuilder. I would love for you to put up a link for a specific picture of him.I think the actors did a great job. or you should put up another actor that could do a better job acting With around the build you are looking for.
@Thagros The movie is unrealistic. The reason they had to have that scrawn do unrealistic matrixesque leaps etc. was because there were no warriors that small back then and it would look ridiculous in a proper fight script.
@thecloakandblade. Excuse me? Ancient warriors were not bodybuilders. Boagrius was intimidating, but sadly he would have met the same fate against any skilled opponent.
@baobubs Ancient warriors lifted far heavier objects than modern day bodybuilders and were of far better genes with far better nutrition (no unnatural supplements or protein powder, creatine, etc.). I saw no skill in that clip, just an unrealistic matrixesque hollywood joke. I'd go as far to say that even 300 is more realistic than this film. Also "Is there no one else?" sounds like a rip from Gladiator's "are you not entertained?" a titan of a film compared to this crap.
@thecloakandblade Lifted far heavier objects than modern bodybuilders? Far better genes? Better nutrition? You're joking. They mostly did gymnastics for conditioning, and had nutrition perhaps on par with modern athletes. They weren't bigger or bulkier than modern bodybuilders, though they were arguably fitter/stronger in the ways that matter most for fighting. Brad Pitt in this movie is probably on the bulky end of what they would have considered acceptable fighting shape.
@fakejohnwilkesbooth The broadswords, shields and insanely heavy armor warriors in that era wore were far heavier than your normal squat or bench. Yes, better genes, they hadn't yet become polluted with sendentaryism and mass marketed perscription drugs. Better nutrition, yes, no processed foods or McDonalds fast food drive thru, microwaved meals etc. Gymnastics? Are you joking? Most warriors then were too huge to even sprint. They advanced in a march.
@thecloakandblade@fakejohnwilkesbooth you guys do realize that this film is based on legends in the Illiad. the film makers took specific quotes from the Epic and formed it into a movie. There was no way of telling what the warriors actually looked like. Nevertheless how they fought. The Illiad only says "Achilles fights with a Godlike demeanor." in my honest opinion they took what they had and made a good take on what this battle was like in the illiad.
@thecloakandblade You, sir, are talking out of your asshole. Back then everybody generally was alot smaller due to weaker healthcare and nutrition. Learn to check facts before you speak.
@gielos This ridiculous hollywood revisionist attitude towards history to appease the masses of feminine men that now unfortunately grace this generation is laughable. Back then people were much larger. Soldiers had to carry around far heavier armor, training was harder, and nutrition was far better (are you really saying processed McDonalds beats Mutton in terms of bodybuilding material?). They put a pretty boy in a movie that surrounded an era where none existed.
@gielos Furthermore, it appears the only scrawn in the film is the main character (his opponent is a more accurate depiction). And it makes no sense how he defeats him. He cuts him in the shoulder blade and it incapacitates him while he swings in the complete opposite direction? I'm not saying frail types didn't exist back then. They were scouts, and archers. Or they were sent to climb over the walls and gather information before true rogues. They simply were not melee warriors.
@thecloakandblade Oh, I agree, you're probably right man. I just wondered what historical evidence we're basing this assumption on. I assume that anyone who could call themselves a warrior was built as fuck back then. Then again, what do we know about their training regimes? What do their remains tell us about their skeletal structure? Wanted to know if you had any backup on that. Cheers.
@Thagros I'm not an anthropologist but I'm just stating general facts. As technology progressed we had to do less hard labor and things became easier.
@Thagros If you nose about on the net a little it is pretty easy to find reliable accounts. For instance, the skeletons of English longbowmen recovered from the Mary Rose showed extreme asymmetry caused by training starting when they were young (around 7 years) boys. These men could shoot a 120 pound bow all day. Or find some accounts of Zulu warrior training. Probably the finest conditioned soldiers ever and complete nutters.
Haha, Brad Pitt running in slow motion, then cutting a guy's neck in slow motion, and delivering some ridiculously written lines. Sorry, mate, but if you think this the 'Best War scene ever', then you might not have seen a war movie yet.
This is how duels should be fought when elite warriors fight...fast and effortless. The scene captures the greatness of Achilles as being the best soldier in the world - opponents die in seconds, not minutes.
This Is Sparta calling America.......Is there 300 Men in America willing to fight for freedom. Is there 300 Vets, 300 Marines, 300 in the Air Force, Army and Cops. Anybody at all? Or will you allow yourselves and your children to be chemically neutered in to girly men by the men with dark intentions? If you allow them to go any further through diet and injections it will psychologically and physically be impossible to resit. Then the ones who survive will be enslaved forever.
Who the hell were they fighting in this scene? The enemies remind me of Illyrians: they have the serpent icon on their shields which was a common Illyrian symbol and that big warrior had what looked like a celtic necklace around his throat (forgot its actual name) illyrians wore the same thing with their culture being melded from Celts and Greeks. Their probably a Greek city state but I'm just throwing this out there.
Yeah, definitely the best war scene ever. And the most awesome opening of a great movie. Brad Pitt spent months working out and working with Petersen and the fight directors to develop a unique style for Achilles. How would a warrior be the Greatest ever, what special edge did he have, special gift/talent?. I think Troy's the best movie of it's kind, ever. P.S it doesn't have enough CGI to look fake - like e.g. "300". This scene has a little but the Hector duel has none.
